Eutelsat Communications announced that its latest satellite, Eutelsat 8 West B, has arrived at the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, and is now in final stages of preparation for launch by an Ariane 5 rocket on 20 August. The new satellite will shore up the 7/8 degrees West position, which hosts Eutelsat and Nilesat satellites offering TV service to over 52 million homes in the Middle East and North Africa. It will provide sufficient bandwidth for broadcasters to deliver HD today and Ultra HD in the future. The 5.8 tonne satellite was built by Thales Alenia Space. It is equipped with 40 Ku-band transponders and 10 C-band transponders connected to a broad footprint covering the African continent and reaching South America. Eutelsat 8 West B is due to go into full commercial service in early October.
