Electric Friends, Ideal Systems launch combined camera tech for Asia-Pac

    Michelle Clancy | 23 May 2016

Electric Friends, a Norwegian-based manufacturer of robotic camera systems for broadcasters, and Ideal Systems are launching an integrated technology to the Asia Pacific market.

Electric FriendsThe invention has a seven-axis robotic camera arm, and is operated through an intuitive control surface by which each camera axis can be manipulated by a touch screen with a live video underlay. In that way, the operator gets instantaneous feedback.

The robotic system is developed for a variety of applications, including studios, especially those with a space constraint, which addresses a big issue in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore. It replaces a staffed jib or small crane and is ideal for repeated trajectory takes in news and sports studios.

Electric Friends provides various different hardware and software configurations suitable to any virtual or physical studio as well as outside broadcast. For instance, it can use a Grass Valley LDX C80 Compact Series camera integrated with Vizrt Mozart studio automation and Vizrt 3D augmented graphics in a full live studio set-up.

“We are delighted with the global reception our product is getting, and we're very excited to partner across Asia with Ideal Systems Group. Ideal has built over 100 broadcast studios over the years and really understands this business,” said Anders Tomren, Electric Friends CEO. “They are the perfect sales and integration partner for our product in the APAC region.”

Pinnacle poised to drop lawsuit against Nigerian Government

    Rebecca Hawkes | 24 May 2016

Nigeria’s plans for a smooth switch to digital broadcasting have been strengthened after Pinnacle Communications reportedly abandoned its N1.2 trillion law suit against the Government.

Last month the Government launched a digital TV switchover pilot scheme in Jos, Plateau State, heralding the push towards a nationwide digital broadcasting infrastructure.

Pinnacle, which won a digital distribution license in Nigeria, had alleged in 2015 that the Government regulator NBC had breached its contract by issuing two other companies licences to distribute digital TV signals. Pinnacle said it had been told that Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) would be the only other digital terrestrial signal carrier.

However, the company has now mobilised its foreign partners Jampro Antennas and Gates Air in preparation for the digital rollout. Dipo Onifade, executive director of Pinnacle, told journalists that the lawsuit would be withdrawn once all the “grey areas” are cleared, reports This Day.

“We have held meeting with the Government lately, we and our foreign partners also met with the minister of information and culture, and we are also talking with the NBC. Our global partners are familiar with the terrain and we have infrastructures in all the states in Nigeria,” Sir Lucky Omoluwa, chairman, Pinnacle Communications, was quoted as saying.

Onifade said Pinnacle would play its part in ensuring that the digitisation process would be complete by the June 2017 deadline.
