Get Him to the Greek (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Russell Brand and Jonah Hill star in Nicholas Stoller's boisterous comedy. Aaron Green works for a record company run by the increasingly unhinged Sergio and is a huge fan of the British rock star Aldous Snow. Sergio and Green hatch a plan for Snow to play, in just three days' time, Los Angeles's revered venue the Greek Theatre. Getting Snow from London to LA, via New York and Vegas, should be a doddle. But he's just fallen off the wagon, and the sleazy rocker's appetite for drink, drugs and attractive women complicate the journey so much that it's not clear whether Green will survive the rock star's hedonism. In addition to Combs' superbly energetic turn, Rose Byrne shines as Jackie Q, a role that satirises the record industry's fondness for marketing its female artists as sexual commodities. Also starring Elisabeth Moss, Colm Meaney and a host of real-life music icons.
    Director: Nicholas Stoller
Starring: Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, Rose Byrne, Tyler McKinney, Zoe Salmon, Lino Facioli

It is 1985 and Richard Nixon continues his tenure in the White House, massively popular with the electorate following his crushing defeat of the Viet Cong. However, it seems that the American public have fallen out of love with their superheroes, one of whom, Dr Manhattan, was largely responsible for the winning the Vietnam War. Now, he and his fellow crime-fighters are regarded as reprehensible vigilantes and have been banned by law. But, when one of their number - the vile, ironically named Comedian - is murdered, the former heroes begin to re-emerge from the shadows to investigate. They discover that a terrifying plan is afoot.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate
Director Scott Derrickson's remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic replaces the original's theme of fear of impending nuclear war with current concerns about environmental catastrophe. Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, an alien sent by a confederation of extraterrestrial beings to warn the inhabitants of Earth that the biosphere is on the verge of collapse. Predictably, as soon as he emerges from his spaceship a trigger-happy soldier ignores his instructions and takes a shot at the visitor. The wounded Klaatu asks for access to the United Nations to deliver his message, but the Secretary of Defence, Regina Jackson, instead orders that he should be taken away for further investigations. Klaatu becomes increasingly convinced that Earth can only survive if mankind is eradicated.
    Director: Scott Derrickson

I Love You Phillip Morris (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor star in this comedy from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Steven Russell is seemingly the ultimate wholesome family man: he plays the organ at church, celebrates good news with a nice glass of healthy milk and prays nightly beside his blonde, blue-eyed wife. But a car accident is the catalyst for him to reassess his life; he admits that he is gay, and enthusiastically embraces the epitome of what he imagines a gay lifestyle to be. But his new lifestyle is expensive and he ends up in jail for fraud. There he meets the sensitive Phillip Morris, who he's determined to free from prison - through a series of inventive cons - so that they can secure a future together. McGregor provides the heart of the film, while Carrey turns in a compelling and poignant performance. It's perhaps surprising that this funny and original film is based on a true story.
    Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Ted Alderman, Nicolas Alexandre
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2009, 15, 3 Star)

While lodging at the plush LA property, Greenberg attempts a reconciliation with his erstwhile bandmate Ivan and begins an affair with his brother's personal assistant Florence, who's a good 15 years younger than him. And, after experiencing a bizarre religious revelation, it's not a massive surprise to see him stitching together a red 'superhero' outfit and, as The Crimson Bolt, heading out in the world to dispense summary justice. But what is surprising is the degree of violence with which the wrench-wielding vigilante attacks largely innocent bystanders - as is the relationship the anger-crazed middle-aged man develops with Libby, a much younger woman who works in a comic-book store... Film4 premiere.
    Director: James Gunn
Starring: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Andre Royo
(Premiere, Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2010, 18)

The Foot Fist Way (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Jody Hill's low-budget martial arts mockumentary comedy stars Danny McBride as an instructor who unwittingly embarks on a journey of personal enlightenment. Fred Simmons is an arrogant, strict Taekwondo teacher with a small gym in a small town in North Carolina. His pupils are largely a bunch of eccentrics and people lacking in self-confidence, in whom he tries to instil the noble virtues of courtesy, self-control, perseverance, integrity and indomitable spirit. His acolytes also turn to their instructor for off-mat advice, which is ironic as Simmons doesn't appear to know how to hold his own life together. After hearing shocking news about his wife, he decides to seek help from his own hero, the z-list action movie star Chuck 'The Truck' Wallace. And that's when Simmons' troubles really begin.
    Director: Jody Hill

Arrietty (Film) Film icon 4 star rating U certificate
Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi's first feature for the Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli is a charming adaptation of Mary Norton's classic children's tales about The Borrowers. This version takes place in an ordinary house in an unremarkable Tokyo suburb. Of course, that's omitting one highly extraordinary fact: a family of tiny people live underneath the floorboards of the building's ground floor. The Clocks have a comfortable life, scavenging items from the 'human beans' living oblivious above them, which they beautifully transform into clothes, furniture and the rest of life's necessities.

