    Challenging times for Forthnet

Greece’s Forthnet suffered a 2.5% loss in pay-TV subscribers in 2015, ending the year with 494,643.

Meanwhile, its broadband subscriber total fell by 4.5% over the same period to 640,689.

Forthnet also saw a fall in the number of households receiving triple-play/bundled services, down by 4.7% to 346,322, while the percentage of households with triple-play/bundled services fell by 0.72 percentage points to 43.89%.

Forthnet’s revenues in 2015 amounted to €352,049,000 (-7%), while its reported and adjusted EBITDA were €48,225,000 (-18.8%) and €50,475,000 (-15.8%) respectively.

Commenting on the results, Forthnet’s CEO Panos Papadopoulos said: “In 2015, the circumstances in Greek economy led to a further decline in purchasing power, affecting negatively the retail sector. In such an economic environment, we maintained a conservative commercial approach that is reflected in the financial results of the company. For the current year, we will emphasise even more on improving customers experience, through innovative on demand services in pay-TV, fully utilising our new generation decoders”.

NAB 2016: Paywizard upgrades consumer engagement tools

    Joseph O'Halloran | 14 April 2016

Pay-TV subscriber management technology provider Paywizard is to debut new marketing and consumer engagement tools as part of an upgrade to its Agile subscription, billing and CRM solution.

To be unveiled at NAB 2016, the new features are designed to enable insight-based customer acquisition, retention and churn reduction. They align directly with the company’s Decision Moments when consumers interact with a pay-TV service, namely Find, Join, Consume, Upgrade, Downgrade, Bill, Leave and Win Back. They are designed to enable operators to target customers with effective acquisition and retention tactics at these critical Decision Moments of the subscriber journey.

The technology allows operators to track their progress at each Decision Moment and proactively manage their customer base and using a dedicated dashboard they can also select specific Moments and structure activity around that particular stage of the subscriber journey.

For example, they could see all people who have registered an interest with the service but not signed up, and create targeted engagement campaigns as a result. Or they could view customers who have terminated their contact, in order to drive churn reduction campaigns.

Other notable new features include tools to support targeted campaigns aimed at growing subscriber volumes, increasing ARPU from existing customers, reducing churn and extending the customer lifecycle; enhanced subscription creation capabilities; real-time insights, applicable to all Decision Moments, including active churn analysis and monitoring of subscription movements to feed into marketing initiatives; the ability to track positive and negative interactions with customers, including purchases, payment status, offers and communications received.

“As the pay-TV and pay-OTT landscape becomes more competitive we’re seeing consumers starting to adopt a ‘dip in and out’ approach,” explained Paywizard CMO Bhavesh Vaghela. Pay-OTT services, for example, are experiencing staggering churn rates of around 6% per month and this is forcing operators to redefine their business models with greater emphasis on customer service. Now more than ever, it is vitally important for operators to identify with their customers at each step of their journey, and have the tools in place to keep them happy, engaged and loyal.”

Over 1MN Android users install TV news application

    Editor | 14 April 2016

Over one million users have installed the RT News for Android mobile application, a figure that RT says has been driven by overall demand for its content increasing by roughly 30% in 2015.

RTThe online video news service says that its developer team’s successful optimisation of the RT News for Android mobile application has tripled monthly subscriber count. In April 2016, Google included RT News in Play Market’s New Apps and Releases section, which contains the most popular apps. RT claims that its ratings now eclipse rivals such as Euronews, Voice of America and the Washington Post.

“Mobile platforms can be said to have delivered on the promise of becoming the market’s fastest growing and most attractive segment. We registered growth of mobile traffic for RT projects back in 2014, when it reached 60% of the overall traffic, outperforming the data exchange generated by desktop users,” commented Elvira Chudnovskaya, head of RT’s mobile development.

“Knowing what our audience wants, we started developing RT’s online content from the very beginning – along with television broadcasting,” added Margarita Simonyan, RT’s editor-in-chief. “The strategy worked, as we are now ahead of other international media in many ways.”

