France Télévisions inks Eutelsat capacity deal

    Joseph O'Halloran | 01 April 2016

After announcing a number of deals in the MENA region, satellite operator Eutelsat has now announced a win much closer to home with France Télévisions.

eutelsatThe French public broadcaster will be taking capacity on the EUTELSAT 5 West A satellite allowing it to upgrade all of France 3's regional channels to HD from 5 April.

The 24 regional channels will be available for the two million homes receiving Fransat, Eutelsat’s free-to-view TV platform for French homes. Tough year for CTC Media

The Russian national commercial broadcaster CTC Media saw its revenue halve in 2015, down from $710.40 million in the previous year to $350.56 million.

Quoting a US report on the company, Interfax adds that in ruble terms its revenue decreased by 24%, and advertising revenue by 20%, in 2015.

The latter figure was much worse than that for the Russian TV ad market as a whole, which declined by 14%. CTC Media’s operating expenses declined by 37% to $345.97 million, and by 2% in ruble terms, and operating income fell from $157.9 million in 2014 to $4.6 million.

Having posted a net profit of $109 million in 2014, CTC Media had a net loss of $487 million last year.

CTC Media, in which MTG held a majority stake, was acquired in late 2015 by UTV Management for $193.1 million.

    Gazprom Media buys NMG stake

Gazprom Media has acquired an additional 7.5% stake in National Media Group (NMG), Russia’s largest media holding.

Kommersant reports that the vendor was Gennady Timchenko and the deal worth R11.12 billion (€144.9 million), with NMG’s total value estimated at R148.26 billion.

Gazprom Media is owned by Gazprombank, which lists Gazprom as one of its shareholders.

Meanwhile, NMG was formed in 2008 by the combined media assets of Rossiya, Severstal, Surgutneftegaz and Sogaz.

    Sky to sell Osterley HQ

Sky is to sell its West London headquarters in a deal worth £545 million.

The broadcaster has instructed BNP Paribas Real Estate to find a buyer for its facility in Osterley that it would then rent back in a projected 30-year agreement.

The site has been home to Sky since its debut as the four-channel service in 1989. It has subsequently grown to become the base for Sky News and Sky Sports.

Sky Studios was opened in 2011 at a cost of £233 million. It is home to eight naturally ventilated studios including five HD studios, 45 edit suites, 14 voice-over suites, four audio suites and on site post-production facilities.

A number of entertainment shows for Sky One are also recorded at the facility.

Estates Gazette, which first reported the news, said Sky was planning to reinvest the cash into its core business, rather than have its finances tied up in a property portfolio.

A sale was previously considered in 2012, but at the time the broadcaster decided against the move.
