Exclusive football rights polish beIN LaLiga’s ratings

beIN LaLiga has claimed strong viewership in Spain, but they are far from those that football gets on free-to-air (FTA) TV.

bein laliga 27 may 2017About to complete its first year on air, beIN La Liga has finally released audience figures, which show that the Mediapro-managed channel has become one of the most-watched pay-TV channels in Spain.

The highest ratings of the 2016/2017 football season were reached with last December’s El Clásico. The Barcelona v Real Madrid game delivered an average 2.2 million viewers and 17.31% (52.3% share if only analysing pay-TV) for beIN La Liga.

Also, the beIN Media channel claims that seven live broadcastings have pulled in over one million viewers.

Even though the numbers are positive, especially taking into account that several channels share La Liga’s pay-TV rights, figures are far from those delivered by football when broadcast by FTA networks. For instance, Mediapro’s GOL averaged 5.33 million viewers with the Copa del Rey semi-final between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid. The Champions League semi-finals, reported Atresmedia’s Antena 3 nearly nine million viewers on average.

Hispasat 36W-1 becomes operational over LATAM, Europe

The Hispasat 36W-1 satellite has reached its final orbital position at 36° West and it will begin to offer comms services over South America and Europe.

hispasat 36w 1 27 may 2017With 20 transponders on the Ku-band and additional capacity on the Ka-band, the satellite is the first mission of the new SmallGEO platform, developed by Germany’s OHB System AG, the European Space Agency and Hispasat.

This platform allows a substantial reduction in satellite mass thanks to the use of electric propulsion throughout the lifespan of the satellite, which lifted off from the base of Kourou in French Guiana on 27 January aboard a Soyuz rocket from Arianespace.

The H36W-1 satellite also incorporates RedSAT, a regenerative payload consisting of a novel active antenna with reconfigurable beams that, together with the on-board processor, improves the efficiency and performance offered by the satellite.

Android TV debuts updated programming guide, Google Assistant

Google has launched Android O, which makes it easier for users to access content from Android TV apps.

Android O includes a new, content-centric home screen experience for Android TV, and integration of the Google Assistant for voice-controlled navigation.

The new Android TV home screen organises video content into channels and programmes in a way that’s familiar to TV viewers. Each Android TV app can publish multiple channels, which are represented as rows of programmes on the home screen. Apps add relevant programmes on each channel, and update these programmes and channels as users access content or when new content is available. To help engage users, programmes can include a video preview, which is automatically played when a user focuses on a programme. Users can configure which channels they wish to see on the home screen, and the ordering of channels, so the themes and shows they’re interested in are quick and easy to access.

Also, the top of the new Android TV home screen now includes a quick launch bar for users' favourite apps, and a special Watch Next channel. This channel contains programmes based on the viewing habits of the user.

Google said that the APIs for creating and maintaining channels and programmes are part of the TvProvider APIs, which are distributed as an Android Support Library module with Android O. Later this year, Nexus Players will receive the new Android TV home experience as an OTA update.

Meanwhile, the Google Assistant on Android TV, coming later this year, will allow users to find and access content using their voice. Because the Assistant is context-aware, it can help users narrow down what content to play. Users will also be able access the Assistant to control playback, even while a video or music is playing.

The Assistant can control compatible smart home devices too, so viewers can dim the lights to create an ideal movie viewing environment.

Google Assistant will launch in the US on Android devices running M, N, and O.

Sony gives beIN SPORTS the red card from PlayStation

A retrans row in the US is nothing new among cable channels, but the phenomenon has spread to the games arenas with beIN SPORTS being pulled from Sony PlayStation Vue.
beIN logo Feb 2017.jpgOver the course of the last few years, the Al Jazeera-owned beIN SPORTS has held the rights to major sports events, in particular football such as the Champions League. This has been increasingly popular among all audiences in particular the growing Hispanic market.

However, beIN SPORTS has announced that it has reached an impasse involving its contract negotiations to run on the PlayStation Vue channel and that Sony has removed the offer from the PSVUE service.

In a statement beIN SPORTS said: “Because of this unilateral decision, our loyal subscribers like you will be deprived of access to beIN as of today. We made every possible effort to reach a deal with Sony since we believe the top sports leagues, games, insights and analysis should be made available to the largest possible audience of fans. Regrettably, Sony has decided that our value proposition is not enough for their viewers.”