Olympusat to premiere La Mujer de la Esclavina, The Other Barrio

    Joseph O'Halloran | 14 April 2016

TV network provider Olympusat is to premiere two key films on its Gran Cine and Ultra Film Spanish-language movie networks for the US Latino audience.

olympusatOlympusat has a package of originally produced and recently released blockbusters from México, Latin America, and the US in their original Spanish-language format. Its Gran Cine service — available in the US on Verizon FiOS, RCN, ACA and Choice Cable — is to premiere La Mujer de la Esclavina, while the Ultra Film HD movie network will debut The Other Barrio.

La Mujer de la Esclavina tells the story of Carmen, a seamstress who in the midst of preparations for the Quasimodo feast, witnesses her family’s atmosphere broken after the arrival of her husband, Juan’s, ex-wife, who he blames for the death of their son. “The idea for making this film comes from a story I read in the newspaper about a teenage mother who went out one night and left her baby alone near the paraffin stove and, upon returning, she found part of the house burnt and her baby dead, unfortunately,” explained the director Alfonso Gacitua.

Directed by Dante Betteo, and based on the short story with the same name by Alejandro Murguia, The Other Barrio is a fictionalised account of true events, set against the current epidemic of evictions and gentrification. It follows investigator Roberto Morales as he sifts through a suspicious and fatal fire in a residential hotel in San Francisco's rapidly gentrifying Mission District, and finds himself face to face with murder in the streets, corruption at City Hall and his own personal demons.

NAB 2016: Akamai preps fresh OTT capabilities

    Michelle Clancy | 14 April 2016

Akamai Technologies is prepping new capabilities, including accelerated ingest, latency reductions and predictive delivery, to help improve overall performance of over-the-top (OTT) video services and support growing demand for 4K and virtual reality content.

akamaiAkamai’s accelerated ingest capabilities are designed to minimise the amount of time live video streams take to reach the Akamai content delivery network (CDN) from their origination point. This faster transport is enabled through a combination of user datagram protocol (UDP) based delivery and dynamic encoder to entry-point mapping (DEEM), which provides improved throughput and automatically optimises entry-points based on current Internet conditions, the company said. Accelerated ingest is intended to help ensure the highest possible quality viewing experiences with fast start-up times, limited buffering and consistent video performance.

Accelerated ingest is among several enhancements to Akamai’s Media Services Live delivery solutions that are designed to reduce latency, addressing a common concern raised by consumers watching live-streamed events. NAB Show attendees will be able to see first hand how Akamai is minimising the time between content capture and playback via in-booth demonstrations showing live OTT workflows from acquisition to end-user viewing devices.

Akamai is also introducing predictive delivery capabilities that aim to improve viewing experiences through instant start-up of high-quality/high-bitrate video with no buffering. Available as a white-labelled application or as part of a suite of modular, client-side SDKs, the technology allows on-demand content to be pre-positioned and stored on mobile and in-home devices, overcoming the inherent challenges of delivering video over the radio access network and Internet. New content can be propagated based upon end-user preferences and scheduled for delivery within parameters such as Wi-Fi only or during known off-peak hours.

In addition, visitors to Akamai’s NAB Show exhibit will be able to walk through 4K OTT workflows and see how the company’s technology and services can help broadcasters deliver exceptional online video experiences.

Akamai continues to make inroads for OTT. Recently, video provider TV.AE contracted UAE telco du and Akamai for OTT content delivery.

Primestream hoops NBA, others for sports media management

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 14 April 2016

Media management specialist Primestream has logged momentum within the sports broadcaster market.

nbaThe National Basketball Association (NBA), Encompass Media, The Tennis Channel, Werne Production House and DirecTV’s ROOT Sports regional sports channels are among the sports organisations to have recently adopted Primestream’s software to capture, produce, manage and deliver their programming.

