Qatar-based television network Al Jazeera and Spanish broadcaster Mediapro are prepared to pay up to EUR 250 million for the rights to show a Real Madrid or Barcelona football game every week, according to Spanish sports daily Marca. The companies recently announced an agreement to launch the Qatari network's beIN Sports channel in Spain on 01 August and are preparing to submit their bid for the rights to broadcast matches from La Liga, Spain's top-tier league. The rights are to be sold in up to 13 packages by the country's official football league, Liga de Futbol Professional (LFP), which has introduced UK-style collective bargaining in a bid to raise up to EUR 1.25 billion per season. The new beIN Sports channel is above all interested in the package that includes the rights to screen 20 Barcelona games and another 20 Real Madrid games in a premium slot, possibly 18:15 on Saturdays, said the report.
