Movistar serves Davis Cup streams across Chile

Movistar is to stream the first Davis Cup round of the year across Chile, while also broadcasting it through satellite and IPTV.

copa davis movistarThe tennis matches, to be played over the weekend in the Dominican Republic, will feature the Caribbean team vs Chile’s team. All of them will be streamed through movistarchile.tv and broadcast on Movistar TV.

It’s not the first time Telefónica’s Chilean subsidiary has tried out online broadcasting, as it already streamed Copa Davis’s last round of 2016 along with the Modo Mundial and Odesur events. This year, Movistar Chile will gradually increase streaming as part of its multi-screen strategy.

“We have noticed a higher demand of online video consumption, which is supplementary to pay-TV,” said Rodolfo Mardónez, vice-manager of content at Movistar Chile.

“Customers want to access content on any device at any time, including the traditional platforms, which is why we are delivering the Copa Davis through IPTV and satellite TV, but also through online streaming.”

Sponsorships and registration open for 4K 4Charity at NAB 2017

4K4Charity NAB 2017 Image4Now firmly established as part of the main event, the 4K 4Charity Fun Run at NAB 2017 is now up and running for business.

Featuring a 4km run and walk through Sunset Park in Las Vegas, the event will be held on 25 April, as ever organised by Elemental Technologies in conjunction with the 2017 NAB Show. Since launching in 2014, the 4K 4Charity Fun Run Series has attracted nearly 4,000 participants and raised close to $400,000 for non-profit organisations.

The April 2017 event will raise proceeds for Mercy Corps, which works with the most vulnerable women and adolescents in crises, providing safe places, education opportunities, job skills training and community engagement projects to help them build a strong tomorrow, and will also contribute to Women Who Code, a global non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring women to pursue and excel in technology careers and helping them become leaders and role models in the tech industry.

“We’re heartened by what the 4K 4Charity Fun Run Series has achieved to date, thanks to the generosity of sponsors and participants, in raising awareness and funds for vital causes,” said Elemental’s Laura Barber, co-founder of the series. “As we look forward, we recognise that the media and entertainment industry – like so many industries – can and must do more to support diversity and inclusion. With the support of NAB Show and its members, it’s an honour to devote 100% of this year’s proceeds towards that mission.”

The 4K 4Charity Fun Run at the 2017 NAB Show has already attracted sponsors from leading members of the broadcast technology industry. These include Aspera, Dolby, Verimatrix, Accedo, Irdeto, ChyronHego, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and media partners NewBay Media and Rapid TV News, which will also be actively participating in the run.

UK TV exports shoot to £1.326BN in 2016

There may a lot of angst about how the UK will shape up in a post-Brexit world and how the world will see the country, but for the TV industry at least in 2016 it was a case of cool Britannia.

pact data 4Feb 2017According to data released by Pact — the trade association representing the commercial interests of UK independent television, film, digital, children’s and animation media companies — UK television programmes generated sales to international markets in 2015/16 rising to £1.326 billion, a 10% increase on the previous report period.

The UK Television Exports Report showed that the US remained the UK’s largest export market, with sales increasing by 16% in 2015/16 to almost £0.5 billion.

Australia was the second largest market, with sales of £106 million. Yet despite what may be seen as logical success in English-speaking markets, the report also observed a noticeable increase in activity in the Chinese market, which was up 40% on 2014/15. Moreover, a co-production treaty between the UK and China signed in December 2016 means that this figure could be set to rise even more in years to come. Europe was the biggest market for sales of formats, and exports to France grew 5% to £73 million in 2015/16, making it Britain’s biggest non-English speaking market and its third biggest overall.

Exports of finished television programming remained the largest source of revenue at £668 million, in line with 2014/15. However, sales of digital rights increased 79% to £248 million. This figure was almost a fifth of total revenue, making it the second largest source of TV revenue.

The UK Television Exports Report survey also highlighted the increasing importance of digital rights, particularly on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon. Respondents strongly affirmed that there would be further opportunity for growth from this area.

British innovation and creativity are considered among the greatest assets of the sector and the report showed that there was important future growth potential for the industry, remarked Mark Garnier, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Department for International Trade (DIT) and author of the report’s foreword. Commenting on the report, he said: “From The Night Manager to Downton Abbey, UK TV exports continue to go from strength to strength and UK programmes are some of the most recognisable and eagerly anticipated in the world… From small creative digital and animation companies to major production houses, the UK leads the world in television production and I look forward to continuing to work with the sector to grow UK exports.”

Looking forward, the report also noted that the industry saw economic and political uncertainty, particularly in Europe, as one of the obstacles to further growth next year. Currently, respondents remained confident that TV export revenues would increase next year from further sales in both established markets such as the US and newer markets in territories such as Asia, Latin America and Russia.

