Battle for Viacom escalates with Dauman suit

    Michelle Clancy | 24 May 2016

The power struggle for control of Viacom has escalated with CEO Philippe Dauman and director George Abrams suing over their unexpected removal from the trust that will control the firm when 93-year-old Sumner Redstone dies.

sumner redstoneThe trust controls Redstone’s company National Amusements, which owns 80% of both Viacom and CBS. Redstone has named a current National Amusements executive, general counsel Ted Jankowski, and family friend Jill Krutick as their replacements.

In the complaint, Dauman called his removal “illegal” and alleged that Redstone is being manipulated by his daughter, Shari Redstone.

The move had been made “to accomplish her [Shari Redstone’s] long-held goal, which Mr Redstone has always opposed, of gaining control of National Amusements and Viacom”.

But Viacom is in trouble: it has lost more than a third of its stock value in the last 12 months, and Dauman has been shopping Paramount Pictures — a move Redstone is said to oppose.

The bad blood is a recent development. “Sumner and I have a more than 30-year history, side by side, building his media empire,” Dauman said in an earnings call in February. “He and the board of Viacom, believing in my ability and my character, have entrusted me with weighty responsibilities, none of which are inconsistent or incompatible.”

In a statement, Redstone said he “regrets that Mr Dauman has diverted resources to these baseless attacks and misrepresentations, rather than focusing on the continuing challenges that are faced by Viacom. Mr Redstone will continue to act in what he believes are the best interests of Viacom’s shareholders”.

Playboy announces first original streaming video push

    Michelle Clancy | 24 May 2016

Following the launch of a revamped website and momentum surrounding its recently redesigned magazine, Playboy has introduced a mix of original digital video offerings.

playboyDebuting this summer on Playboy.com will be the company’s first foray into streaming video, with the 63-year old iconic Playboy brand focusing on a comprehensive 360° vision for ‘the good life’ – a blueprint on everything from entertainment and travel, to food and drinks, to nightlife and style, to gaming and technology, to humour – and, of course, sex. The new magazine format has eliminated nudes (starting with this year’s Kate Moss cover), but no word on if the videos will follow suit.

“For decades, Playboy has been a platform for expression and creativity – a catalyst for progress,” said Scott Flanders, CEO, Playboy Enterprises. “We've often been an advocate and an activist – a proponent of individual freedom. We have always pushed the boundaries of imagination, we're an aspirational brand and have been a vanguard for exploration, all the while giving a voice to provocative opinions. Now, with the debut of our original video slate, we're continuing to usher in a new era of Playboy. And we're just getting started.”

Playboy has also announced the formation of Playboy Studios, the company's in-house branded content studio, which will be headed up by Playboy magazine's deputy editor and resident style expert, Hugh Garvey.

Nothing has been more exciting than leading this content transformation at Playboy,” said Cory Jones, chief content officer, Playboy Enterprises. "The slate of original video programming we have introduced reflects our authoritative voice, advising and entertaining men. We have never had a bigger audience at Playboy and we are all very eager to introduce them to this incredible collection of new franchises.”

Playboy's chief digital officer, Phillip Morelock, added, “As a top ten social media publisher, Playboy is one of the most digitally engaged media brands available to advertisers. The introduction of this ambitious slate of original video programming and the formation of Playboy Studios are the next steps in building a comprehensive platform for advertisers that enables them to tap directly into the lives of young, ambitious men and women – wherever and however they consume our content.”

Streaming Video Alliance releases open caching requirements

    Michelle Clancy | 24 May 2016

The Streaming Video Alliance (SVA) has publicly released the Open Caching Systems Functional Requirements and QoE Industry Guidelines.

svaThe guidelines have been approved unanimously by SVA members and are the culmination of extensive collaboration and input from the SVA Open Caching and Quality of Experience (QoE) Working Groups.

The requirements and guidelines help define new industry architectures and contribute to building best practices across the streaming video ecosystem. Over the last 18 months, members of the Open Caching Working Group have been focused on producing a clear set of functional requirements for open caching technologies.

“The Open Caching Functional Requirements mark a significant step towards helping network operators optimise network utilisation and quality of experience while helping the ecosystem as a whole improve the delivery of streaming video," said Jason Hofmann, VP of architecture, Limelight Networks. "As we continue to collaborate as a group, we plan to develop a comprehensive library of best practices and standards for open caching that will accelerate adoption worldwide.”

Using a similar collaborative approach, the SVA QoE Working Group has spent the past year working toward development of guidelines.

“In order to align the industry on the definition, measurement, reporting and optimisation of streaming quality, the QoE Working Group is taking the initiative to ensure all members of the end-to-end value chain are in agreement on terms and metrics for streaming video quality,” said Thomas Edwards, VP of engineering and development at FOX Networks Engineering and Operations. "The QoE Guidelines are the first step in the process – allowing members to focus on future deliverables that allow streaming video to continue scaling to millions of viewers without sacrificing video quality.”

Over 40 companies across the streaming video ecosystem are members of the Alliance. At today's meeting, the SVA welcomed several new members, including MediaMelon, Nagra, Nice People at Work and System73.

The Streaming Video Alliance allows us to have a direct impact on the evolution of OTT and streaming video," said Ferran Gutiérrez, CEO & co-founder at Nice People At Work (NPAW). "NPAW is dedicated to providing the online media industry with the business intelligence technology to ensure that consumers receive the highest quality video during their streaming experience. We look forward to using our unique insights into this data to collaborate across the industry and shape the future of TV consumption across the globe."

Userful raises the bar for 4K video walls to 8K

    Editor | 24 May 2016

After launching the first video wall controller to deliver 4K source content over the network in real time, Userful has increased its scalability with support for 8K source content.

