Solid growth in Q3 but ITV warns of headwinds towards 2017

ITV pic bigThe UK’s leading commercial broadcaster has enjoyed a healthy third quarter of the year, driven by its studios division, but has warned that Brexit uncertainty will apply a brake on profits over the coming months.

For the quarter ended 30 September 2016, ITV reported that total external revenue had risen 5% year-on-year to £2.157 billion, with growth mainly from a 15% increase in non-net advertising revenue (NAR). In particular the key ITV Studios division, which has acted as a driver of growth for the recent past, continued to deliver, with acquisitions taking revenue up 18% on a yearly basis to £923 million. Revenues for the Online, Pay & Interactive division were up 22% with online viewing up 49% and long-form video requests up 22%. By contrast Broadcast & Online revenue inched up 1% to £1.537 billion while ITV Family NAR slipped 1%.

Among the highlights at the Studios division was strong performance across key genres, with scripted programmes such as Victoria, Poldark and The Good Witch all sold to over 100 countries; around 60 formats sold internationally including The Voice, Hell’s Kitchen, Love Island and This Time Next Year. ITV also gained 162 new commissions and 139 recommissions across the business which it said will drive a return to good organic revenue growth in 2017.

Yet the company’s outlook for the rest of 2016 and beyond was rather pessimistic. Even though it was confident of outperforming the TV ad market, ITV Family NAR is forecast to be down around 7% in Q4 and down 3% over the full year. Due to the absence of a major sporting event next year, NPB was predicted to be around £25 million lower than in 2017.

Outlining what could be the challenges ahead, ITV plc to chief executive Adam Crozier said that in recent weeks the political and economic uncertainty has increased and that the company was currently seeing more cautious behaviour by advertisers. He added: Our strong on screen performance and continued ability to deliver mass audiences gives us the confidence that based upon the deals we have done we will also outperform our estimate of the TV ad market in 2017. We remain committed to our strategy of rebalancing and strengthening ITV and building a global content business of scale and we see clear opportunities to continue to invest for further growth across the business both organically and through acquisitions.”

MultiChoice’s latest STB DStv Explora available across African footprint

South Africa’s MultiChoice has now launched its new DStv Explora 2 pay-TV decoder from ARRIS to customers across sub-Saharan Africa

MultiChoiceExplora 2AIt is the fourth generation of HD PVR device that ARRIS and MultiChoice have launched together and is aimed at simplifying access to MultiChoice's on-demand services such as ShowMax.

Based on HEVC technology, the set-top box (STB) will, in the future, reduce the bandwidth needed to stream or download shows, helping to lower customers’ data charges from streaming or downloading content.

The device features a streamlined hard drive and ships with a new remote control that features motion-sensor back-lit buttons and a dedicated ShowMax button.

“We invest in technology that enables us to offer our customers the leap in entertainment at the best value,” said Gerdus van Eeden, Group CTO of the video entertainment unit of MultiChoice’s parent company Naspers.

“We’ve collaborated with ARRIS on our HD PVR decoders for nearly a decade, and we're confident in their ability to deliver advanced technology to make tomorrow's entertainment more accessible today. The DStv Explora 2 will help us to offer our customers a wider range of entertainment which they can stream or download to watch when they are read."

Steve McCaffery, managing director, international sales and business operations, ARRIS, added: “ARRIS and MultiChoice have a long-term partnership, and we’ve built on this by designing another set-top for MultiChoice that uniquely addresses the needs of their customers. Fitting their new HD PVR platform with HEVC was an elegant solution for delivering their full range of HD content.”

Additionally the company’s local presence enabled ARRIS to continue manufacturing the STBs in South Africa, representing “our reciprocal investment in the region,” McCaffery said.

4K-UHD Summit 2016: industry unclear on who pays for the 4K fiesta

The second 4K-UHD Summit in Seville has kicked off, showing not only a local TV industry with a strong commitment to Ultra HD but one asking searching questions as to how demand is monetised.

4k uhd summit 1Maria Jesús Almazor director of southern territories for Telefónica and in charge of the area’s Movistar TV offering, revealed that the Spanish national telco was driving up its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network and that it would pass 16 million homes by the end of the year. This she said would provide a robust and reliable enough base for the most demanding of applications, of which 4KTV was a prime example.

The executive revealed that Movistar would ramp up its Ultra HD offer over the next year, offering not only the required bandwidth within bundles for 4K services but also developing in-house content for millennial users.

“Subscribers demand quality in content. We will develop 4K technology to enrich the user experience,” she said. “We have flexible content consumption.” Movistar, Almazor said, would be 4k uhd summit 2taking the words of its president at heart for Movistar to be ‘house of emotion’ and that its strategy was 4K for everyone. It was planning eight to ten original series a year from 2017, the first of which would be a thriller series set in Seville which will begin shooting before the end of 2016.

