Her curiosity deepens as she's placed in a completely dark room and instructed to act as the intermediary between her employers and whoever else is in the room. As soon as the assignment begins it's apparent that she's now facilitating a harsh interrogation rather than an interview. And that's just the first of the shocking challenges to her world view.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Documentary) U certificate
Werner Herzog's award-winning documentary about the Chauvet Cave. Situated among the beautiful gorges of the south of France, the cave is famous for its extraordinary prehistoric paintings. In a way, the film is a documentary about documentary, as, in addition to revealing the splendour of the Paleolithic artwork that was discovered within the cave system in 1994, it also probes why mankind has had, and acted upon, a seemingly innate urge to record everyday life for at least the past 32,000 years. In English, and German and French with English subtitles.

Gil Kenan's fantasy adventure, adapted from Jeanne DuPrau's children's book, sees two adolescents try to rescue their underground city from an impending power failure that will plunge their world into permanent darkness. The City of Ember was built 200 years before as a subterranean refuge for humanity from some unspecified threat. But now the generator that lights the city is breaking down, and the city is starting to fall apart. Youngsters Lina and Doon are unconvinced by the assurances of the smug, incompetent mayor. When Lina finds some long-lost information from the city's builders, she and Doon decide to stave off the beckoning darkness. But can they manage it before the lights go out for the last time? Shot entirely in Spain, with a Spanish crew, Treasure Island began its life as a 'two for one' deal Welles struck in order to gain access to the finances he needed for another of his projects, Chimes at Midnight. With just one of their craft's payload of sentient bombs left, it's nearing time to head home. But then one of the bored, put-upon crew decides to go and feed the pet alien they picked up along the way - and inadvertently sets them all on a potentially disastrous course. The special effects may be laughably unsophisticated by present standards and the film is definitely of its time, but the narrative is quirkily gripping throughout.
    Director: John Carpenter
Starring: Brian Narelle, Cal Kuniholm, Dre Pahich, Dan O'Bannon
    (Subtitles, 1974, PG, 3 Star)
