Pay-TV drives revenue growth for América Móvil

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 02 May 2016

In quite a volatile quarter for the Mexican telco, América Móvil reported revenue growth across Latin America for its broadband and pay-TV operations.

america movilThe company closed Q1 2016 with nearly $13 billion in revenues, 1.4% more than a year before. “Fixed broadband and pay-TV increased 7.9% and 5.9% year-on-year, but mobile data revenues decelerated, particularly in Mexico and Brazil. Central America continued to out-perform other regions, posting 5.9% service revenue growth at constant exchange rates,” stated América Móvil in its quarterly report.

The quarter, says the company, was marked by the depreciation of the Mexican peso during the first two months of the year. Indeed, currency volatility has been named by almost every pan-American telco as their greatest immediate challenge.

Despite being the smallest of América Móvil’s fixed businesses, pay-TV reached 21.9 million households throughout the region, with these figures strengthening the telco’s position as the leading pay-TV provider in a region with less than 70 million total subscriptions.

“We ended March with 81 million revenue generating units (RGUs), 3.8% more than a year before as our fixed-broadband accesses reached 26 million and the total number of pay-TV units was 22 million, up 1.7% even after net disconnections of DTH units in Brazil,” stated the company.

Peru, Colombia and Central America became América Móvil’s fastest growing operations on the fixed-line platform, while Brazil accounted for nearly half of the fixed RGUs with 37 million, followed by Mexico with 22 million units.

Tigo sets date for completion of cable digitalisation in Paraguay

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 02 May 2016

With only 6% of subscribers still using analogue, Millicom’s Tigo Star intends to complete cable services digitalisation in Paraguay before the end of 2017.

tigo logoAs the telco has recently acquired local operators with their own cable networks, Tigo Star has also been updating its pay-TV infrastructures to support digital broadcasting. According to Alicia Borja, subscriber manager at Tigo Star, speaking to the local newspaper Última Hora, every household should be digital in 2017.

“Our plan is to complete the migration to the digital network for mid-2017. That being said, this operation won’t have any cost to subscribers, not even regarding the new set-top boxes that we are installing,” she said.

With nearly 250,000 pay-TV subs, Paraguay is becoming one of Tigo’s strongest telecom operations in Latin America. Indeed, Millicom has announced a $2.5 billion investment through to 2020, looking “to improve connectivity and make Paraguay enter the worldwide digital economy,” according to CEO Mauricio Ramos.

FreeCast debuts Select TV white-label streaming

    Michelle Clancy | 02 May 2016

FreeCast’s Rabbit TV Plus has launched Select TV, a multiscreen streaming service.

freecastFreeCast is making the service’s operating platform available to license, co-brand or white label, so that “virtually any company can offer a compelling entertainment package that monetises current trends towards over-the-top (OTT) video, rather than suffering from them,” it said. The company added that is already in talks with telcos, WISPs, regional cable providers and tech firms, some of whom are in line to launch their own services in partnership with FreeCast.

“Select TV is really the pinnacle of entertainment for the consumer,” said CEO William Mobley. “You can watch virtually everything with it, and you never pay a dime more than you have to. But what’s really exciting is that this is the first ever private-label TV solution. That’s huge, because if you have a cable or satellite TV provider that’s losing subscribers, or a rural telco that can’t offer traditional pay-TV, or even a start-up with a lot of users but not a lot of revenue, we’ve created a turnkey way for them to make money from the very trends that have otherwise been so disruptive.”

Devices will be able to access Select TV via the Web, but the platform will also be able to power media devices from streaming sticks to set-top boxes (STBs). The idea is to create an agnostic and universal interface through which viewers can access all types of content sources, including traditional pay-TV subscriptions, over-the-air broadcasts and Web-based video providers.