At the start of the 2015-16 NBA regular season, the NBA launched a new courtside statistician replay system and centralised recordings for capturing games at all 29 stadiums, all managed from the NBA’s Secaucus (NJ’s Replay Center) using Primestream’s FORK software. The solution records an HD back-up and an h.264 proxy version for each game in every arena. Courtside, statisticians can review plays and log games in the arena and the h.264 proxy is delivered to a portable flash drive for the referees to take with them to review their calls.

In another example, Encompass, which offers media capture, management and distribution services, needed to expand its Atlanta facility to enable live ingest, real-time logging and integration with Adobe Premiere Pro for their coverage of CONCACAF futbol games. Encompass uses the FORK Ingest and Logger modules to capture live game feeds while simultaneously adding metadata to the media. With all assets centralised, editors can quickly find relevant media for highlight packages using the Primestream Media Asset Management panel built into Adobe Premiere Pro.

Dynamic Media Management virtualises media, enabling users to instantly access, automate and manage content based on any definable criteria. Primestream's suite of software seamlessly integrates capture, production, management and delivery of all assets for workflows as far ranging as traditional broadcast to OTT or mobile.

Primestream recently named Juan Pablo Alviz as sales VP for Florida, the Caribbean and Latin American markets.

NAB 2016: Weather Company enhances augmented reality, analytics for broadcasters

    Michelle Clancy | 14 April 2016

The Weather Company is launching an interactive presentation tool and introducing major enhancements to the company’s augmented reality and analytics solutions.

weatherNo matter the conditions outside, when consumers need their local weather and traffic updates, they seek actionable information that will help them prepare for or plan their days, says the company, and the idea is to allow broadcasters to provide the critical planning and potentially life-saving information.

“We have successfully used the Weather Company’s Max platform for nearly six years and seen a tremendous increase in engagement levels. Some of the newer products have allowed us to enhance how we bring the weather story to life across all platforms,” said Kevin Eubank, meteorologist, KSL TV. “The Weather Company is an industry leader when it comes to innovative cross-platform weather data and visualisation solutions. What makes it even better is that all of the applications seamlessly integrate into the existing Max platform, making it easier for me to provide my audience with the information they need.”

At NAB 2016, the company will reveal Max Connect, an application that enables presenters to interact with augmented reality elements in real time while continuously facing the audience. An iPad-based app, Max Connect removes the need for presenters to be tethered to one location, and enables them to maintain control over their show as they move freely around the studio or report remotely from location during breaking weather events. Via Max Connect, presenters will have quick access to any data layer or tool - allowing the weather team to more naturally telestrate and control their shows without having to use more cumbersome hand tracking or a touch screen. In addition, since Max Connect offers a familiar mobile design, presenters are empowered to confidently execute their shows at all times - even during severe weather when speed is critical.

It has also added virtual sets to Max Reality, a solution that uses advanced augmented reality technology to create dynamic, 3D visualisations of storms and atmospheric events. The virtual sets can be easily integrated using the existing chromakey technology and familiar Max workflow that the presenter has already invested in, and will allow presenters to quickly and easily pull together augmented reality visualisations during severe weather.

The company also added social posting to Max Engage, an analytics engine that monitors weather events and serves up the content to tell the right weather story to the impacted mobile audience using geo-fenced push notifications. Meteorologists will be able to publish concise and contextual hyper-local weather and traffic information directly to social platforms on a daily basis, which is critical for increasing engagement on other easily monetised platforms like web and mobile. And when there is severe weather, this solution will provide meteorologists with a fast and automated way to send geo-targeted customised push alerts to mobile users who are in the path of impending destructive weather.

“Our expanded product offerings for the Max Ecosystem will fundamentally shift the way weather is presented across all content platforms,” said Mark Gildersleeve, president of business solutions, Weather Company. “Through innovations to Max Reality, we’ve made it easier for presenters to deliver immersive experiences that bring the audience into significant weather events, conveying the impact in a way that’s never been done before. And, with Max Engage, stations now can deliver the most important content to audiences wherever they are, and right when they need it most."
