NBC Olympics, Snapchat partner for Olympics video coverage

    Michelle Clancy| 01 May 2016

NBC Olympics and Snapchat will partner to present what they say will be ‘unique’ perspectives from this summer’s 2016 Rio Olympics and the US Olympic Team Trials.

The plans include daily ‘Snapchat Live Stories’ and an NBC Rio Olympic ‘Discover’ channel. Both the Live Story experiences and Discover channel will be available to Snapchatters in the US for the two weeks around the Games.

NBC Olympics will co-produce the NBC Rio Olympic Discover channel with Buzzfeed, a regular contributor to both the Snapchat Discover platform and NBC’s content projects.

The Live Stories will allow thousands of Snapchatters attending select US Olympic Team Trial competitions and the Rio Games to contribute through photo and video Snaps to one collective, Snapchat-curated story. These will include behind-the-scenes and fan moments from the ground that capture the experience and excitement of attending the event.

The NBC Rio Olympic channel on Snapchat Discover will generate content that covers all aspects of the Games, co-produced by Buzzfeed’s dedicated team on the ground. As an NBC Olympics’ social partner for the Games, Buzzfeed will make use of NBC’s access to athletes, as well as clips and shots from inside and outside Rio Olympic venues. The Discover channel will be live throughout the duration of the Rio Olympics, launching on 4 August, one day before the Opening Ceremony, and closing on 22 August, the day after the Closing Ceremony.

“We are thrilled to be working closely with Snapchat on extending the stories and excitement of the Rio Olympics to their large, dynamic, and socially active audience,” said Gary Zenkel, president, NBC Olympics. “And who better to partner with to produce content for that audience than Buzzfeed, perhaps the most creative producers in the social content space.”

NBC Olympics will lead the sales efforts across both Live Stories and Discover channel, working closely with the Snapchat sales team.

The 2016 Rio Olympics will be seen on the networks of NBCUniversal, and streamed on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports Live Extra app, both of which require authentication for full access to streams of all Olympic competition. In Latin America, América Móvil will stream the Rio Olympics free on Clarovideo across the region.

It'sMe mobile app launches for video broadcast

    Michelle Clancy | 01 May 2016

The live video streaming app It'sMe has launched on the Google Play and the iOS app store.

itsMeThe app, specifically designed for video sharing, supports live videos of any size or length.

“Forget what you knew about live streaming and discover the social media of tomorrow,” the company said. “ ‘It'sMe’ allows you to share what's important anywhere, anytime! As a broadcaster, you can share your best moments, sporting events, fashion shows, music concerts and so much more with everyone and receive live feedback. As a viewer, it has never been so easy to be everywhere at the same time.”

The app allows users to communicate with others using Wi-Fi or 4G, so any number of users can watch the videos at the same time and engage with each other simultaneously.

People share videos for many reasons. By analysing the 100 most shared videos online, StreamSafe's recent research found that just under half (48%) of the 1,000 UK consumers surveyed agreed they would share the videos they saw which inspired them, beating both happiness (43%) and excitement (41%), which were the second and third most powerful emotions in shareability.

First HbbTV app for TV Markiza

Slovakia’s leading broadcaster TV Markiza has launched its first HbbTV app in co-operation with the Czech development company Mautilus.

The app allows viewers to watch news from the server Správy online | TVnoviny.sk, weather information and Teletext.

Zdenko Rysavy, CTO of TV Markiza, added: “In terms of technological progress, we consider HbbTV to be a very important step forward, and if everything goes according to plan, we will further expand these activities in the near future.”

    US payboxes hold onto subscribers

The six leading pay-TV operators in the United States maintained their subscriber levels in the first quarter of 2016.
The informitv Multiscreen Index says between them the operators gained 33,000 video customers.