    (500) Days of Summer (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 12 certificate
Director Marc Webbs' feature debut is a romantic comedy, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, which unconventionally focuses on the heartache of unrequited love. Tom Hansen is making a living writing soppy messages for greetings cards. It wasn't meant to be this way - he had hoped to train as an architect, but that didn't quite go to plan. However, things start to look up when his boss hires a new secretary, the ethereally beautiful Summer Finn. Tom is a believer in true love and, on meeting Summer for the first time, is certain he has found 'the one'. Unfortunately, Summer couldn't be more cynical when it comes to romance. She and Tom gradually find they have more and more in common, but she repeatedly repels his amorous advances. And so Tom recounts in flashback, and in no particular order, the highs and lows of the 500 days during which he attempted to persuade her to ditch her scepticism and embrace love - with him.
    Director: Marc Webb
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Geoffrey Arend, Chloë Grace Moretz, Matthew Gray Gubler, Clark Gregg
(Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2009, 12, 4 Star)

Together, Garrett and Megan's friends Jessica, Chugs and Ellie take the 'corpse' off to a disused quarry for disposal. Unfortunately, at the quarry things don't go to plan and Megan is killed by accident. After a quick discussion, the shocked students decide to hide their friend's body and hope for the best. Eight months later it seems as though they have managed to get away with their crime. House of Flying Daggers (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 15 certificate
Following hot on the heels of Hero, director Zhang Zimou brings another beautifully filmed, artistic and impressive Chinese film to the big screen. Like its predecessor, it's a "wuxia" film, dealing with classic swordplay and chivalry themes. Alongside these traditional aspects there's the very modern 21st century CGI, which allows the daggers of the title to do their flying, as well as enhancing the balletic style of much of the action. The plot concerns a blind outlaw who's tricked by a couple of cops into betraying a band of killers. But the plot is largely subservient to the supremely well choreographed martial arts action.
    Director: Yimou Zhang
Starring: Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau, Ziyi Zhang, Dandan Song
(Subtitles, Subtitled, In Mandarin with English Subtitles, 2004, 15, 4 Star)

August Rush (Film) Film icon 4 star rating PG certificate
Kirsten Sheridan's family drama stars Freddie Highmore as Evan Taylor, a musical prodigy searching for his parents. When pregnant cellist Lyla Novacek was hit by a car, her controlling father and manager told her she'd lost the baby; in reality she gave birth prematurely and her father sent the infant to an orphanage. Eleven years later, when Evan finds out that his parents are alive, he sets out to locate them, taking inspiration from the music around him. The heart of the film is Evan's almost mystical ability to 'feel' music, a challenging concept that is rendered believable thanks to inventive work from the composer of the main score, Mark Mancina. August Rush also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Evan's rock singer father, and Robin Williams as a modern day Fagin who Evan meets during his search for his family.
    Director: Kirsten Sheridan

With nods to Frankenstein, Alien, Species and the body horror of early David Cronenberg, the plot sees the pair secretly splicing human DNA into a cocktail of other genetic material, with consequences that highlight the scientists' character flaws as much as the danger posed by the result of the experiment.

Rush Hour 3 (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 12 certificate
Brett Ratner's martial-arts action-comedy sequel starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. When the Chinese Ambassador to the US is shot while divulging the whereabouts of a major Triad leader, the American authorities once again send Chief Inspector Lee and Detective James Carter into the fray. Lee quickly corners the would-be assassin, Kenji, but Lee's shock at coming face-to-face with an old friend gives the baddie just enough time to escape. Kenji's trail leads the mismatched cops to Paris, where car chases and a sequence among the under-dressed dancers of the Folies Bergore await them, plus rather a lot of dodgy French stereotypes and a finale atop the Eiffel Tower. Also starring Youki Kudoh and Noimie Lenoir, together with, in unlikely cameos, Max von Sydow and Roman Polanski.
    Director: Brett Ratner
Starring: Chris Tucker, Jackie Chan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Youki Kudoh, Max von Sydow, Yvan Attal
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2007, 12, 3 Star)

The Reef (Film) Film icon 3 star rating 15 certificate
Australian horror. A group of friends on a sailing holiday are dumped in the water when their boat capsizes after it crashes into a reef. Unfortunately they're in shark-populated waters and there's a very hungry Great White in the vicinity. The friends are faced with a terrifying choice: stay on board with little hope of rescue or swim 12 miles to the nearest island. Director Andrew Traucki, who was also behind the camera for acclaimed monster hit Black Water, manages the horror well as the pulse-pounding, visually stunning thriller maintains its bite right to the very end.
    Director: Andrew Traucki
Starring: Damian Walshe-Howling, Gyton Grantley, Adrienne Pickering, Zoe Naylor, Kieran Darcy-Smith, Mark Simpson
    (Widescreen, Subtitles, 2010, 15, 3 Star)

Don't Look Now (Film) Film icon 4 star rating 18 certificate
Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie star in Nicolas Roeg's Bafta-winning supernatural thriller, based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier. Following the death of their young daughter, who drowns in the grounds of their home, grieving couple John and Laura Baxter depart to an out-of-season Venice where John is working as a church restorer. But after Laura has an encounter with a mystical blind woman she begins to believe that her child might be alive after all. And then a sceptical John catches glimpses of a red-hooded child and gives chase through the eerie and labyrinthine streets of the city. But is this figure purely in their minds or are they being led by darker forces? Roeg crafted a brave and fierce study in obsession and grief, from Sutherland and Christie's love-making scene to the nightmare chases through Venice, sequences that link backwards and forwards through movie history, referencing and influencing Hitchcock, Death in Venice, Schindler's List, Fellini, and Bresson.
    Director: Nicolas Roeg
Starring: Julie Christie, Donald Sutherland, Hilary Mason, Clelia Matania, Massimo Serato, Renato Scarpa
    (Subtitles, 1973, 18, 4 Star)
