Tooth Fairy (Film) Film icon PG certificate
Dwayne Johnson stars in Michael Lembeck's family fantasy comedy about a tough-guy sportsman who learns the hard way not to puncture a child's illusions. Derek Thompson is an ice hockey pro whose main tactical use is the flattening of opponents - often depriving them of a tooth or two in the process. His aggression has earned him the nickname 'Tooth Fairy', but when he unsportingly tells his girlfriend's daughter that tooth fairies don't exist in reality, he's in for a bit of a shock. Unknown to him they do - and they take great umbrage at his slight. Thompson is whipped away to Fairy Land, where he's tried for his misdemeanour and sentenced to a week's community service as a tooth fairy. Thus he sprouts wings, is furnished with an outfit completely at odds with his usual image and is given Tracy as a mentor. And, as the comedic misunderstandings and slapstick errors steadily mount, it's clear Thompson wasn't cut out for his new line of work.

Gulliver's Travels (Film) Film icon PG certificate
Jack Black stars in this take on Jonathan Swift's 1726 novel, though director Rob Letterman's family-friendly version tones down the earthier satire and concentrates just on Gulliver's early adventures. Lemuel Gulliver works in the post room of a New York newspaper. You see, Bill is the head of a gang of criminals who deal drugs and aren't exactly strangers to violence, and it now looks very much as though there's an informant in their midst. Spirited Away (Film) Film icon 5 star rating PG certificate
An Oscar-winning animated fantasy adventure from the Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki. Ten-year-old Chihiro and her parents are moving home, though - sad at leaving her friends behind - it's not with good grace on her part. Driving through the woods, they realise they must have taken a wrong turn when the road peters out in a dead end. Hungry, they get out of the car and walk down a mysterious alleyway, which emerges into what her father imagines is a theme park, though it's eerily uninhabited. Exploring, they find empty restaurants, where Chihiro's parents greedily sate their hunger, and the girl discovers a boy called Haku, who warns her to get away before dark.
    Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Starring: Rumi Hragi, Miyu Irino, Mari Natsuki, Takashi Nait, Yasuko Sawaguchi, Tatsuya Gashuin

    13:25

Doctor Dolittle (Film) Film icon 3 star rating PG certificate
Betty Thomas's remake of the 1967 film is neatly updated with Eddie Murphy playing Dr John Dolittle, who talks to the animals. Dolittle and his pushy partner Mark Weller hope to strike a lucrative deal with a major corporation, but more and more of Dolittle's time is taken up giving CPR to lab rats and talking a suicidal tiger out of jumping from five storeys up. The film works because Murphy's character is played relatively straight while the creatures are allowed to be cynically sarcastic about him, humans and others species. Special plaudits go to the lab rats voiced by Reni Santoni and John Leguizamo, Chris Rock as Rocky the guinea pig and Norm Macdonald as Dolittle's laconic companion Lucky the dog.
    Director: Betty Thomas
Starring: Eddie Murphy, Ossie Davis, Oliver Platt, Peter Boyle, Richard Schiff, Kristen Wilson
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1998, PG, 3 Star)

    19:15

The Brady Bunch Movie (Film) Film icon PG certificate
Betty Thomas directs this comedy about one of America's favourite TV families of the 70s. Except it's now the 90s and, while the world has moved on, they haven't. Parents Mike and Carol and their brood are now irritating anachronisms rather than the loved, slightly goofy family they once were. But worse, they've forgotten to pay their property taxes and their neighbour Mr Dittmeyer sees his chance to buy their home, orange Formica kitchen fittings and all, and raze it to the ground as part of a property development scheme. Can the family raise $20,000 necessary to save their house in just one week? Watch out for cameo appearances from some of the original cast. Edited for content.
    Director: Betty Thomas
Starring: Shelley Long, Gary Cole, Christine Taylor, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Jennifer Elise Cox, Paul Sutera
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 1995, PG, 2 Star)

    21:00

The Tourist (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp star in Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's romantic action-thriller. American tourist Frank Tupelo is visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. On a train to Venice, the beautiful Elise Clifton-Ward sits next to him, and a romance seems to bud. Elise invites Frank to stay with her at a hotel, and then to attend a ball in the evening. But there's more to this seemingly flawless girl than meets the eye: hers is a complex world of vicious gangsters, fraud and millions of stolen dollars. And Elise has placed him at the centre of it merely as a decoy, hoping to convince her pursuers that he is her real lover, his appearance altered by plastic surgery, so that she and her embezzler boyfriend can make good their escape. It seems to work: when Elise abandons him at the ball, Frank is chased by gangster Reginald Shaw and his men.
    Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Starring: Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton, Steven Berkoff, Rufus Sewell
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2010, 12, 4 Star)

