Howl's Moving Castle (Film) Film icon 4 star rating U certificate
Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-nominated follow-up to the acclaimed Spirited Away is a beguiling fantasy about love, transformation and self-acceptance. In a village in a war-torn land, a shy teenager called Sophie works in a hat shop and lives in the shadow of her glamorous sister Lettie, until she encounters the infamous wizard Howl. The meeting incites the jealousy of the Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie into a wizened old lady. Sophie's subsequent quest to lift the curse brings her firmly into Howl's world. Miyazaki paints her journey with characteristic vigour and ingenuity, gleefully exploiting a steampunk aesthetic which has its greatest iteration in the castle of the title: a bloated Gothic mansion that heaves itself along on four spindly legs to an accompaniment of groans and wheezes. This screening is of the Japanese language print, with English subtitles.
    Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Starring: Chieko Baisho, Takuya Kimura, Akihiro Miwa, Tatsuya Gashuin, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mitsunori Isaki
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2004, U, 4 Star)

    15:05

The Belles of St. Trinian's (Film) Film icon 3 star rating U certificate
The first and arguably best of the St Trinians comedies, based on the drawings of the late Ronald Searle, with a wonderful cast, wicked sense of humour and knowing demolition of the image of the British public schoolgirl. Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell and George Cole join in the fun, which includes gambling, horse kidnapping and the riotous girls concocting gin in chemistry lessons.
    Director: Frank Launder
Starring: Alastair Sim, Joyce Grenfell, George Cole, Hermione Baddeley, Betty Ann Davies, Renee Houston
(Black and White, Subtitles, 1954, U, 3 Star)

    16:55

Crocodile Dundee (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
'That's not a knife. This is a knife', is among cinema's best-known quotes, as the eponymous Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee routs a New York mugger in Peter Faiman's Oscar-nominated comedy. Hogan, an Australian national institution, broke into the big time with this film, playing an outback crocodile-hunter who attracts the attention of American journalist Sue Charlton. After she shares his life and dangers in the bush, she invites him to New York, an environment that's alien to Dundee but one he adapts to with charm and humour, as he and Charlton slowly fall in love. Edited for language and violence.
    Director: Peter Faiman
Starring: Paul Hogan, Linda Kozlowski, John Meillon, David Gulpilil, Ritchie Singer, Maggie Blinco
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1986, PG, 4 Star)

    18:45

Runaway Bride (Film) Film icon 3 star rating PG certificate
Garry Marshall's romcom stars Julia Roberts as Maggie Carpenter, who has reportedly left seven, maybe eight, grooms at the altar. USA Today journalist Ike Graham uses her as an example for a female-bashing piece, only for Carpenter to angrily reply she only jilted three men, one of only 15 inaccuracies in his piece. Stung by the rebuke, Graham travels to her small home town to get the story directly from her. But when the pair meet, it's soon clear that wedding bells might ring again - and for a final time.
    Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Joan Cusack, Hector Elizondo, Rita Wilson, Paul Dooley
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1998, PG, 3 Star)

Knowing (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Nicolas Cage stars in Australian director Alex Proyas's science fiction thriller about the discovery of a series of deadly prophecies. Back in 1959, a Boston school buried a time capsule containing the pupils' imaginings of what life would be like in the future; most contributions were in the form of pictures, but one was very different. Now, 50 years later, the experiment has been dug up, and the predictions distributed among the school's current students; the oddity - a long list of numbers that baffles everyone - is given to Caleb Koestler, who takes it home. When Chandler's scientist dad, John, takes a look at it he realises that the list details a series of lethal events, all but three of which have already happened. Convinced he's right, John sets out to both prove his theory and stop the impending disasters. But little does he know the danger he, his family and everyone around him are in.
    Director: Alex Proyas
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Chandler Canterbury, Rose Byrne, Lara Robinson, D.G. Maloney, Nadia Townsend
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2009, 15, 3 Star)

    23:20

Evil Dead II (Film) Film icon 5 star rating 18 certificate
Not so much a sequel as a reprise of the original, Evil Dead II sees Ash, the survivor from the Tennessee wood cabin in The Evil Dead, inadvertently unleashing the spirits of the dead in a remote wood cabin in Michigan after reciting 'Necronomekon - The Book Of The Dead'. And that's when the plot sickens: an army of decomposing dead people and evil spirits kill Ash's girlfriend and then spend the rest of the night trying to ensure that Ash and a group of new arrivals to the cabin - including Anne, who may have the solution to the problem - will all be dead by dawn.
    Director: Sam Raimi
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Kassie DePaiva, Ted Raimi, Denise Bixler
    (Subtitles, 1987, 18, 5 Star)

    01:00

Fish Story (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Yoshihiro Nakamura's distinctly odd sci-fi comedy follows the trajectory of a song recorded by a Japanese punk band. Waxed in 1975, Fish Story not only got the musical jump on Britain and America's claims to have invented punk, but could also hold the key to saving Earth. Starring Atsushi Ito, Mirai Moriyama and Kengo Kora.
    Director: Yoshihiro Nakamura
Starring: Vincent Giry, Gaku Hamada, Atsushi It, Kengo Kra, Mirai Moriyama, Yoshihiro Nagata
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Subtitled, In Japanese with English Subtitles, 2009, 15, 4 Star)

