Channel 5 delivers record operating profit of £58.4MN

Viacom’s 2014 takeover of Channel 5 now appears to be paying off as the UK’s fifth largest broadcaster has posted its first consecutive years of profitability in its near 20-year history.

For the financial year ended 30 September 2016, the company recorded an operating profit of £58.4 million against £14.9 million for the previous financial year. Turnover, which derives largely from advertising revenues, increased 19% year-on-year to £383.6 million compared with £322.7 million in 2015. Channel 5 Broadcasting retained a profit after tax and extraordinary items of £42.3 million against £36.5 million in the previous financial year.

Looking at the key drivers in the year for what Channel 5 is calling its new state of being sustainably profitable, the company said that turnover benefited from a strong ratings performance relative to its main free-to-air competitors. It claimed that for the second financial year running, its family of channels was the only terrestrial portfolio to grow its share of total TV viewing in the UK in the year to 30 September 2016, gaining 2% to record a 6.13% share.

Strong portfolio growth was seen amongst younger audiences with a 9% increase in share of viewing amongst 16-34-year-olds. This was said to be reflected by the performance of its 5Star channel, which had its best ever year with young audiences (up 32% year-on-year), and Spike in its first full year on air. Channel 5’s content was also more popular among online viewers via its rebranded My5 player, which delivered an 18% year-on-year increase in streams during the financial year. A My5 linear TV channel was also launched in August 2016, replacing time-shifted network Channel 5 +24.

The company noted that even in a year of high-profile televised sporting events, including The Olympics, Paralympics and UEFA Euro 2016, which it did not have rights to show, its ratings uplift was driven by an increase in content spend of 11% during the financial year. This investment, it said, helped accelerate an ongoing creative overhaul of schedules with more than 40 new, original series launching in peak time during the financial year. Two-thirds of Channel 5’s programme hours, excluding advertising, are forecast to be UK originated in 2016, compared to a half in 2013.

Commenting on the results, David Lynn, president, UK, Northern and Eastern Europe, for Channel 5’s parent company, Viacom International Media Networks, said: “Channel 5 is radically different to the network Viacom first looked at buying three years ago; it has an entirely new look and just seven shows still broadcasting that were on air in 2013. This transformation has taken place under American ownership but it is being driven by original British content. We’ve transformed the business model, through our advertising partnership with Sky Media and by getting Channel 5 to work more closely with our pay-TV channels, making it sustainably profitable for the first time, in spite of recent economic uncertainty.”

SES: NATO ground surveillance contract awarded to GovSat

SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that its Luxembourgish 50% affiliate GovSat has secured a long term commercial satellite communications contract to support the operational phase of NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS). The contract is for an end-to-end service and includes the delivery of satellite capacity in commercial Ku-band - largely coming from the SES fleet - as well as associated capacity management services. These services support the command & control and sensor data communications required by NATO Global Hawk vehicles over the AGS operational area.

GovSat is a public-private partnership between the Luxembourg Government and SES. It offers capacity leases and related 24/7 secure operations from facilities with EU and NATO clearances to governments and institutions. Its first satellite, GovSat-1, is currently under construction and scheduled for launch in 2017.

The AGS system consists of air, ground and support elements performing all-weather, persistent wide-area terrestrial and maritime surveillance in near real-time. AGS will be able to contribute to a range of missions such as protection of ground troops and civilian populations, border control and maritime safety, the fight against terrorism, crisis management and humanitarian assistance in areas affected by natural disasters.

“The award of this contract confirms the unique capability of GovSat to address the secure communication requirements of a NATO defence program, including the handling of sensitive and classified material,” said Patrick Biewer, CEO of GovSat. “GovSat is now de-facto operational, well ahead of the GovSat-1 satellite launch which is foreseen for next year.”

SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) provides breakthrough connectivity solutions to governments and institutions. These organisations rely on connectivity for their increasingly data hungry applications, a need that SES is supplying. SES services are reliable, innovative, secure, high-quality, cost-effective, and customised. These six characteristics are described in detail inside the new SES White Paper, “SES Charts Rising Government Needs”.
“In a sector where each situation requires different methods and technology,” the White Paper states, “SES tailors its offering to provide the crucial support needed for the important projects of governments and institutions, both regionally and internationally.”

“SES is at the epicentre of a suite of companies that take a global approach for product development and customer service,” the White Paper explains, “forming a powerful collection of capacity, services, and solutions for the government and institutional sector.”

“Together, the unique capabilities of SES detailed above make it distinct in the government and institutional arena,” the White Paper concludes, “where it is not only responding to government needs but shaping the future of demand with services that go beyond capacity, and innovations that redefine possibility.”

E! Entertainment searches for South African host

E! Entertainment Television is to locally produce a six-part reality series to find the first host for the channel from South Africa.

The Search: E! Host South Africa is scheduled to launch on sub-Saharan pay-TV platform DStv in February.

“E! Entertainment Television continues to invest into original programming and, with The Search: E! Host South Africa about to begin production, we are delighted to be showcasing local talent,” said Colin McLeod, managing director, UK and emerging markets, NBCUniversal International Networks.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for up-and-coming talent from across the country to pursue this unique opportunity to become a pop culture ambassador on E! in Africa.”

Contestants will live together in a luxury mansion and have to complete weekly challenges for the duration of their time on the programme. Each week, a panel of judges will eliminate one contestant until the winner is declared.

New wave of cable operators initiate Ultra HD trials with SES

SES S.A. (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) today announced that four more US cable operators are testing 4K content delivery across SES’s fully-managed Ultra HD platform, in advance of breakthrough Ultra HD subscriber trials set to begin later this year.

