Inglourious Basterds (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 18 certificate
Quentin Tarantino's history-tweaking homage to the war movie sees the director back on exhilarating form. American officer Aldo Raine leads a squad of soldiers into occupied France on a Dirty-Dozen-style assassination mission to kill as many Nazis as possible and spread fear through the Third Reich. They become involved in a Jewish resistance fighter's plan to blow up the Parisian premiere of one of Goebbels' propaganda films - an event due to be attended by Hitler himself. Inglourious Basterds features the entertainingly showy performances, encyclopaedic movie references and oodles of self-conscious dialogue that you'd expect from a Tarantino film, as well as a superb turn from Christoph Waltz as a charmingly evil SS colonel. In English, and German, French and Italian with English subtitles.

Then it's straight in to the horrors of the trenches, where French and British troops are often within earshot of their German adversaries - and all are potentially just moments from death.

When US President Merkin meets with his advisors, not only does he have to contend with super-hawk General Buck Turgidson, who sees the situation as an opportunity to do something about Communism in general, but he also learns that the Soviets already have a Doomsday Machine in place, which will destroy all plant and animal life on Earth should the USSR be attacked. The only person other than General Ripper who might be able to recall the bombers is his executive officer, RAF Group Captain Lionel. But General Ripper is holding Captain Lionel hostage, and unless Captain Lionel can get a message to the outside world, no one will be able to figure out the bombers' abort code.

The Spirit of '45 (Documentary) U certificate
The week of Ken Loach movies comes to a close with this new documentary that traces the radical reshaping of British society by the Clement Attlee government. Loach tracks how, in an age marked both by austerity and post-war optimism, the Labour party of 1945 to 1951 created the welfare state, nationalised many business sectors and created a fairer society for the working classes. The archive footage is accompanied by interviews with some of the people - nurses, doctors, miners and others - who lived through this time of extraordinary hope and promise. But Loach also focuses on how, since Margaret Thatcher came to power in 1979, virtually all of Attlee's innovations have been dismantled by successive governments... A Film4 production.

And while he seems to want to resume family life, something appears to be holding him back; there are hints of dark secrets in his recent past. But he's only back long enough to be reacquainted with them for the shortest of times before most are massacred by a Comanche raiding party. Edwards, full of loathing for the Native Americans, sets out to exact revenge for the killings and rescue the kidnapped womenfolk. However, Edwards can have no idea what an epic mission he's taking on, nor the emotional turmoil it will unleash, or quite how profoundly it will affect him.

Kathryn Bigelow's multiple-Oscar-winning film is a compelling fact-based, Iraq-set bomb disposal drama, scripted by journalist Mark Boal, who drew upon his experiences while embedded with a US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in 2004. The film focuses on the complex characters that make up Bravo Company, who disable and destroy improvised explosive devices. The days are ticking down to the end of the bomb squad's tour, but the team are in harm's way around the clock. And it doesn't help that one of the team is addicted to risk-taking and pays scant attention to standard procedure, putting other lives in danger, as well as his own. The Hurt Locker provides a tense glimpse into the lives of these extraordinary men, and also probes the various psychologies of people whose job could kill them at any moment, as well as - briefly - exploring how they cope once away from their adrenaline-soaked vocation.
