El Topo (Reality Show) 18 certificate
Chilean-French director Alejandro Jodorowsky's radical re-imagining of the western is an extraordinary, head-spinning tale of a lone gunman's journey to defeat four foes. But that's about where any comparison to other westerns must end. Our black-clad 'hero' El Topo, accompanied by a naked boy, sets out on his quest, during the course of which there are a bewildering array of references to belief systems from around the world and across time, many strange, fetishistic goings-on - and quite a bit of spilt blood. It's likely a modern audience will be viewing the film in rather different state to the dropped-out, tuned-in American hippies for whom Jodorowsky's work became the ultimate 'midnight movie' when it was first released. But the imagery and plot are bizarre enough to make you think someone may have spiked your drink anyway.
(Premiere, Subtitles, Subtitled, In Spanish with English Subtitles, 18)

Loving Memory (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate

Scott worked with cinematographer Chris Menges on Loving Memory, and the result is a beautiful darkly atmospheric film that captures the haunting atmosphere of life on the Yorkshire Moors.
    Director: Tony Scott
Starring: David Pugh, Roy Evans, Rosamund Greenwood
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1971, 12, 3 Star)
