    Tricolor TV a “multiplatform”

Russia’s leading pay-TV operator Tricolor TV has declared itself to now be a multiplatform.
On November 1, it launched a new VOD service named kino.tricolor.tv. A proprietary web-based platform available on fixed and mobile devices, it offers content, all of which is in HD, from both Tricolor TV and its partners, who already include Tvigle, Tvzavr and Amedia TV.
Tricolor TV’s second online resource is tricolortvmag.ru, which provides viewers and internet users with updates on TV, cinema, fashio, sports and digital technologies.
Launched in late 2015, it had 2,867,614 unique users as of October 19 this year. Its daily traffic in October reached 22 million unique visits and from this month it will have a mobile version.
Tricolor TV’s third multiplatform area sees it developing ways for viewers to watch TV on mobile devices within their own homes.

Tricolor TV joins Russian satellite TV operators’ move to OTT

Russian pay TV operator Tricolor TV has launched its first multiscreen non-linear offering, Kino Tricolor TV.

The pay TV operator has struck deals with online video services Tvigle and Tvzavr, and broadcaster and OTT video service provider Amedia to provide content for the service.

All movies abnd TV series on Kino Tricolor TV are in HD and the service can be accessed by fixed and mobile devices connected to the web.

Tricolor had previously launched an online portal with information about TV, cinema, fashion, sport and digital technologies. The portal, Tricolortvmag.ru, was launched late last year and has recorded 2.9 million unique visitors to date. The group has nw launched a mobile version of this service with a dedicated app for iOS and Android devices, including the ability to view content offline.

CEO Alexey Kholodov said that Tricolor TV could no longer be viewed just as a satellite TV company but as a provider of entertainment and information services across all digital media.

Tricolor’s move is part of a drive by all three leading Russian satellite pay TV operators to expand their services to embrace non-linear and multiscreen OTT distribution.

NTV+ last week launched an online movie service, with about 100 titles available at launch.

Orion Express CEO Kirill Makhno has meanwhile told Russian press that his company would launch an online movie service before the end of this year. Makhno said that Orion was already testing the service and would launch with a partner rather than negotiate rights deals directly.

    Virgin Media launches 4G mobile

Virgin Media is launching its 4G mobile service with the offer of free messaging on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
The UK cablenet becomes the last of the UK’s major mobile operators to launch a 4G service, though Sky has announced it will enter the market early in 2017.
As a MNVO Virgin will use the network of BT-owned EE.
Peter Kelly, Managing Director of Mobile at Virgin Media, said: “Virgin Media’s new mobile plans are fast, flexible and filled with data. By offering free messaging on WhatsApp and Messenger we’re making sure that Virgin Media customers never have to worry about messaging friends or family and if there’s data left over at the end of the month then we’ve got that covered too. With 4G our customers have a quicker way to browse, message, stream and play wherever they are.”
Virgin has also introduced a ‘Data Rollover’ into its new plans, allowing customers to transfer any unused data from one month to the next. Customers will receive a text when data is being rolled over and another text when all the leftover data has been used.
Virgin’s 4G mobile plans start at £6 per month for a 30-day rolling contract with 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 300MB of data, up to £25 per month for a contract with 5000 minutes, unlimited texts and 20GB of data.
All Virgin Media 4G plans are available as either ‘Freestyle’ or SIM-only contracts. Freestyle contracts split the plan and handset elements of a contract over a 24 month period to give Virgin Media customers the ability to pay the handset element off early to upgrade to a new phone.
Customers will also be able to take advantage of 250,000 WiFi hotspots around the country following its acquis iton of the Arqiva Wi-Fi network, as well as 250 stations on the London Underground.

    Vimeo to launch SVOD service

Vimeo will launch its own standalone subscription service that will bundle premium programming into a paid product, wrote IAC CEO and interim Vimeo CEO Joey Levin in a letter to investors.
“Vimeo has the potential to be one of the biggest and most disruptive opportunities we’ve seen at IAC,” said Levin in the letter, “Vimeo has the once-in-a-generation opportunity to, following in Netflix’s footsteps, deliver compelling subscription viewing experiences for consumers in the market for pay TV. [IAC owns Vimeo and is a media and internet company with more than 150 brands and products]
“The main differentiator between us and others at play in this new OTT market is that unlike all others who have to start from scratch, we begin with over a billion monthly video views, 115 million videos available, 240 million monthly viewers?—?over 100 million of whom are on Vimeo properties, 24 million of whom watch three or more videos on Vimeo per month, and millions of whom have already purchased content on the Vimeo platform from a Vimeo creator. Not bad for approximately $65 million aggregate investment into Vimeo, the vast majority of which built the SaaS business.”
The announcement follows the launch of the download-to-own TV store by Vimeo, offering content from Lionsgate and Starz.