SES has struck new Ultra HD trial agreements with Marquette-Adams in Wisconsin, Buckeye Broadband in Ohio and Southeast Michigan, Service Electric Cable TV in Pennsylvania, and enTouch Systems in Texas, and now has eight operators currently assessing the satellite-based UHD solution aimed at accelerating 4K delivery to homes across America. The first wave of trials kicked off this past summer with Cable America in Missouri, Golden West Telecommunications in South Dakota, MTC Cable in New York, and Sjoberg’s Cable TV in Minnesota.

The SES Ultra HD solution leverages the scalability of satellite and delivery options, using either managed IP multicast DOCSIS 3.0 streams (versus over-the-top Internet connections) or traditional digital QAM transport streams. With its pre-packaged Ultra HD platform, SES combines Ultra HD channels, 4K set top boxes and reception gear in a cost-effective service, which is enabling small and medium tier cable operators to be among the first in North America to provide linear and live Ultra HD to subscriber homes. SES’s managed Ultra HD solution is delivered over dedicated bandwidth, providing a much higher quality viewer experience compared to current Internet-delivered 4K offerings susceptible to buffering and network congestion.

SES is not only fast-tracking Ultra HD home delivery. The world’s leading satellite operator also has the largest global Ultra HD channel line-up, with 30 Ultra HD channels worldwide. These include seven channels hosted aboard two SES satellites (SES-1, SES-3) at the centre of the orbital arc, serving nearly 100 million homes across North America.

“Cable operators participating in the trials have been impressed with how easy it is to implement Ultra HD across their networks with SES’s pre-packaged solution. Ultra HD TV sales and demand for 4K content are both reaching unprecedented levels, and SES is leveraging the scalability and reliability of satellite to accelerate the delivery of Ultra HD to homes throughout North America,” explained Steve Corda, Vice President of Business Development in North America for SES. “SES has developed a fully-managed Ultra HD platform capable of quenching the increasingly insatiable appetite for Ultra HD. We are the leader in Ultra HD across North America and the world with the largest bouquet of UHD programming, and our UHD multiplex and neighbourhood has become the UHD destination of choice.”

“Ultra HD is on the verge of becoming an exciting reality for our subscribers, who are buying new Ultra HD TVs in anticipation of the best viewing experience available today,” noted Danny White, Director of Product Management, enTouch Systems. “enTouch is well positioned to provide game-changing 4K content quickly and cost effectively to our customers across the Greater Houston area, thanks to our collaboration with SES and its breakthrough Ultra HD solution.”

“We will soon be testing a great mix of 4K movies, cutting-edge TV shows, news and sporting event coverage from SES’s growing, satellite-based Ultra HD platform, with plans to deliver Ultra HD to subscriber homes on the horizon,” said Brad Mefferd, Chief Administrative Officer, Buckeye Broadband. “The fact that the SES solution works over existing, high-capacity DOCSIS 3.0 cable networks and traditional digital QAM will enable us to be flexible in how we distribute Ultra HD content in our markets.”

“Ultra HD has arrived in Wisconsin and we’re just days away from delivering compelling 4K content to our subscriber homes,” said Shane McCann, Network Engineer for Marquette- Adams. “SES’s innovative and simplified platform solution has really allowed us to leap ahead to reliable and scalable technologies that have made the transition to Ultra HD much faster and more efficient.”

Tata Communications and Constantin Medien create media hub in Germany

Indian telecommunications provider Tata Communications and German media company Constantin Medien have joined forces to create a new media hub in Germany.
The platform will offer content delivery, management, storage and computing services for businesses in media, sports, gaming and music industries across German-speaking countries in Europe.
The deal enables Tata Communications to target media customers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria by using Constantin Medien as its preferred channel to these markets and to offer Constantin Medien’s full service portfolio to its media customers around the world through the new media hub, opening up new revenue opportunities through global content contribution and distribution. In addition, Constantin Medien has chosen Tata Communications as its preferred provider for network and cloud infrastructure solutions.
Content by customers of Plazamedia, Constantin Medien’s production subsidiary, will be distributed from the media hub using Tata Communications’ video connect network which allows the delivery of live video feeds from anywhere in the world over its wholly-owned subsea fibre network, delivering connectivity to over 240 countries and territories.
To facilitate the management of increasing volumes of content for media companies, the new media hub will use Tata Communications’ Izo Private Cloud and Izo Cloud Storage services. Plazamedia will also resell these cloud infrastructure, compute and storage services to its customers. To ensure data sovereignty, Tata Communications will deploy a new Izo Private Cloud node in Munich. Additionally, Tata Communications will build a new connectivity hub in Plazamedia’s data centre in Ismaning near Munich.

    DVB-T2 benefits continue in Slovakia

The Slovak pay-DTT platform Plustelka has added a HD version of the national commercial channel Joj to its offer.
Joj HD is broadcast from the fourth national multiplex and is part of the encrypted standard Plustelka package, the cost of which remains unchanged.
Meanwhile, the SD version of Joj has been retained on the second multiplex.
The addition of Joj HD has been made possible by the fourth multiplex’s switch to the DVB-T2 standard in September and it joins a growing list of HD channels on the multiplex including Joj Cinema, along with services operated by the public broadcaster RTVS.
Meanwhile, new Plustelka customers are being offered a €30 discount on the purchase price of the DVB-T2 Plustelka Alma set-top box.
Slovakia’s DTT platform is operated by the national transmission company Towercom.