Almazor also offered live football as a key 4K use case, noting that the company made its first foray in the area with El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona in November 2015. Yet despite enjoying success, she cautioned that such services needed to be offered at a ‘reasonable’ cost, still a thorny issue within the industry. The key, she said, for Telefónica was bundling. “A significant amount of TV services in Spain [are available] only as part of a bundle. It is clear that telco and media are part of the same business. 4K presents a revenue opportunity for Telefónica. There will be a significant increase in net traffic and [4K will be] a driver for FTTH take-up.”

Yet taking up the cost issue, Cellnex product manager Xavi Redón, argued at the 4K-UHD Summit that advertising needed to support the cost of the broadcaster and that there needs to be, for the user at least, some free TV environment. “Broadcasters should invest in content,” he said. “When it’s reaching the user, the users are demanding more quality and want to have it. Even if you are not broadcasting in 4K, [that is transmitting in HD] you should be producing in 4K because of economies [of scale]. The 4k party needs to start right now and let’s include it wrapped up in distribution.”

North American mobile video traffic set for surge

The amount of mobile video passing over the mobile network continues to increase as consumers watch more streaming content and increasingly adopt other over-the-top (OTT) services, says a study by iGR.

MWC 2The report sees not only growth from traditional TV and film service but also from applications such as Snapchat and WhatsApp, which allow users to embed videos in their messages. The result is that mobile operators are being motivated to update their mobile network with ‘densification’ and other strategies, so that they can continue to deliver a positive video experience to their subscribers.

Furthermore, iGR says that the increasing importance of video has been a key driver for several US mobile operators to make acquisitions or enter into partnership agreements with content providers in order to find new revenue sources to help cover the added investment necessary to guarantee a high performance level of mobile video in their current LTE and future 5G networks.

“Ultimately, mobile operators have two competing goals: provide mobile consumers a consistently positive mobile video experience and lessen the impact of video on the mobile network,” said iGR president and founder Iain Gillott.

Thailand’s Next Step integrates ATEME TITAN in DTH platform

Thai multi-channel operator Next Step has opted for ATEME’s TITAN encoding and transcoding format for its Freeview HD and Good TV free-to-air satellite services.

The infrastructure contract called for ATEME to provide Next Step with a complete video headend, comprising a software-based TITAN Live combined with a multi-function TITAN transcoder, as well as all necessary resources to encode and transcode to H264 and HEVC formats SD and HD content.

The video compression technology allows the encoding and transcoding of more than 40 channels to be delivered direct-to-home (DTH) and offers Next Step the ability to add more channels in a bandwidth efficient way.

“After testing several solutions, the bandwidth efficiency and impressive video quality offered by ATEME’s TITAN made a crucial difference,” says Amornphat Chomrat, managing director, Next Step. “Their solution matched perfectly with our installed equipment and our whole ecosystem. We found TITAN to be the right choice in terms of video quality and rapidly adopted it.”

Yoann Poizeau, VP sales APAC, ATEME added: “We’re thrilled to be working with Next Step on their first major DTH HEVC headend project. They will be able to provide, through satellite distribution, unparalleled video quality at minimum bitrate and rapidly answer the demand for high quality content in the region.”

ABS, Sarana Media Vision to launch FreeViewSat in Indonesia

Satellite operator ABS is to work with PT Sarana Media Vision to launch a free-to-air satellite TV service across Indonesia in January 2017.

SMV FreeViewSat IndonesiaThe service, called SMV FreeViewSat, will initially broadcast about 60 local and international channels across the entire archipelago, via the ABS-2, ABS-2A and ABS-6 satellites in Ku and C band.

The FreeViewSat set-top box and dish cost under US$35, say the companies. Customers will need to make this one-off purchase and then can access all the TV channels on the platform without a monthly subscription fee.

“SMV’s FreeViewSat will be very attractive for Indonesia by providing great quality international and unique domestic programming to the entire country. The goal is to deliver high quality entertainment and educational content affordably to all,” said Tom Choi, CEO of ABS.

“For the first time, everybody, not only the affluent or those in the urban areas, will be able to receive high quality programming for free, with just a one-time purchase of a set-top box and dish. FreeViewSat will also give advertisers the first real opportunity to reach the whole population of Indonesia, even in rural areas. ABS is delighted to be partnering and supporting this worthwhile venture.’’

Confirmed channels for launch include the local: TV9 Nusantara, TVRI Nasional, DAAI TV, TV One, ANTV, Metro TV, Trans 7, Trans TV, SCTV, Indosair, Kompas TV, Net TV, Bali TV.

The international channels represented on the platform include: H2, Bloomberg TV, France 24, Fix and Foxi Channel, Action Hollywood Movies, Pulse TV, Al Jazeera English, CCTV-News, CCTV-4, CCTV-9, Russia Today, MediaCorp Channel, Landscape HD, TRACE Urban and TRACE Sports Stars, B4U Music, B4U Movies, NDTV 247 and NDTV Good Times.