Added Pact CEO John McVay: “UK television content continues to be highly sought-after around the world. The impressive level of year-on-year growth demonstrates that the sector is embracing the challenges of the global marketplace and is adept at exploiting new opportunities. However, with Brexit on the horizon, continued support from the government will be crucial if we are to ensure that UK companies can carry on punching above their weight on the world stage”.

Sky-Discovery carriage dispute a sign of things to come

The eleventh-hour settlement of the high-profile carriage dispute between Sky and Discovery is not likely to be the end of the discussion as to what those channels are really worth.

skyThe deal means that Sky subscribers will continue to enjoy Discovery’s bouquet of 12 thematic genre channels, yet it must be noted that according to Futuresource Consulting analysis, comparing data for the last seven months of 2016 with the same period for 2014 shows that Discovery’s ratings (excluding Eurosport) have declined, while Sky’s share of eyeballs has remained the same. That backs up Sky’s original beef with the programmer.

“The disagreement was simple – Sky said Discovery’s viewing on its platforms had fallen and it did not want to pay what was being asked to renew their long-term carriage agreement,” said Futuresource analyst John Bird. “Discovery said it was being paid less than it was 10 years ago, despite Sky subscription price rises and a claimed 20% increase in viewing of its channels on Sky platforms (the acquisition of Sky Germany and Italy in this period may well be a factor behind this assertion).”

But Bird added that the falling viewership was “almost certainly” due in a large part to the cannibalisation impact of on-demand viewing on traditional linear multichannel TV.

According to the latest survey in the Futuresource international consumer research program Living With Digital, 12% of UK respondents now say that SVOD services are their most frequently viewed video platform, up from 6% a year earlier, compared with 15% for pay-TV channels.

In terms of real numbers, there are now approaching 6 million Netflix and 4 million Amazon Prime Video users in the UK (many taking both).

“As total TV viewing hours are relatively flat, it is inevitable that viewing of these services (as well as other alternative platforms like YouTube) will be taking share from traditional linear TV channels,” Bird explained.

To ward off the impact from defecting viewers, Sky has made more content available on-demand and digitally, with an array of options that include Sky Q, Sky+, Boxed Sets, Sky Store, Sky Go and Sky Now, the latter of which will carry Sky’s full content portfolio online from 2018. Also, Futuresource said that viewing of Sky Atlantic (which carries HBO content) is 75% on-demand.

In the future, Discovery may need to negotiate carriage compensation that takes into account digital statistics within Sky’s various ancillary platforms.

One way that Discovery can make its case is, of course, live sports — an arena that has long been the saviour for programmers looking to up carriage fees. Discovery, whose largest shareholder is John Malone (Liberty), acquired the 49% of Eurosport it did not already own from TF1 in July 2015 for €491 million. It offers exclusive rights to the Australian Open tennis and €1.3 billion for Olympics rights for 2016-2024.

Sky’s appetite for investing in sports content may be sated for a while however: it saw a 70% rise in the price of Premier League rights in the last round as a result of competition from BT Sports. As a result, Sky’s profitability dipped 9% in the last half-year.

“[It] will be looking to keep its results up, especially as it has accepted a takeover bid by 21st Century Fox which values the company at £18.5 billion,” Bird said. “Hence an understandable reluctance to pay more for channels which it claims are being viewed less.”

Nonetheless, enough UK citizens watch Discovery for the potential of a blackout to be concerning, Bird added.

“Although distribution deals with BT and Virgin Media (owned by Liberty Global) remained in place, a blank screen on 10 million+ Sky boxes from 1 February would have left a big hole and it was clearly in the interests of both companies to reach agreement he said.

Movistar+ extends rights on Orange Is The New Black

Telefónica’s pay-TV provider Movistar+ will exclusively premiere the fifth season of Orange is the New Black in Spain.

orange temporada 5In the meantime, the Netflix original series is being launched worldwide by the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform.

As was the case with Game of Thrones and HBO’s streaming service, Movistar+ acquired the rights to Orange is the New Black years before Netflix decided to launch in Spain.

Now, with the SVOD service well settled around the globe, Movistar+ is keeping a grip on the flagship series.

Not many details have been unveiled about the agreement between Telefónica and Netflix, which surprised Netflix’s subscribers last year, when the SVOD platform stated it was not going to have rights over Orange is the New Black’s fourth season.

On 10 June, Movistar Series will premiere the series’ fifth season in Spain. It will screen one episode per week on the linear channel while the whole season will be available through its on-demand service from the beginning.

Netflix has made no announcement yet about when the fifth season will be added in Spain, but so far it has not even included the fourth season, which launched worldwide over half a year ago.

The new season of the Jenji Kohan series will count on most of the cast from previous seasons, including Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, Danielle Brooks and Natasha Lyonne, while new faces such as Brad William Henke, Kelly Karbacz or Jolene Purdy will be added to the cast.
