Bright House taps NetCracker for personalisation

    Michelle Clancy | 15 February 2016

The sixth largest cable MSO in the US, Bright House Networks, has deployed NetCracker's eCommerce and CRM solutions to deliver greater personalisation.

The operator says that it is looking to provide customers with an interface to self-manage their service requirements without the involvement of a customer support representative (CSR).

"Delivering a superior customer experience is one of our most important objectives. By deploying eCommerce and CRM platforms, we can take a new approach to improve efficiency while personalising interactions with prospective and existing customers," said Jake Perlman, CIO, Bright House Networks.

"NetCracker has been a great partner in helping us transition to next-generation systems in a pragmatic way that gives us new features that don't require holistic change to our legacy platforms," he added.

    Michelle Clancy | 15 February 2016

Pixspan has announced a strategic reseller partnership with Post Logic of France, a video post-production, film, broadcast and 3D animation distributor.

The company is the first in France to offer Pixspan solutions for video storage and networking, along with enhancements to Autodesk's Flame family of products, including Flame Lustre, Flame Assist and Flare. Post Logic also can combine Pixspan with other technology options to create solutions across the entire imaging chain, from on-set though post and final assets.

"We are pleased to offer Pixspan's software solutions," said Gérard Bonnet, GM of Post Logic. "We continue to look for innovative media workflow technologies and appreciate the additional flexibility that Pixspan offers as a subscription service, replacing the need for permanent equipment decisions. As content creators take on larger 4K and 6K projects, customers can expand their resources as needed with Pixspan."

Pixspan's software products are designed to address workflow savings in speed, time and resources as file sizes keep growing across the marketplace due to higher resolutions and dynamic range.

"We are excited that Post Logic, with its wide range of quality solutions for the film, broadcast and animation markets, is offering Pixspan's products to their customers," said Michael Rowny, CEO of Pixspan. "We look forward to working with Post Logic on new workflow solutions, including those recently introduced with our partner, Autodesk."

Destination America to debut African-American ghost-hunting team

    Michelle Clancy | 15 February 2016

Destination America is bringing the first African-American paranormal team to TV.

Dalen Spratt, Juwan Mass and Marcus Harvey lead Destination America’s new series Ghost Brothers, on a mission to uncover whether some unique, legendary ‘haunted’ houses are the real deal.

Raised in religious households, Dalen, Juwan and Marcus were taught that ‘messing’ with the dead is dangerous business, but some unexplained experiences of their own piqued their intense fascination, ultimately driving them to find out first-hand just how spooky the supernatural can be.

The show is from Pilgrim Media Group, producers of the long-running mega-hit Ghost Hunters.

"Anyone boycotting the Academy Awards because of the absence of minorities represented might well find a kindred spirit in Ghost Brothers, the new series debuting on Destination America, featuring the first ever African-American ghost-hunting team,” said Henry S Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “At DA, we make a concerted effort to create programming that reflects the diversity of all Americans, everywhere, and are excited to have Dalen, Juwan and Marcus join our family.”

Haunted hot spots explored in the show include the Magnolia Hotel in Seguin; Prospect Place in Trinway; Allen House in Monticello; Magnolia Plantation in Derry; Delta Queen Steamboat in Houma; and the Fitzpatrick Hotel in Washington.

“Destination America is the leader in paranormal programming, and we are excited to bring diversity to this space with the very first African-American ghost-hunting team on television,” said Jane Latman, general manager of Destination America. “Dalen, Juwan and Marcus’ personalities shine through in Ghost Brothers, wearing their emotions on their sleeves in an incredibly relatable way during all of the fear, thrills and chills of investigating things that go bump in the night.”

    CueScript to debut CueiT

    Michelle Clancy | 15 February 2016

CueScript is set to debut its CueiT range of teleprompting software for on-air talent, along with a new CSF10 prompter system designed for use with jibs and cranes.

