Sky in frame for Italian mobile assets

Sky Italia has been named as one of the companies in talks with VimpelCom and Hutchison in an asset sale designed to head off regulatory concerns.

The two want to merge their mobile operations but plan to sell off part of their network. According to Bloomberg, talks with Sky, the French Iliad and other groups would help create a new mobile network, but are still at an early stage.

Sky has also been cited as a Kingmaker in any sale of O2 by Telefonica; earlier this month a purchase by Three was blocked by the EU.

VimpelCom’s Wind and 3 Italia have a block of redundant frequencies and 5,000 wireless masts to sell to placate the European Union ahead of a formal objection.

The merger would create the largest operator in Italy, measured by customers.

This partnership will offer a unified bouquet of free-to-air (FTA) and free-to-view (FTV) channels, from all over West Africa, as well as some popular international channels, to millions of viewers in the region.

The partnership will ensure that consumers, especially in Ghana where 98% SES Satellite Monitor Survey Results for Ghana year-end 2014 of satellite households are serviced by SES satellites, receive newer and higher quality viewing formats and also have access to connected services when they become available.

Wilfried Urner, CEO of SES Platform Services, said, “We are proud to be K-NET’s partner of choice. We are at the forefront of the provision of FTA and FTV channels in the sub region and driving further DTH penetration in various West African countries. The partnership will further accelerate the globalisation of SES’s video business, increase our channel growth and establish us as a world-leading next generation video and media service provider.”

Richard Hlomador, Chairman of K-Net added, “We have worked with SES since 2001 and are pleased to be able to extend our partnership with SES Platform Services. We have built a robust DTH platform, and delivering content in consistently high-quality is a top priority for us. This makes SES Platform Services the ideal partner of choice.”

    MTG receives Russian sale funds

completed the sale of its 38% stake in the Russian national commercial broadcaster CTC Media.

In a statement, it says it received a total of $123 million, equivalent to SEK1,023 million, for the stake and no longer has any interest in CTC Media or its operations.

It adds that the transaction will result in a negative non-cash impact of SEK1,002 million in the ‘net income from discontinued operations’ line of its Q2 results. This will be largely down to accumulated currency translation differences, along with the adjustment to the fair value of the hodling compared to the balance sheet as of March 31.

MTG also says that the cash proceeds of the transaction will be used to reduce the company’s borrowings and fund development of its digital video entertainment business.

Tunisia’s OTN brings new FTA platform to Eutelsat

The Tunisian broadcasting corporation (ONT) has signed a multi-year contract with Eutelsat Communications to broadcast its new subscription-free TV platform across North and West Africa.

ONT has selected the Eutelsat 7 West A satellite to reach viewers across the region.

The ONT is consolidating around ten Tunisian channels in a single package at 7/8 degrees West, North Africa’s leading satellite broadcasting neighbourhood. Eutelsat 7 West A’s footprint also enables the ONT to extend reach to West Africa. Homes equipped with a satellite dish pointing to 7/8 degrees West will be able to enjoy improved image quality and easier navigation of the channels in the platform.

Nôomên Elfehri, Tunisia’s Minister of Communication Technologies and Digital Economy, stated: “The launch of this national project is a vehicle for Tunisia’s sovereignty in the field of broadcasting. Viewers will be able to enjoy a diversified and quality line-up of Tunisian content.”

Dhaker Baccouch, Chairman and CEO of the ONT, added: “In selecting the Eutelsat 7 West A satellite, we are providing viewers with improved image quality and we are equipped to scale up our new platform with further channels.”

Michel Azibert, Eutelsat’s Chief Commercial and Development Officer, concluded: “With this new contract the ONT is strengthening its portfolio of capacity on Eutelsat, adding to resources already leased on three of our satellites, Eutelsat 12 West B, Hot Bird and Eutelsat 36B, for newsgathering and broadcasting to the general public.”

TV4 Play to require user login

TV4 is to ask users of its catch-up TV service to sign in before viewing content.

The Swedish commercial channel is looking to better commercialise TV4 Play by offering targeted advertising.

“By ensuring that advertising is more suited to individuals, we can offer better targeted products to advertisers. We will be able to sell audiences based on first-hand data and advertisers will also be able to purchase video content from an area that is open and transparent,” Mathias Berg, Chief Operating Officer, TV4 Group told Dagens Media.

Viewers will benefit from being able to pause content on one device and pick up on another.

It’s a functionality that is being introduced on many on demand services, including the UK’s Channel 4 that picked up 10 million registrants three years after including the option.

Smart TV online usage grows in Russia

undertaken by Ipsos Comcon this March, Comnews reports that the figure stands at 38%, or seven percentage points more than a year earlier.

This made smart TVs the fastest growing category of devices used to access the internet in Russia, ahead of tablets, which were used by 63% and grew by five percentage points over the year.

Smartphones, the most popular, were used by 91%, up three percentage points.

Smart TV users invariably access content, including popular TV channels, online cinema and services such as YouTube, via widgets, according to a representative of Ipsos Comcon.

They also learn about their TVs’ multimedia capabilities gradually.

GfK says that smart TVs accounted for 37% of set sales in the first quarter, down from 39.6% in the same period last year.

Sales were particularly strong in 2013-14, when viewers were less price conscious than they are today.

Furthermore, over 80% used streaming services and a third programmes from torrents.

The news follows yesterday’s announcement of the Virtual Reality coverage of French Open by France Télévisions.

    Vodafone reveals Romanian TV strategy

Vodafone Romania has ruled out launching a DTH platform in the country.

Quoted by ZF, its CEO Ravinder Takker questioned the value of such a service and the synergies it would bring, with the company instead wanting “to do something more interesting and relevant”.

However, without providing any further details, he also said that Vodafone would make a number of moves in the content sector this year.

He also refused to confirm or deny that it could launch TV services via a mobile app, adding that it was instead focused on satisfying customers’ growing appetite for video content accessed on mobile devices.

While not specifying an amount, Takker in addition said that Vodafone Romania will make huge investments in the country.

It is known to have already invested €35 million in Project Spring.

Sky Deutschland moves Astra uplink to Sky Italia

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland will commence the relocation of the playout and uplink for its transponders on the Astra satellite system (19.2 degrees East) from Munich to Milan today.
The move will take place in the night from November 7 to November 8, 2016 and from November 8 to November 9, 2016, between midnight and 04.00 CET, a Sky Deutschland spokesman confirmed to Broadband TV News.
This will lead to DTH satellite households and customers of cable networks served by Astra temporarily not being able to receive several Sky Deutschland channels. When the relocation is completed, the channels will become available again. No action is required on the subscribers’ side, the Sky spokesman stressed.
Sky Deutschland confirmed to Broadband TV News in February 2016 its decision to move its playout and uplink from SES Platform Services (now called MX1 following the merger with RR Media) in Unterföhring near Munich to Sky Italia’s teleport in Milan to “efficiently make use of the infrastructure within the Sky group”.
The insourcing is part of the UK-based parent group’s strategy to increasingly streamline the operations of Sky UK, Sky Deutschland and Sky Italia across content, technology and logistics since their combination into a Europe-wide pay-TV company to benefit from synergies and cost-savings. Sky UK and Sky Italia are already using their own uplink and playout facilities, making the move to take the German operations in-house from a third-party service provider a logical step.