AT&T U-verse reported the largest loss of video subscribers. AT&T has been promoting the services of its DirecTV subsidiary, which made the greatest gains but fell short of making up the difference by 54,000. Between the two services, AT&T still has 25.34 million video customers, making it the market leader in the United States.
•Comcast added 53,000 video subscribers, its best first quarter result in nine years, taking its total to 22.40 million.
•DirecTV gained 328,000 subscribers in the United States, for a total of 20.11 million. It lost 73,000 subscribers in Latin America, led by the loss of over 100,000 in Brazil.
•DISH Network lost 23,000 subscribers, ending the quarter with 13.87 million, down by 139,000 year on year.
•Time Warner Cable added 21,000 residential video customers, with a total of 10.84 million. Charter Communications, which is planning to acquire the company, gained 10,000, for a total of 4.33 million.
•Verizon Fios gained 36,000, compared to 90,000 in the same quarter a year previously, taking its total to 5.86 million.
•AT&T U-verse shed 382,000, dropping down to 5.23 million. The service has lost 737,000 subscribers in 12 months as AT&T concentrates on DirecTV.

“Considering concerns about cord cutting, the leading pay-television services in the United States are managing to hang on to their television customers,” said Dr William Cooper, the editor of the informitv Multiscreen Index.

The informitv Multiscreen Index tracks subscriber numbers for 100 leading pay-TV services worldwide.

Eutelsat and SSL test Q/V band

Eutelsat Communications and Space Systems Loral (SSL) have successfully carried out transmissions at Extremely High Frequencies (EHF). The experimental payload was flown into space on the Eutelsat 65 West A Satellite.

The two companies are analysing the potential of the Q/V band (40-50 GHz) as an enabler of future Terabit satellite broadband programmes. The collected data will help steer the design of adaptive techniques and hub architectures that will shape the blueprint of future broadband communications systems.

Extremely High Frequencies stand to enhance the performance of the next generation of High Throughput Satellite programmes. By offloading backhaul links between a satellite and its hubs from the Ka-band to the Q/V band, significantly more bandwidth can be made available for users and the number of hubs can be reduced, helping drive down cost per bit.

For SSL, the Q/V band demonstration is a step forward on its roadmap for implementing new technologies that will support next generation telecommunication solutions.

MTG signs off on Russian TV asset

Russia’s CTC Media has announced the final terms of its cash-out merger transaction.

Due to close in the middle of this month, following a tax refund from the US Internal Revenue Service, it will see a total of $239 million distributed among the shareholders.

For its part, Modern Times Group (MTG), which previously held a 38% stake in the broadcaster, will receive $123 million in cash.

In a statement, MTG says the cash proceeds will be used to reduce its borrowing levels, and fund the ongoing development of the group’s digital video entertainment businesses.

According to Jørgen Madsen Lindemann, president & CEO, MTG: “This marks the final step in our withdrawal from those entities impacted by the change in the Russian laws regarding foreign ownership of mass media. CTC Media had already taken the necessary steps to comply with the law and is now distributing the proceeds of that process. We have invested a total of $123 million in Russia since 2001.The proceeds from the sale of our Russian and related assets, together with dividends received, is now expected to have amounted to $768 million.”

KPN in Q1: IPTV up; DTT down

During the first quarter of 2016, KPN’s DTT service Digitenne lost 21,000 subscribers and now totals 329,000.

The operator lost 88,000 during the past twelve months, or a loss of 21% of its DTT subscriber base. However, growth of the number of homes taking IPTV more than offsets this decline. At the moment KPN serves about three out of ten Dutch households with TV, making it the second largest TV platform after Ziggo.

KPN’s net adds in broadband (+22,000) and IPTV (+53,000) showed continued good growth during Q1 2016. Triple play net adds were 36,000, resulting in a 59% penetration of the broadband customer base (Q1 2015: 54%) and a growing number of RGUs per household (2.10 vs. 1.97 in Q1, 2015).

KPN’s current DTT licence will expire on February 1, 2017. Earlier, KPN has said it intends to continue to offer its DTT platform Digitenne.

The Dutch government is planning to introduce DVB-T2 when the current licences run out at the end of January, 2017.