Intelsat, Dalkom team to broaden EMEA satellite services

intelsat 10 Jun 2016Integrated satellite communications provider Intelsat has signed an agreement with Somalian telco Dalkom to expand the latter’s direct-to-home services in East and Central Africa and the Middle East.

Under a multi-year agreement, Dalkom will incorporate Ku-band satellite services provided by Intelsat 17 to extend offers currently delivered by its fibre network. This includes expanding broadband enterprise networks into countries such as South Sudan and Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the Middle East. Dalkom will also add DTH services to its portfolio in Somalia. Intelsat 17, located at 66° East, is part of Intelsat’s video neighbourhood in the Indian Ocean region.

“We have a strong terrestrial fibre network, but our opportunities to expand into new regions and capitalise on new opportunities were limited,” explained Dalkom CEO Mohamed Jama. “By adding Intelsat’s satellite expertise to our network, we can expand our enterprise services into regions where terrestrial technology cannot provide services. Intelsat 17 will also allow us to capitalise on Intelsat’s media distribution knowledge to introduce DTH services for customers. This makes Dalkom the first company to offer these bundled services in Somalia, offering our customers a one stop shop for communication solutions.”

“The ability to deliver broadband enterprise and DTH services via the same platform provides easy access to new markets and customers without worrying about network reach and reliability,” added Brian Jakins, Intelsat's vice president, Africa. “This allows Dalkom to focus on growing its business. Our satellite platform will also complement its fibre services by serving as an instantly available back-up to protect against any service interruptions.”

    EUTELSAT 172B begins orbital ascent

Launched by an Ariane 5 rocket, the EUTELSAT 172B satellite has entered a new phase of its journey in space with the initiation of its ascent to geostationary orbit.

eutelsat 11june2017The Airbus-built first European high power electric satellite will take approximately four months to complete the climb to its targeted 172° East video neighbourhood and is scheduled to enter into service in the fourth quarter of 2017. Since launch, the craft has undertaken a series of manoeuvres that include positioning of electric propulsion motors attached to robotic arms in preparation for orbit-raising, and the full deployment of solar panels to generate power.

As well as video services, EUTELSAT 172B was also designed to deliver increased capacity for applications such as in-flight and maritime connectivity. It will be located at a key neighbourhood providing what Eutelsat claims is ‘exceptional’ reach over land and sea in the Asia-Pacific region, from Alaska to Australia. Designed to replace EUTELSAT 172A, which will continue commercial service at another orbital position following the transfer of traffic to the new satellite, EUTELSAT 172B is also said to be to provide increased capacity, more power and improved coverage via C- and Ku-band payloads connected to a range of service areas.

“A week since launch, EUTELSAT 172B has passed the critical stages of its deployment before embarking on the ascent to geo,” remarked Eutelsat CEO Rodolphe Belmer. “This complex process reflects meticulous preparation by Eutelsat and Airbus teams who have worked hand in hand on a groundbreaking satellite programme customised for Asia-Pacific markets.”

Facebook charts a course for original content

Plans for Facebook’s original content slate have surfaced: the social network has contracted to release a scripted TV series called Loosely Exactly Nicole, and a reality competition called Last State Standing.

It was against this backdrop that Apple this week announced it was bringing in heavy hitters to supercharge its own original content drive.

Loosely Exactly Nicole is a half-hour comedy that aired for one season before MTV cancelled it last October. It features 30-year-old comedian Nicole Byer and is based on her life. It was developed by Mina Lefevre, EVP at MTV, before she left in February to become head of development at Facebook.

Last State Standing is a new series from A. Smith and Co, the producer of the obstacle course competition series American Ninja Warrior and Kitchen Nightmares. It will feature one contestant from each of the 50 United States, who will compete in “unique and crazy games”, according to the Hollywood Reporter the Hollywood Reporter.

The outlet also reported that in addition to traditional TV fare like these it will also work to develop short-form digital series in partnership with BuzzFeed, Vox, ATTN and Group Nine Media. The efforts are supposed to go live later in the summer.

Apple meanwhile has hired Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, who are joining Apple in newly created positions overseeing all aspects of video programming. They come to Apple from Sony Pictures Television, where they have served as presidents since 2005, and have been responsible for a range of programming, including favourites such as Breaking Bad and its spinoff Better Call Saul, The Crown, Rescue Me and others.

