Kaltura, Harmonic team for OTT video management

    Michelle Clancy | 15 April 2016

Kaltura and Harmonic have partnered to deliver a software as a service (SaaS) platform that lets over-the-top (OTT) players quickly launch ‘live to OTT’, as well as video-on-demand (VOD) and time-shifted services.

kaltura html5Kaltura has integrated Harmonic’s VOS 360 professional cloud media processing service with its OTT video platform to provide a cloud OTT platform that can be run over various public and private clouds.

The integrated SaaS platform is said to be able to address all video management and service aspects, primarily when they are looking for ‘glass to glass’ service. The turnkey ecosystem makes it easy to contribute, transcode, package, scramble and deliver live SD, HD content to all connected devices, the company said.

“We are seeing a growing number of content owners, TV networks, publishers and service providers asking for a flexible SaaS platform that will allow them to manage their entire OTT service - high quality live/linear OTT channels,” said Ron Yekutiel, Kaltura co-founder, chairman and CEO. “This integration with Harmonic means that we can jointly offer a complete cloud-based platform that does just this - and can be run on a variety of different cloud environments.”

Patrick Harshman, president and CEO at Harmonic, added: “In the past, OTT players had to compromise on either the level of video quality or their CAPEX investment. OTT players now have a complete cloud solution to meet their OTT needs without compromising the quality of experience. The result is a faster time to market for both live/linear, VOD and time-shifted OTT TV services, underpinned by a highly flexible and scalable SaaS platform,” he added.

NAB 2016: Rohde & Schwarz DVS to offer 4K focus

    Joseph O'Halloran | 15 April 2016

At NAB 2016, Rohde & Schwarz DVS will highlight how its R&S VENICE ingest and playout platform is meeting the requirements of modern live and studio productions in particular new 4K requirements.

RS DVS Bildmotiv dvs de 20141009Offering an open system architecture, a variety of supported file formats, codecs and interfaces and an integrated feature set, R&S VENICE is designed to allow TV studios to optimise current and future workflows. The 4K version of the product, R&S VENICE 4K, also features native 4K/Ultra HD-1 acquisition, playback and transform functions, delivering to production and TV studios, says the company, leading performance and highest picture quality in this field.

The R&S VENICE 4K platform enables ingest, playout and transform processes for 4K/UHD-1 material with up to 60p. R&S VENICE 4K records material directly with 4K/UHD-1 resolution, which, says the makers, means that time-consuming stitching processes are eliminated. At the same time, an HD-derivative can be generated to provide compatibility with existing HD workflows. The dual destination feature makes it possible to save UHD-1 signals in parallel and independently of one another to two different storage environments, eliminating transfer times for copy processes. UHD-1 signals can be directly recorded to internal and external storage media, and the recorded material can be directly accessed.

“We are excited to open TV studios new perspectives up to 4K in studio production with our R&S VENICE ingest and playout platform,” said Michael Hackl, head of product management broadcast solutions at Rohde & Schwarz DVS. With R&S VENICE 4K, broadcasters can gradually migrate their production to 4K while orienting themselves to their familiar workflows.”

Tigo joins booming Latin American OTT arena

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 16 April 2016

2016 has become a year of over-the-top (OTT) explosion in Latin America, with Millicom’s Tigo being the latest, but probably not the last, to join the party.

Formerly a Netflix stronghold, Latin America has recently seen the arrival of Televisa’s blim and the rocketing expansion of Telefónica’s Movistar Play. Now, Millicom’s telco has started the deployment of Tigo Play, its own video-on-demand (VOD) service.

blim, Televisa’s video-on-demand (VOD) and streaming service, is, for the moment, carrying an aggressive content strategy, aiming to take the crown from Netflix not only in Mexico, but across the entire region.

Meanwhile, Telefónica is deploying more silent moves, but Movistar Play has launched in Uruguay, Costa Rica, Guatemala and El Salvador since the beginning of the year, and will arrive in Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Nicaragua before the end of the year.

Tigo Play has been the latest to join the boom, but it intends to fight for a place in the regional OTT market. The VOD platform launched this week in Guatemala and will gradually arrive in other markets in which Millicom’s company operates.

