Qatar-based television network Al Jazeera and Spanish broadcaster Mediapro are set to launch a joint bid to secure live TV rights to broadcast matches from La Liga, Spainís top-tier league, according to unnamed sources cited by El Confidencial Digital. The companies last week announced an agreement to launch the Qatari networkís beIN Sports channel in Spain on 01 August and talks are now focusing on submitting a joint bid for the La Liga rights to compete with Telefonica. The bid would be launched via Mediaproís sports rights unit, Futmedia.
The countryís official football league, Liga de Futbol Professional (LFP), is attempting to introduce UK-style collective bargaining for TV rights before the start of the 2016-17 season and is said to have reached an agreement with the clubs, but the corresponding decree enforcing the deal has yet to be passed by the government. Spanish clubs currently share around EUR 850 million per season in rights, although Barcelona recently announced that it has signed a one-season rights deal with Telefonica for EUR 140 million