"Jamie and Zack are two of the most talented TV executives in the world and have been instrumental in making this the golden age of television," said Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. "We have exciting plans in store for customers and can't wait for them to bring their expertise to Apple — there is much more to come."

Original content can keep Apple competitive with the successes of Amazon and Netflix exclusives and draw buyers to Apple TV, which will be increasingly important as competition increases with the entry of Facebook and others into the mix. Apple has slowly rolled out some original programmes, including a recently released Shark Tank-inspired app developer competition show called Planet of the Apps, which received mixed reviews. A streaming version of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke was also announced.

"It will be an honour to be part of the Apple team," said Erlicht. "We want to bring to video what Apple has been so successful with in its other services and consumer products — unparalleled quality."

    Live streaming evolves beyond sports

While sports have been a major driver for live television viewing, a survey of online video service providers (OVSPs) shows that the focus of live delivery is moving in new directions on the digital front.

akamai 18 june 2017According to research from Akamai, about half (56%) of OVSPs said their services are focused around live events like awards shows and conferences, while just 15% deliver live sports.

“The live events OVSPs are streaming are not one-off, infrequent events,” the report noted. “Their offerings are clearly meant to be a destination for their intended audience. Two-thirds of the OVSPs provide more than one simultaneous stream, and a quarter provide six or more. In addition, 56% of respondents indicated that their service delivers six or more events a month, with 14% delivering daily events and 18% running 24x7 or linear channel simulcast services.”

Also, OVSPs primarily target the PC and smartphone with their live streaming services. Akamai noted that they should reconsider this platform priority as other screens drive significant video usage.

On the monetisation front, 39% of OVSPs say their services do not make money and provide only non-monetary value. Also, 38% derive revenue from advertising and sponsorship. Despite the popularity of subscription VOD, only 23% say they use subscriptions to monetise their service. And 17% leverage pay-per-view to monetise their live streaming service. Shockingly, only 9% use targeted dynamic ad insertion.

The standard for live streaming is high definition; very few OVSPs use higher quality formats like UHD or high frame rates. Over two-thirds provide multi-camera angles to enhance their service offerings. Interactive features, used by 29% of respondents, constitute the next most popular enhancement.

Video-stream quality and stream reliability are at the top of the list of challenges that impact live streaming services, according to the survey. Minimising streaming costs and reducing stream latency are also important. Video buffering continues to define what people think of as “bad” video, so 86% of OVSPs cite buffering as being emblematic of quality problems, and the rebuffering rate is the parameter with which OVSPs are most concerned. Bitrate is the second most important concern, and 60% cited audio sync problems as a key factor impacting quality. Surprisingly, just 20% cite video latency as defining bad video quality.

If OVSPs could improve just one of the quality parameters, 26% would choose rebuffering rate and 24% would enhance live latency.

Maintaining a quality service requires two fundamental things: know what you’re going to measure to check quality and know how you’re going to measure it. Most OVSPs who participated in this study are not ready to do this. Just 44% have established key performance indicators (KPIs) to track quality, and only 35% say they’ve planned to have their operations team partner with the CDN to measure service performance.

Chile’s Movistar launches 360º platform for ConfeCup football

Alexis Sánchez, star of Chile’s national football team, is the main character in Movistar’s 360º platform for FIFA’s ConfeCup.

alexis movistar chile 17 june 2017Through the #ModoFutbol website, Movistar has released a 360º video, starring an 80-year-old Sánchez, to promote the ConfeCup’s mobile app, on which the telco will live broadcast all the games. The tournament begins today (17 June) with the opening match between Russia and New Zealand.

The interactive video has several clickable points which tell different stories about Chile’s football and Sánchez's career, which includes playing for FC Barcelona and Arsenal.

As announced two weeks ago, Movistar Chile reached an agreement with Mountrigi Management Group to stream the entire FIFA’s ConfeCup on mobile devices. The project will be then extended to Russia 2018 World Cup and India 2017 U17 World Cup.

As Telefónica’s unit with the strongest investment in developing reliable live over-the-top (OTT) programming, Movistar Chile had already tested a similar mobile platform with the national football league and the Copa Chile.
