Harmonic, Claro Chile partner on 4K UHD demo

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 14 May 2016

Claro Chile and Harmonic are to demonstrate end-to-end Ultra HD (UHD) delivery via Claro Chile's distribution network.

nasa uhdOver the next few months, Claro Chile will showcase UHD images produced and delivered by Harmonic on Sony UHD TV sets.

The Claro UHD demo channel will be the first of its kind shown in the country, highlighting, said Harmonic, the growing momentum for UHD content. “The global Ultra HD TV market is projected to reach 102.8 million units by 2020, according to the latest market research from Global Industry Analysts.

"Partnering together on this demo, Claro Chile and Harmonic will demonstrate that the Latin American market is ready for the remarkable viewing experience that can be achieved with Ultra HD,” remarked the company’s vice president of sales for Latin America, Alvaro Martin.

“The demo will include footage from NASA TV UHD, the first consumer UHD channel in North America, and we are confident that it's the most amazing video quality anyone has ever seen.”

At the heart of this demo is Harmonic's Electra X3 media processor, a converged media processor for UHD content with live, full-frame, full-GOP UHD encoding. It’s powered by the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine, an encoding technology that supports resolutions up to 2160p60 (HEVC Main 10) for broadcast and OTT multiscreen delivery.

Demo content will be sourced from NASA TV UHD, an ambient video channel that was recently launched by Harmonic and NASA, showing consumers the beauty of space and the various facets of NASA's space programme.

“By partnering with Harmonic, we have joined forces with a company that sets the standard for innovation in Ultra HD production and delivery,” said Mariano Orihuela, director of residential markets at Claro Chile. “We look forward to bringing the very best in Ultra HD to our subscribers, elevating their entertainment experience to an entirely new level.”

In April, Intelsat and Harmonic expanded their linear 4K demonstration channel, HVN Intelsat UHD to include the Latin American region. The HVN Intelsat UHD channel was created to showcase and facilitate the introduction of compelling UHD and high dynamic range (HDR) content and its ability to create viewer interest and loyalty.

he FTTH total stood at 428,000 (+196%), while connections through radio, satellite and mobile networks rose to 144,000 (+151%).

Eutelsat adapts to slowing industry-wide momentum

Eutelsat said that revenue growth in the third quarter was below expectations, reflecting a worse than expected environment in several emerging markets.

The operator said that conditions in particular Latin America were affected, where much of the opeator’s new capacity is targeted, and the spread of tough competitive conditions in data services to all markets.

As a result, Eutelsat expects revenues 2015-16 to be broadly flat, downgrading its forecast from the bottom-end of the 2-3% range previously. These headwinds will continue to impact Full Year 2016-17 revenues. In consequence, revenues are now expected in the region of -3% to -1% (versus the previous +4-6% range).

Eutelsat said it is adapting to slowing industry-wide momentum, undertaking a wide-ranging review of its organisation and priorities with an emphasis on cash-flow generation and margin support. A detailed update will be provided in July.

“Our business is strong and highly resilient. We are adjusting our strategy in the face of slowing industry-wide growth and we are committed to maximizing cash and protecting our profitability during this cycle,” said Rodolphe Belmer, CEO.

“Our industry continues to offer long-term growth levers and we are confident we can position ourselves to capture these opportunities and generate value for our stakeholders.”

Total revenues for the third Qqarter ending March 31, 2016 stood at €383.0 million, up 1.1% at constant currency and by 4.2% in actual terms, the appreciation of the dollar relative to the euro adding some three points to top-line growth.

Third quarter revenues for Video Applications amounted to €239.1 million, up 4.9% at constant currency. This rise mainly reflected the entry into service of Eutelsat 8 West B in October 2015 and Eutelsat 36C mid-February 2016, as well as higher revenues at Fransat on the back of the transition to HD in France, which is now nearing completion. These elements more than offset lower revenues at the Hot Bird position following the non-renewal of several contracts with service providers in recent months, as well as a decline in revenues from Professional Video.

At March 31, 2016, the total number of channels broadcast by Eutelsat satellites stood at 6,156, up 7.1% year-on-year. HD penetration continued to rise, representing 13.1% of channels compared to 11.7% a year earlier, or 807 channels, up from 672 a year earlier.

Multimedia gains subs as profit falls

The Polish cable operator Multimedia Polska had 827,000 subscribers to its video services at the end of Q1, or 41,000 (+5%) more than a year earlier.

As of the end of March, it had 1,622,400 marketable homes and a total of 1,690,900 RGUs.

Single play, double play and multi play customer totals were 387,500, 310,600 and 128,900 respectively, with the latter figure slightly down on last year due to some giving up fixed voice services.

ARPU per customer in Q1 stood at PLN69.5 (€15.7), up from PLN66.4 a year earlier, while video churn was 0.69% (0.72%).

Multimedia Polska’s revenues in Q1 amounted to PLN181,002,000, a 3% increase on a year earlier, with video, at PLN90,225,000 (+4%) accounting for half of the total.

Adjusted EBITDA was PLN89,281,000 (unchanged) and profit PLN10,931,000 (-4%).