    23:05

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 18 certificate
Raucous comedy starring John Cho and Kal Penn, with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg taking the directors' chairs for this outing in addition to their regular writing duties. When the stoner duo unwisely smuggle their drugs paraphernalia on to a US bound flight from Amsterdam, US Homeland Security misinterpret their intentions and they are promptly shipped off to the infamous US Army detention camp in Cuba. And so the scene is set for a series of none-too-subtle gags as our THC-loving heroes seek to make their escape. Sophisticated it may not be, but if crude and politically incorrect humour is your thing then there are certainly plenty of laughs to be had here. And the film also seems to raise the question of who's the more paranoid: two long-term marijuana users or the US Government.
    Director: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg
Starring: John Cho, Kal Penn, Rob Corddry, Jack Conley, Roger Bart, Neil Patrick Harris
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2008, 18, 4 Star)

    Director: Neil LaBute
Starring: Morgan Freeman, Rene Zellweger, Chris Rock, Greg Kinnear, Aaron Eckhart

And when he does finally make it, he discovers that many of them have been packed up and sent off for storage at the Smithsonian in Washington.

Howl's Moving Castle (Film) Film icon 4 star rating U certificate
Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-nominated follow-up to the acclaimed Spirited Away is a beguiling fantasy about love, transformation and self-acceptance. In a village in a war-torn land, a shy teenager called Sophie works in a hat shop and lives in the shadow of her glamorous sister Lettie, until she encounters the infamous wizard Howl. The meeting incites the jealousy of the Witch of the Waste, who transforms Sophie into a wizened old lady. Sophie's subsequent quest to lift the curse brings her firmly into Howl's world. Miyazaki paints her journey with characteristic vigour and ingenuity, gleefully exploiting a steampunk aesthetic which has its greatest iteration in the castle of the title: a bloated Gothic mansion that heaves itself along on four spindly legs to an accompaniment of groans and wheezes. This screening is of the English-dubbed version of the film, which includes impressive vocal performances from a cast including Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Jean Simmons and Billy Crystal.
    Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Starring: Chieko Baisho, Takuya Kimura, Akihiro Miwa, Tatsuya Gashuin, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mitsunori Isaki

Baby's Day Out (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
Patrick Read Johnson's comedy, scripted by John Hughes, stars Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano and Brian Haley as Eddie, Norby and Veeko, three inept criminals who kidnap Baby Bink, the son of a rich Chicago family. But while they are negotiating the ransom, Baby Bink escapes and begins to make his way back home. As the trio chase him, the infant manages to avoid a series of violent hazards, which his pursuers run straight into. The film owes much to the kind of cartoon violence that Road Runner inflicted upon Wile E Coyote, where falls and explosions are slapstick rather than fatal, while the interaction of the three criminals carries Hughes' trademark quick-fire humour. Edited for content.

A kids' sci-fi comedy-adventure from director John Schultz, penned by British screenwriter Mark Burton. Teen maths whiz Tom Pearson is on holiday with his extended family at a remote lakeside cottage, where he and the other children make an unexpected discovery: four small, green extra-terrestrial creatures lurking in the loft. The aliens are freshly arrived from outer space and don't waste too much time in setting about their goal - the subjugation of mankind. However, it's equally swiftly apparent that their chosen method of conquest - a mind-control device - only works on adults. And so the scene is set for Tom and the other minors to make a brave stand against the incomers on behalf of Earth's human population.

Mike becomes increasingly desperate to have Susan for himself - with tragic results - as the extraordinary climax is acted out in the empty swimming pool. Look out for Diana Dors in a cameo role exuding vaudevillian sauciness as a sexually voracious customer trying to seduce Mike.
    Director: Jerzy Skolimowski
Starring: Jane Asher, John Moulder-Brown, Karl Michael Vogler, Christopher Sandford, Diana Dors, Louise Martini
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1970, 15, 4 Star)

    Director: Hayao Miyazaki
Starring: Chieko Baisho, Takuya Kimura, Akihiro Miwa, Tatsuya Gashuin, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mitsunori Isaki
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Subtitled, In Japanese with English Subtitles, 2004, U, 4 Star)
