    Paprika Latino appoints new CEO

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 17 April 2016

Paprika Latino has appointed its current COO Akos Erdos as CEO.

Prior to joining Paprika in 2013, Akos headed Origo Film Studios in Hungary.

Paprika was first established in Romania and is now present in most of central Europe, from the Baltics to Bulgaria. Paprika has also expanded into Costa Rica, where it produces hit ‘sunshine reality’ formats like Paradise Hotel, Survivor and Are you the One for multiple countries and broadcasters. Paprika is both a partner for international rights owners, as well as a developer of its own original programming. It provides international clients with a unique combination of location services and hub productions, such as for Release the Hounds, while home-grown titles include Fish on the Cake, which was first produced in Hungary in 2007.

“I am very pleased to announce Akos as the new CEO of Paprika. He will continue to develop our relationships with our ever growing customer base, and as more and more of our own formats are broadcast across the central Europe region,” said Morten Aass, CEO of parent company Nice Entertainment.

Akos replaces Peter Marschall, who founded Paprika in 2004 and is leaving the company as part of a planned succession process.

“Paprika has been my total focus and dedication for more than 10 years,” said Marschall. “I have had the privilege to build and work with some of the most talented teams in the business, and I am really proud of what we have accomplished together. I have enjoyed every step of this entrepreneurial success story, and I am sure that Paprika and Nice will continue their positive development in the future.”

Quarter of Latin Americans ready to cut the cord

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17 April 2016

Over-the-top (OTT) video platforms and pay-TV services have been in a balanced relationship in LATAM so far, but a new Nielsen report shows 23% subscribers might cut the cord in the near future.

Nearly seven in ten Latin Americans are already using some kind of video-on-demand (VOD) service, although only 21% said to be paying for one. Still, subscription VOD (SVOD) is more common in Mexico (28% Mexicans pay for it), Colombia (25%) and Brazil (23%).

According to the report, 76% of VOD consumers are also paying for a traditional cable or satellite platform, indicating cord-cutting is not threatening pay-TV industry yet.

But, as highlighted by Nielsen, 23% Latin Americans are using VOD services more than once a day, reducing pay-TV watching time, thus thinking of cutting the cord as VOD subscriptions are also a more affordable video option. Indeed, 37% VOD subscribers think quality-price ratio is better than for pay-TV.

In addition to price, convenience is another factor making Latin American habits to change. Over half of VOD users like this kind of service because they can watch their favourite programmes anywhere at any time, just when they like to. Besides, 35% think VOD is convenient for families, so everybody can watch different contents at the same time.

“Latin American viewers’ habits are changing, they are now on control of what they watch, and how and when they watch it,” stated Nielsen in the report. “And advertisers are also using the different platforms and technologies to reach potential customers in newer and more creative ways.”

Telefónica mulls launch of global content production house

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17 April 2016

Content is a growing business for Spain’s largest telco, whose recently-appointed president plans to strengthen this even more by launching a global production company.

According to inside sources quoted by the financial newspaper Cinco Días, Telefónica intends to use DTS, parent house of Canal+, which was acquired last year, as base to build up a more international content producer.

This new company, which may be called Movistar Plus, will operate in a similar way to the telco’s pay-TV platform in Spain, Movistar+. It will target two big business areas: creation and acquisition of content, and worldwide commercialisation.

The plans of Telefónica’s new president, José María Álvarez-Pallete, align with the intentions of the company’s former head, César Alierta. Over last two years, the telco has been slowly entering the content production arena as it expands its pay-TV operations in Spain and Latin America.

Now, also with an over-the-top (OTT) expansion up and running in LATAM, Telefónica aims to compete better with other video players, such as Netflix, Televisa or Claro.

According to Cinco Días, the telco’s workers have already been notified of important structural changes to take place within this year in order to build a single and global content unit.

Netflix to produce new Brazilian series

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17 April 2016

Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) leader has announced its second production in Brazil, slated for 2017.

The as yet unnamed Netflix Original will highlight the Lava Jato scandal, also known as Petrolao in Brazil, and will investigate money laundering in several businesses, especially around oil companies. The series will be filmed in 2016 and is directed by José Padilha, best known for Narcos, first LATAM-based series, and Tropa de Elite.

“Jose Padilha has the talent to transform reality into audiovisual narrative. Besides, he is just in the right spot to document this important moment of Brazil’s history,” said Eirk Barmack, international VP, original content, Netflix.

“The project intends to overview the federal investigation to unveil largest conspiracy and corruption case in Brazil ever. Impartiality is essential to face this series, and I have no doubts Netflix is the best partner for this project,” added Padilha.

Netflix is already producing its first Brazilian series, 3%, which is being filmed in Ultra HD and will premiere later this year.

NAB 2016: Zixi Adds live linear service to managed service suite

    Joseph O'Halloran | 17 April 2016

IP video firm Zixi has added linear functionality to simplify contribution, distribution and aggregation of channels for OTT, MVPD and content providers.

The company says that the addition of the new Live Linear Managed Service to its Zixi Managed Services (ZMS) suite provides broadcasters and content owners with an economical alternative to fibre and satellite with the same reliability, uptime and security.

Using this service, the Zixi assures that linear content in all formats, bitrates and quality, can be delivered to major service providers over IP using its, with a setup time that is measured in hours instead of days and with up to 99.999% reliability. Zixi adds that its Live Linear Managed Service can also enable new content and revenue opportunities.