The feature set for CueiT includes: ribbon menu style, making all features viewable and accessible, without impeding the view of the script and run order; quick commands and features that can be accessed from multiple locations within the programme for convenience and ease of use; markers to enable the operator to create their own sub-run order and pinpoint positions to instantly navigate to within the script, either on their edit screen and/or the prompt output; no separate configuration menu; and all features are to hand without needing to come out of prompt mode.

The software is Unicode-compliant with multi-language and full bi-directional ability within a script. It is available in three versions: CueiT premier for the entry level market, CueiT Production and CueiT News.

The CSF10 meanwhile is a lightweight prompting system designed for use with jibs and cranes. The CSF10, which can be used with a hood and prompter glass or as a straight reading system without any additional hardware, features a 2000nit screen that is easy to read even in bright daylight conditions. The mounting system is rock solid, giving crane and jib operators the assurance of no movement or wobble at the end of a camera move. The system also features intelligent Cuelights that are automatically switched to either direction by a built-in motion sensor with no switching required.

    Mohu joins TVfreedom coalition

    Michelle Clancy | 15 February 2016

Raleigh, NC-based HDTV antenna retailer Mohu has joined the TVfreedom coalition.

Mohu joins local broadcasters, community advocates, network television affiliate associations, multicast networks and other retailers of over-the-air (OTA) broadcast television products and services. It will work with TVfreedom coalition members to help push for federal policies and legislation that will support local broadcast TV stations and advocate for free and local broadcast TV programming on multiple digital platforms.

"Mohu is pleased to partner with TVfreedom to advocate for expanded consumer access to free, local broadcast TV across America," said Mark Buff, president and founder, Mohu. "The power and reach of free, local broadcast TV has never been more important to America's television viewers, especially the millions of families who are looking for or have found viable alternatives to the high cost of pay television service."

"The growth in broadcast-only homes illustrates that free, over-the-air television is part of our future," added Robert Kenny, director of public affairs, TVfreedom. "While it's true that a growing number of Americans are using streaming services to access video content of their choice, they continue to rely on traditional broadcast television via an antenna and other means to stay connected to their communities, access local TV newscasts and emergency information, and enjoy popular network entertainment programming and live sports."

Digitisation in Serbia “an absolute success”

The transition to digital broadcasting in Serbia, though completed only six months ago, has already made the country over €100 million.

Quoted by Danas, Brako Gogic, the director of the transmission company ETV, said that the total cost of digitisation had been around €40 million, of which €10 million was provided by an EU grant. Earnings had amounted to €126 million, while the net profit was some €100 million.

Gogoc added that Serbia sold part of the 1,800 MHz spectrum last year for €21 million and the digital dividend last month for €105 million.

In hindsight, the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting has been “an absolute success” that Serbia could be proud of. Few, for instance, believed that the digital dividend could be sold so quickly.

Digitisation had also allowed TV signals to reach parts of Serbia that had previously not been able to receive any.

Gogoc also pointed out that several countries in the region, including Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Romania, were still far from completed their transition to digital broadcasting.

    IPTV grows in Russia

Russia ended 2015 with 2015 with 5.52 million IPTV subscribers, a 20.2% increase on the total a year earlier.

At the same time, according to figures produced by TMT Consulting and quoted by ComNews, the total number of pay-TV subscribers in the country increased by 3.7% to 39.4 million, compared to an 8.6% rise in 2014.

IPTV was the fastest growing pay-TV segment in 2014, while last year, in absolute terms, the increase in the IPTV subscriber base matched that in the satellite TV one.

In Moscow, IPTV accounted for 48% of new pay-TV connections in 2015 thanks largely to the new MGTS GPON fibre-optic network.

Rostelecom accounted for the majority of IPTV connections in Russia as a whole, gaining 0.6 million to reach 3.3 million at the end of last year.

Although cable remains the most popular way to receive pay-TV services in Russia, accounting for 46% of connections and followed by satellite (40%) and IPTV (14%), it is starting to IPTV, losing 1.5% of its subscriber base in 2015.