300dpi videocontrollertextThe centralised display controller firm’s Userful v8.6, software is designed to turn a standard PC into a video wall controller capable of supporting 60fps video as well as up to 8K video to one or more video walls over the network in real time.

The new release has big scalability improvements that have improved video wall synchronisation and enable the solution to support up to three simultaneous 4K streams in real time from a single PC each delivered to a different video wall over a standard Ethernet network. Userful believes that its solution is unique in its ability to support both large video walls and large content over the network from just one computer.

“Userful v8.6 pushes the boundaries of what a video wall solution is capable of, but more importantly, by staying affordable, users can now have even more stunning video walls and not break the bank,” claimed Userful founder and CTO Timothy Griffin. “This is still the simple and flexible solution that’s made it so popular, but the new release offers a big jump in scalability by supporting more displays and larger content. It enables very large multi-source video walls to be deployed with simplicity at a cost effective price point.”

Swisscom fined for abuse of position in sports broadcasting

    Editor | 24 May 2016

In a stinging rebuke, Switzerland’s Competition Commission (COMCO) has imposed a sanction of CHF71.8 million on Swisscom and Cinetrade/Teleclub due to alleged prohibited marketing of sports content via pay-TV.

Swisscom 14 April 20162016 had begun well for the Swiss IPTV company but COMCO believes that Swisscom and Cinetrade/Teleclub occupy a dominant market position, particularly with respect to the broadcasting of national football and ice hockey events. It ordered that the two must offer all TV platforms in Switzerland – if technically feasible – an equivalent Teleclub sport offering at non-discriminatory terms and conditions. In July 2015, the COMCO Secretariat had petitioned the Competition Commission to impose a sanction of CHF143 million.

Swisscom and Cinetrade/Teleclub have always denied the allegations and maintain that the sanction is unjustified. They add that they are confident that confident that they acted lawfully in the marketing of sports content.

They say that as in other countries, broadcasting rights for sports programmes are granted periodically as part of an open process in which other interested parties, such as cable providers, can also participate. Swisscom stressed that these high levels of investment make sports broadcasts attractive for pay-TV and justify an expanded sports offering via the Swisscom TV platform. This, says Swisscom, is the only way in which the investments can be sufficiently protected.

Following the judgement, Swisscom said that it will carefully review the more than 200-page decree and that given the very high fine and the decision’s fundamental character, an appeal will be lodged with the Federal Administrative Court and, if necessary, the Federal Supreme Court. Swisscom regards its chances in the appeal procedure as intact and, based on its current assessment, is therefore not setting aside any provisions.

    Michelle Clancy | 24 May 2016

Netflix kidsAiming to accelerate its push in to cinema, Netflix has released its summer movie slate, including its second original film from Adam Sandler.

the do overThe subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) firm’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that Netflix sees about a 20% increase in movie watching by members in the US around Memorial Day weekend. Just in time for the holiday, the streaming giant is releasing Sandler’s new movie, starring Sandler and David Spade as old friends who reunite at their 25th high school reunion for the ultimate mulligan: wiping the slate clean by faking their deaths.

“Many of our long time US members might recognise that summer is a time when we refresh a large part of our film catalogue,” said Sarandos. “This year is no exception, but there is one difference; a batch of non-exclusive titles are leaving while what is arriving is exclusive to Netflix among streaming subscription video services.”

June will offer sci-fi adventure classics Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Jurassic Park 3; Academy Award Best Picture winner Spotlight; Sundance hit and Netflix Original film The Fundamentals of Caring, which follows Paul Rudd playing Ben, a writer-turned-caregiver, and his charge, a foul-mouthed British teen with muscular dystrophy played by Craig Roberts, as they take an impromptu road trip.

July will feature the Big Short with Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale, which brings to life the collapse of the US mortgage bubble; Brahman Naman, another Netflix Original film, which brings the ribaldry of American Pie and takes it to India in the 1980s; and Tallulah, another Sundance breakout and Netflix Original, which unites Allison Janney and Ellen Page in the story of a dissatisfied Beverly Hills housewife and the babysitter she hires. Also arriving in July for the first time are classic family franchises Back to The Future and Lethal Weapon.

In August, Netflix will premiere The Little Prince, an animated film based on the beloved children’s book, along with The Fast & The Furious, The Wedding Planner and St Vincent.

From September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar. Netflix Original movies will also debut, including Mascots, from Christopher Guest, and War Machine, from acclaimed Australian director David Michod and starring Brad Pitt, in the serio-comic tale of the US military adventure in Afghanistan.

    Slovakia set for DVB-T2 move

Slovakia’s fourth DTT multiplex will start the switch to DVB-T2 on June 28.

Speaking to Zive, Zsolt Nagy, the technical director of the national transmission company Towercom, said that viewers would begin to see changes on their screens from the beginning of September.

The fourth multiplex carries the pay-DTT service Plustelka and Nagy added that none of its channels were likely to be dropped following the transition.

Indeed, new ones, some in HD, may be added as the multiplex’s capacity is increased from 22 Mbps to 36 Mbps.

Nagy also said that as most viewers will have to replace their set-top boxes to continue receiving Plustelka, Towercom has prepared a special offer providing one at a discounted price.

The fourth multiplex currently covers around 80% of Slovakia and Nagy also said he expected to cost of receiving the basic Plustelka package to remain unchanged at €5.99 a month.

There are at present no plans to move the country’s other multiplexes to DVB-T2.

Significantly, Markiza TV, Slovakia’s leading broadcaster, has a DVB-T distribution contract valid until the end of this year. At this stage it remains to be seen if it will be extended.

Only around 10% of Slovak households use DTT as the their main source of TV reception.