Silent Running (Film) Film icon 3 star rating PG certificate

Lowell must take drastic action when he's ordered to destroy his precious cargo and his robot crewmates are ready to comply. It's unsurprising that the film is visually impressive, given that it was the directorial debut of special effects maestro Douglas Trumbull, but Silent Running's greatest strength is perhaps its poignant pathos, and its environmental message is as relevant now as it was when the film was released.
    Director: Douglas Trumbull
Starring: Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts, Ron Rifkin, Jesse Vint, Steve Brown, Mark Persons
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1971, PG, 3 Star)

Tyrone Power stars as the masked hero of this swashbuckling action-adventure that's set in 19th-century California. Don Diego Vega is the son of a wealthy rancher. Having recently arrived back on the family estate from being educated in Spain, Vega seems every bit the fashion-obsessed aristocrat. However, his time away has given him a social conscience - and he is secretly horrified to discover how the poor are being treated on his home turf. So he sets out to right the wrongs he sees about him, disguised in his trademark hat, cape and mask - and relying upon his telltale swordsmanship to deliver justice. This witty, tongue-in-cheek romp is widely regarded as the best telling of the story; it features Basil Rathbone as Zorro's evil adversary and Linda Darnell as the love interest.

It turns out that while his mum Sally is human, his father is the Greek god of the sea and earthquakes, Poseidon; which makes our hero a demigod. At first it's all a bit much to take in, as he learns the modern world is teeming with deities and their offspring. And things take a turn for the worse when Zeus suspects Percy of theft after the lightning bolt that confers supreme, terrifying power goes missing. Henry King's film deserves to rank alongside them, with Gregory Peck as King David and Susan Hayward as the beautiful Bathsheba, for whose adulterous love David risks his throne, country and even the wrath of God. Told in occasional flashback, the film sees him conquer Goliath and lead his armies to victory before the prophet Nathan brings the word of Jehovah and His judgement, when David atones for his sins.

Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen star in this dark psychological thriller from director Joel Schumacher. Walter Sparrow is leading a contented life until his wife Agatha innocently gives him a battered old paperback as a gift. As he reads, Sparrow is astonished by the parallels between his life and that of the novel's protagonist, Fingerling. But as the plot progresses it grows darker, featuring themes of transgressive sex, suicide and murder. It also hinges around Fingerling's obsession with the number 23 - a prime number that seems to pop up everywhere in the universe once you start to notice it. It's not long before 23 takes a similar hold on Sparrow. And, when he begins unjustly to view Agatha in the same distrustful light that Fingerling views his own spouse Fabrizia, it seems as if Sparrow has locked on to the same tragic trajectory as the story's lead character. Or can he find a way to wrench himself from the novel's grip? Film4 premiere.

Tales From the Golden Age: Legend of the Party Activist (Arts) 12 certificate
Cristian Mungiu's collection of five short comedies, directed by himself, Razvan Marculescu, Constantin Popescu and Ioana Uricaru, takes a bitingly satirical look at life in Romania during the final years of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's regime. The individual episodes give an idea of how surreal and absurd the lot of the ordinary Romanian could be made by the machinations of their nation's brand of communism. The stories take the form of blackly comical folk tales: The Legend of the Official Visit tells how villagers could be forced to jump through hoops to satisfy official representatives on even the most fleeting of stops.

David and Bathsheba (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
In the 50s, Hollywood developed a penchant for biblical tales, including King of Kings, The Ten Commandments and Quo Vadis.

Silent Running (Film) Film icon 3 star rating PG certificate
Bruce Dern stars in this ecological sci-fi drama as Freeman Lowell, the lone human crew member on the Valley Forge, a vast spacecraft carrying the remnants of post-apocalypse Earth's plant life.

Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson and Andr? Benjamin star in Kent Alterman's 70s-set, big-haired sports comedy. Jackie Moon is a musician whose sole chart success enables him to fulfil a long-held dream: buying and running a professional basketball team. It's 1976 and Moon's team, the Tropics, plays in the American Basketball Association league, which is about to be merged with the National Basketball Association. But only four teams from the ABA will survive the merger, and Moon is determined not to be left owning a defunct team. And, in addition to garnering the necessary points, the merger requires the successful teams to also attract at least 2000 fans to each home game - provoking Moon to stage a series of desperate game day publicity stunts, which range from the astute to the gloriously insane. Can Moon, his back-from-retirement signing Monix and the self-centred but promising youngster Clarence ensure the Tropics' survival?

Hustle and Flow (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Oscar-nominee Terrence Howard stars in Craig Brewer's drama as Djay, a small-time pimp trying to make a living in Memphis and who aspires to be a rapper. When he hears a successful hip hop artist is coming to town, he's inspired to lay down a demo with the help of his friend Key and sound engineer Shelby. Howard's outstanding performance and Brewer's script combine to deliver a compelling film, which refuses to gloss over Djay's unsavoury aspects, presenting him as a conflicted, complex character.
    Director: Craig Brewer
Starring: Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning, Taraji P. Henson, DJ Qualls, Ludacris
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2005, 15, 3 Star)
