The villagers eagerly billet the soldiers but slowly their suspicions are aroused. However, the Germans move first and the village is held captive. Suspense mounts as the villagers attempt to outwit the enemy.

The storyline evokes with a convincing passion the determination of a nation that had to be defended against an invader. The setting is a small English village that is so cut off that the arrival of a car is an event. When lorryloads of Royal Engineers led by Major Ortler turn up, the villagers have no reason to suspect that they are really disguised German paratroopers, and that the squire, Oliver Wilsford, is a Fifth Columinst. The villagers eagerly billet the soldiers but slowly their suspicions are aroused. However, the Germans move first and the village is held captive. Suspense mounts as the villagers attempt to outwit the enemy.

And so the scene is set for a headlong rush by the McKennas to track down their son and effect his safe release, leading to a memorable climax at London's Royal Albert Hall. The film won an Oscar for Best Song: Whatever Will Be, Will Be, performed by Day.

Into the Abyss (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
Werner Herzog's feature-length documentary exploring a triple killing in the United States focuses on the fates of the two men convicted of the murders: Michael Perry and Jason Burkett. Fifty-year-old nurse Sandra Stotler, her son Adam and his friend Jeremy Richardson were all killed in October 2001 - seemingly for keys to Stotler's car. Burkett was given a life sentence for the crime and Perry was given death. This film features a number of interviews with Perry, who denies reponsibility for the killings, only eight days before his execution. It examines why people kill - what circumstances and what personal qualities drive them to the act - and also why the state feels compelled to do the same in response. Herzog makes no secret of the fact that he is opposed to capital punishment, but the message of the film is not a political one. He is far more concerned with the human cost of killing: both for the victims and for the perpetrators. Film 4 Premiere.
    Director: Werner Herzog
Starring: Werner Herzog, Richard Lopez, Michael Perry, Damon Hall, Lisa Stolter-Balloun, Charles Richardson
    (Premiere, Widescreen, Subtitles, 2011, 12, 4 Star)