The number of channels will continue to grow to over 100 in the first six to 12 months, said ABS.

FreeViewSat will be available in Indonesia via 75cm Ku band dishes from 75° East on ABS-2 and ABS-2A, and via 1.6m C-band antennas from 159° East on ABS-6, so that consumers can choose between small dishes, or larger ones with increased rain protection.

Since Indonesia already has over ten million C-band antennas installed, ABS expects the adoption rate to be rapid.

ABS has opted for the ABV conditional access and middleware system, along with Ali Corp chips for its set-top boxes.

SES expands slate of US cablecos trialling 4KTV

Four more US cable operators are working with SES to test offering 4K content delivery across the satellite operator’s fully-managed Ultra HD platform.

SES cable UHD 10 NOvSES has struck Ultra HD trial agreements with Marquette-Adams in Wisconsin, Buckeye Broadband in Ohio and Southeast Michigan, Service Electric Cable TV in Pennsylvania, and enTouch Systems in Texas. This means that it now has eight operators currently assessing a satellite-based Ultra HD solution aimed at accelerating 4K delivery to homes across America.

The first wave of trials kicked off this past summer with Cable America in Missouri, Golden West Telecommunications in South Dakota, MTC Cable in New York, and Sjoberg’s Cable TV in Minnesota.

To address the North American market, SES has seven channels hosted aboard two satellites (SES-1, SES-3) at the centre of the orbital arc, serving nearly 100 million homes.

The SES Ultra HD solution uses satellite delivery options with either managed IP multicast DOCSIS 3.0 streams or traditional digital QAM transport streams. With its pre-packaged Ultra HD platform, SES combines Ultra HD channels, 4K set top boxes and reception gear. The managed Ultra HD solution is delivered over dedicated bandwidth, which, says SES, provides a much higher quality viewer experience compared to current Internet-delivered 4K offerings susceptible to buffering and network congestion.

“Ultra HD TV sales and demand for 4K content are both reaching unprecedented levels, and SES is leveraging the scalability and reliability of satellite to accelerate the delivery of Ultra HD to homes throughout North America,” explained Steve Corda, vice president of business development in North America for SES. “SES has developed a fully-managed Ultra HD platform capable of quenching the increasingly insatiable appetite for Ultra HD.”

“Ultra HD is on the verge of becoming an exciting reality for our subscribers, who are buying new Ultra HD TVs in anticipation of the best viewing experience available today,” added Danny White, director of product management, enTouch Systems.

    2016 a banner year for 4K/Ultra HD

Research from the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) in the US has revealed that 4KTV sales are set for 40% annual growth as the Ultra HD ecosystem continues to expand.

RTVev May 2016 HDR 4K Sony TV The CTA data found that shipments of 4K/Ultra TV in the key Q4 selling period are set to reach 4.5 million units, driving total 4KTV sales for the year to ten million units. The key driver for the increased demand is principally the fact that more brands and screen sizes are available at lower prices, complemented with wider availability of new technologies such as high dynamic range (HDR) and wide colour gamut (WCG) which make for better sets.

The CTA added that even as HDR-compatible sets and displays with other new technologies comprise an increasing share of the product mix, the average wholesale price of 4K/Ultra HD TVs has fallen 22% since the beginning of the year.

The CTA forecasts 4K UHD displays will account for 56% of all TV sales during Q4 as the category steadily moves toward comprising nearly half of total annual TV sales. CTA’s annual research also showed that TVs are among the most desired technology gifts during the coming holiday season this year, behind notebook computers and tied with smartphones.

“We’ve been bullish about 4K UHD since day one, and market growth continues to justify our enthusiasm,” said CTA president and CEO Gary Shaprio. “Manufacturers are introducing an increasing variety of 4K UHD displays at a range of price points. Many of these displays include new innovations like HDR and WCG that make the viewing experience more immersive. Strong growth in display sales, combined with the increasing number of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs and other content, 4K cameras, and additional devices in the market will cement 2016 as a ’banner year’ for 4K UHD.”

Despite the healthy growth forecast, the CTA conceded that the total will fall some way short of the 14.5 million units it predicted at the start of the year. It noted that the updated forecast reflects finalised Q2 data showing a more gradual growth curve as TV makers transitioned to new 4K/Ultra HD models.

“We expected to see TV manufacturers move more quickly to a greater mix of 4K in screen sizes above 4”, which now appears to be shaping up as a 2017 trend,” added Steve Koenig, CTA’s senior director, market research. “Growth of the 4K UHD market continues to dwarf the transition to high-definition television. Just three years since introduction, cumulative sales of 4K UHD displays are forecast to hit 18.6 million units, while sales of HDTVs reached 4.2 million units in their first three years on the market.”