According to local newspapers, the platform will first land in Costa Rica - Tigo’s largest business - but will then arrive in other emerging markets such as Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, and more established ones like Colombia and Paraguay.

With these last moves, OTT video platforms seem finally to be taking off in LATAM, although for different reasons. While Televisa sees an opportunity for wider content distribution, telcos as Telefónica and Tigo focus on OTT platforms as a driver of demand for their mobile and fixed services.

NAB 2016: NeuLion launches real time OTT dashboard

    Editor | 17 April 2016

Live and on-demand online video broadcasting, distribution and monetisation firm NeuLion has added an over-the-top (OTT) analytics dashboard to its core Digital Platform.

The dashboard is designed to allow operators to monitor in real time every viewer's quality of experience and for the content rights holder, business metrics showing instant feedback on the health and growth of their OTT and TV everywhere (TVE) services. The company believes that in a continually changing and fragmented digital landscape, the new OTT Dashboard will give its partners a single view of their digital service that seamlessly combines both quality of service and quality of experience for their viewers but now also includes real time subscriber business metrics.

NeuLion also claims that its OTT Dashboard ensures the best quality video is delivered to all viewers while driving revenue. With continual data collection at the subscriber and device level, it delivers real-time metrics to analyse every single viewer through live and VOD content QOS/QOE monitoring that is updated every 30 seconds with views broken down by device, bitrates or location.

OTT Dashboard's global heat maps offer real time analytics on specific streaming content by device plus, as viewers renew or sign up for the digital services, details of the viewer’s attributes light up on the OTT Dashboard. It also has integration with Nielsen data to create one view of broadcast and OTT analytics together.

The new OTT Dashboard also enables customers to make business decisions based on real-time critical data analytics and global intelligence to enhance content offerings, attract new customers and retain existing customers all the while, says NeuLion, driving more revenue for their OTT service.

“NeuLion gives us the ability to visualise what is taking place for our Univision Now service across platforms in a single view,” said Scott Levine, senior vice president, product and technology at NeuLion customer Univision Communications. “With these real-time insights, we can improve our audience's quality of service, lowering churn while making the experience better for our users.”

“The NeuLion Digital Platform and its OTT Dashboard provides all the data and more that we need to deliver the highest quality service to our viewers.” added Michael Calderon, vice-president, programming and digital media at The Big Ten Network. “We have been able to take all of the data and make real-time decisions that help reduce customer churn, drive subscriptions through customer acquisitions, retention and satisfaction, while optimising our marketing efforts based on the results of the OTT Dashboard.”

MHz chooses VHX to power video on demand service

    Michelle Clancy | 17 April 2016

Video technology platform VHX has announced a partnership with media entertainment company MHz Networks.

vhx ottMHz is a distributor of foreign *language content subtitled in English in the US, including European crime and drama series like Spiral. It has transitioned its video subscription network to VHX, a full*stack solution that supports a growing subscriber base and provides the technical capabilities necessary to deliver an SVOD experience.

“MHz Networks is not a technology company, we are a media company. We need to spend our resources telling our entertaining and compelling stories, not on developing a video delivery platform which is costly and time*consuming. VHX gives us the ability to do just that,” said Lance Schwulst, VP of content & digital at MHz.

VHX is powering all the technology for the company’s SVOD service, MHz Choice, and delivering branded video experiences to its fans on the web, mobile web, and across a suite of custom OTT apps developed for iPhone, iPad, Android and Roku subscribers.

“MHz Choice licenses more foreign language entertainment content subtitled in English than any other company in the US and we’re thrilled to be their technology partner and support their OTT distribution strategies,” said Jamie Wilkinson, co*founder and CEO, VHX.

With the move to VHX, European television fans can now subscribe to the service directly from their iPhone or iPad with an in*app subscription feature, and have the options to watch MHz Choice videos online, on mobile, via AirPlay or Chromecast, and on free MHz Choice iPhone, iPad, Android, and Roku apps.

In March, Anvato announced that its Media Content Platform (MCP) had been deployed by MHz Networks for the relaunch of MHz Choice.
