    Ukraine addresses satellite TV hacking

Media Group Ukraine (MGU) is looking into the possibility of broadcasting simultaneously on two satellites in order to counter the outside interference from hackers its channels have suffered this year.
To that effect, it has begun tests on Eutelsat 9B at 9 degrees East.
MGU’s channels, which are distributed by Astra 4A at 4.8 degrees East, suffered unprecedented levels of hacking during Euro 2016, when viewers were deprived of the opportunity to watch the semi-finals.
The company says it has repeatedly asked the police, regulator and security bodies to investigate the situation and take appropriate action. As nothing has been forthcoming, it decided to consider the possibility of simulcasting.
MGU is a media holding company that manages System Capital Management Group’s TV and new media projects. Its assets include the national FTA channel Ukraine; NLO, a channel aimed at young viewers; and the thematic channels Football 1, Football 2 and an HD version of the latter.

    Skylink moves to HD

M7 Group has announced that it will terminate SD distribution of seven leading Czech channels on the DTH platform Skylink on November 14.
Aside from Nova and Prima, they will include five – CT1, CT 2, CT 24, CT Sport and CT/art – operated by the public broadcaster Ceske Televize (CT).
The next step in the process will be the termination of all Slovak public and commercial services on December 31, 2016.
The move follows the securing of new capacity on Astra 3B at 23.5 degrees East that will be used to distribute HD versions of the channels.
Skylink is the leading DTH platform in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Amazon increases Amazon Prime price in Germany

Amazon will charge €69 instead of €49 per year from new Amazon Prime customers in Germany from February 1, 2017.
Existing Amazon Prime customers will pay the old subscription price of €49 for another year if their subscription is due for renewal before July 1, 2017.
A new monthly subscription to Amazon Prime is available for €8.99 per month. A stand-alone subscription to video-on-demand service (VOD) Amazon Video which is included in Amazon Prime remains available for €7.99 per month, the same fee charged by Amazon’s competitors Netflix and maxdome. Watchever costs €8.99 per month. In connection Amazon Prime, the VOD service only costs €5.75 per month, but users are tied to a 1-year subscription.
The reason for the price hike, according to Amazon, is the continuous expansion of the advantages Amazon Prime offers to meet customers’ demands through which the costs for the provision of the service have risen in the past years.
It’s the second price increase since the introduction of Amazon Prime in Germany nine years ago for €29 per year.
Amazon Prime comprises free premium delivery and an entertainment package with over 15,000 movies and series episodes as well as more than 2 million songs.

    Hermansson to leave MTG

After 17 years with MTG, Mathias Hermansson, executive chairman of MTGx and former MTG CFO, has resigned and will leave the company early next year.
However, he will continue to support MTG’s development in 2017 as the advisor to Jørgen Madsen Lindemann, its president and CEO.
Commenting on the development, Lindemann said: “I have really enjoyed working with Mathias. As a professional and as a person, he always sets an outstanding example. He constantly pushes his own boundaries and inspires everyone around him to do the same – exactly the attitude needed to succeed in today’s digital landscape.
“Back in 1999, I’m sure neither Mathias nor I could have imagined MTG investing in leading global digital verticals, but that just reflects the huge impact digitalisation is having on every industry. Mathias has been a key contributor to our ongoing transformation from a traditional broadcaster into a digital video entertainment company. Today, we are developing three digital verticals – esports, multi-platform networks and online gaming – with the potential to power our business in the years ahead.
“Mathias’ contribution, in other words, has been extremely important – both to MTG as it is today and to what we will become tomorrow.
“So from me and all of us at MTG – thank you!”

The Google-backed streaming service has previously supported a number of emerging technologies including from HD and 4K video, live streaming, 3D, 360-degree video, and spatial audio.
It switched on HDR to supporting devices on Monday including the new Chromecast Ultra, as well as Samsung’s 2016 range of SUHD and UHD TVs.

YouTube itself has been working with DaVinci Resolve to simplify the process of uploading HDR video to the site.

Spectral Edge to help TV give you a better night’s sleep

Multiple studies have shown that watching TV or looking at a personal screen such as a laptop or mobile phone before bed disrupts sleep patterns.
The body’s reaction is to reduce the production of melatonin, while resetting the body clock, and making it difficult to sleep.
To combat this Cambridge-based Spectral Edge is launching Nighteq, which is being demonstrated this week at the OTTtv World Summit in London.
“Research demonstrates the impact that evening viewing has on sleep patterns. Nighteq provides operators with a simple way to reduce blue light without impacting picture quality or the overall viewing experience, therefore helping to guarantee a better night’s sleep,” said Christopher Cytera, Managing Director, Spectral Edge. “Alongside our Eyeteq technology for enhancing the experience of colour-blind and colour-deficient viewers, it demonstrates the opportunities that video personalisation offers to operators who want to improve the service they offer to their subscribers and to reach out to new ones.”
Nighteq and Eyeteq are the first two products based on Spectral Edge’s Phusion image enhancement technology, developed by Spectral Edge following its spin-off from the University of East Anglia.
“Delivering the best possible user experience is central to consumers watching – and paying for – content on their TVs, tablets and PCs,” said Professor Jonathan Freeman, Professor of Psychology & Managing Director, i2 Media Research. “Operators should therefore look to focus on their user experience, collecting empirical evidence from test groups of consumers and using this feedback to improve and enhance the services that they offer.”
Spectral Edge Phusion technology enhances images and video by using information outside the normal visible spectrum or applying transformations to that within it.

Film and series make up 61% of all pay on demand in Europe

Films and TV fiction are clearly the main driver for on-demand services, according to figures from the European Audiovisual Observatory.
The European Audiovisual Observatory’s MAVISE Database has just undergone a major overhaul with TV and VoD data in 37 countries being completely up-dated, and the figures below are from the database, which is now current up to October 2016. The freely available data can be accessed here.
Pay on demand services specialised in film and TV fiction account for two-thirds of all pay-on demand services in Europe, compared with only 14% of TV channels.

The breakdown of pay on-demand services established in Europe by genre shows that 61% of all on-demand services offer movies and TV series, 12% is generalist, 9% adult, 6% children’s programming and the remaining 12% other types of programming.
These figures are taken from MAVISE – the European Audiovisual Observatory’s free access TV and VoD database. This newly revamped database includes free profile data on TV channels and on-demand services in 41 European countries plus Morocco.

A breakdown of the main pay on-demand services active in Europe by distribution shows that over 60% of the 723 main pay-on demand services established and active in Europe identified by the Observatory are available online, whereas almost 40% are operated by the main TV distributors on their managed networks. Among the pay-on demand services, transactional services (TVOD) – 416 – outnumber subscription services (SVOD) – 307.

The breakdown of TV channels established in Europe by genre shows that among thematic channels, Fiction, Sport, Entertainment are the most prevailing genres. Only 9% of the 5 462 international and national TV channels established in Europe are generalist.

The share of international and national channels established in Europe available on DTT by genre shows that about 22% of international and national TV channels established in Europe are available in Digital Terrestrial Television (free or pay) in at least one country in Europe. Generalist channels access more easily to DTT: close to 46% of generalist channels established in Europe are available on DTT.
