Subscription-free UK satellite TV service Freesat added 12,000 subscriber homes in the first quarter, taking the total to 1.9 million, with 4 million viewers a week. The operator also announced that its Freetime IPTV service doubled subscriber additions in the first quarter, compared to the first quarter of 2014. Freetime accounts for half of all Freesat STB sales for the fourth consecutive quarter. The Freesat App has been downloaded over 500,000 times, meeting the company’s objective after a year since launch.

Remote record continues to be an important area of development and differentiation since its initial launch as a key feature of the Freesat App in January 2014. The strong take up of the service led Freesat to offer the feature via e-mail to Freetime PVR customers in January. Results have been positive with the number of customers setting remote recordings doubling every month. The popularity of the service has since driven its continued expansion across social media and the Freesat website.

Finally, the company has released the first remote control specification through the FreeTV Alliance, launched late last year with France’s Fransat, Italy’s Tivusat and Germany’s HD Plus. The group will release more specifications to support the growth and harmonisation of free to air satellite TV services across Europe.
