Date Night (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Tina Fey and Steve Carell star in Shawn Levy's chase comedy. Phil and Claire Foster feel their marriage has gone a bit stale and decide to pep it up by going out on a date, just like they used to do, before the kids and the mortgage and rest of life's inevitable distractions got in the way. In principal it's a good idea, but their first mistake is to try to get into one of Manhattan's swankiest restaurants without a reservation. Their second is far more serious: they bluff their way in, pretending to be a couple who have failed to show up for their table. Unfortunately for the Fosters, the absent diners have serious gangland connections. Even more unfortunately, the people whose identities they've adopted are due to be silenced forever by hitmen. Cue a tightly plotted, gag-packed, headlong flight for survival, which has distinct echoes of 40s screwball classics. And keep an eye out for memorable cameos from Mark Wahlberg and James Franco.

Starring: Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg, Taraji P. Henson, Jimmi Simpson, Common

Machete (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 18 certificate
Danny Trejo takes the lead in this enthusiastically gory and violent action-revenge movie from director Robert Rodriguez. The film began its life as a spoof trailer in Rodriguez's Grindhouse collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, and has here been worked up into a full-blown homage to B-movie era exploitation movies. The plot centres on a Mexican man called Cortez - who's nicknamed Machete for his predilection for long, sharp blades - and his quest to avenge the murder of his wife and child, which in turn leads him into a contract to kill a racist American senator.
    Director: Ethan Maniquis, Robert Rodriguez
Starring: Danny Trejo, Robert de Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2010, 18, 4 Star)

Tabu (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Teresa Madruga, Laura Soveral and Ana Moreira star in this drama from director Miguel Gomes, which explores hidden lives, love and memory. Shot in black and white throughout, the film is divided into three parts, opening with an enigmatic prologue set in yesteryear Africa, which features a white hunter and a crocodile. Shifting to modern-day Lisbon, the first chapter centres on the relationship between the elderly, grouchy and aloof Aurora and her devout, middle-aged neighbour Pilar. The consequences of the older woman's paranoia and addiction to gambling lead Pilar to discover more about Aurora's past, which unfolds in part two. This takes the form of a quasi-silent movie, set in the then Portuguese colony of Mozambique of the early 1970s, and is narrated by one of the key figures in Aurora's life. Also starring Henrique Espirito Santo and Carlo Cotta. Gomes's work picked up several awards at European festivals, including the FIPRESCI Prize in Berlin. Film4 premiere.

Originating as one of the spoof trailers in the Canadian release of the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse project, Jason Eisener's exuberantly blood-drenched directorial debut gives Bladerunner star Rutger Hauer a gun and a motive and lets him murderously loose on a town full of bad men. As the unnamed vagrant of the film's title meanders his way across the country, he wanders in to the encouragingly named Hope Town. Sadly, this turns out to be a misnomer, the place being essentially the fiefdom of a viciously criminal family, corrupt officials and other such malefactors. And, as he witnesses injustice pile upon felonious injustice, he snaps, takes up that twelve-bore and, with the gleeful insanity of the righteous vigilante, dishes out inventively gore-splattered retribution on the various factions who have been making the residents' lives a living hell.

Rope! (Film) Film icon 3 star rating PG certificate
Alfred Hitchcock shot and edited this groundbreaking thriller in a no-cut continuous narrative to emulate the hit stage play upon which it is based. John Dall and Farley Granger play Brandon Shaw and Philip Morgan, two roommates who, convinced of their Nietzschean superiority, murder an old school friend, David Kentley. They hide the body in a wooden trunk, which they then use as the table for a cocktail party they are throwing, with their old teacher Rupert Cadell, Kentley's father Henry and Kentley's fiancee Janet Walker amongst the guests. As the party proceeds, the murderers' braggadocio starts to arouse Cadell's suspicions.

Quentin Tarantino's history-tweaking homage to the war movie sees the director back on exhilarating form. They become involved in a Jewish resistance fighter's plan to blow up the Parisian premiere of one of Goebbels' propaganda films - an event due to be attended by Hitler himself. Inglourious Basterds features the entertainingly showy performances, encyclopaedic movie references and oodles of self-conscious dialogue that you'd expect from a Tarantino film, as well as a superb turn from Christoph Waltz as a charmingly evil SS colonel. In English, and German, French and Italian with English subtitles.

Undefeated (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Daniel Lindsay and TJ Martin's gripping, Oscar-winning documentary tracks the fortunes of a Tennessee high school's American Football team - and its white middle-class coach's determined efforts to turn things around for his young, deprived black players. Sadly, the Manassas Tigers' absolute lack of success on the field - they've not won a single game for ten years - gives neither the players nor the school much relief from the hardships that economic depression has visited upon their neighbourhood. The documentary focuses on three of the team's members - OC Brown, whose hopes of making it to college look faint; Montrail 'Money' Brown, who's struggling with injury problems; and Chavis Daniels, who has already fallen disastrously foul of the law - as well as volunteer coach Bill Courtney, whose relatively privileged life away from the field is glimpsed, in addition to his inspiring efforts to galvanise the team and provide a strong role model for the young men in his charge.
