Norman departure may impact ITV retrans fees

There’s widespread speculation that ITV chairman Archie Norman is to step down from the role after six years.

The former Conservative politician and supermarket boss has steered the commercial broadcaster through a difficult period, improving its online credentials, and bolstering its production capability.

Commenting on the speculation, analysts Liberum said they did not think Norman’s departure would have a significant impact on its strategic direction, but there were some subcontexts such as retransmission revenues and mergers and acquisitions.

There is widespread press speculation that Archie Norman, ITV’s Chairman since 2010, is to step down. We do not think this will make a significant change to ITV’s strategic direction nor prospects but there are several possible interesting sub-contexts around what it might mean around retransmission revenues and M&A at ITV.

“If the news is true, then we think it will raise questions about whether ITV will be acquired – there has been recent speculation on that point and this news is likely to fuel this,” Liberum said in a statement. “It may be coincidence but Mr Norman – an ex-Chairman of the Conservative Party – would be leaving when the Government has presumably reached its conclusions on several big issues in the UK TV sector, including whether to allow the main commercial channels to charge pay-tv operators retransmission fees for their main channels.”

Reports suggest chief executive Adam Crozier has committed to ITV for another two years.

    Viasat goes local in Russia

The Russian part of Viasat group will start designing its six movie channels locally from next month.

Quoting a statement by the company, Cableman reports that the channels in question – TV1000, TV1000 Russian Cinema, TV1000 Action, TV1000 Premium HD, TV1000 Megahit HD and TV 1000 Comedy HD – were previously produced out of London.

The move is aimed to further grow the popularity of the channels by making them more relevant to Russian viewers.

Viasat was sold by Modern Times Group (MTG) for $45.5 million last October.

The buyer of the international part of the business, operating in Ukraine, the Baltic Republics and Israel, was Sabiero Holdings Limited, while the Russian part of the business was bought by Synergy, a company believed to have links with Baring Vostok.

RTVE eyes international, Ultra HD productions

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 02 February 2016

Spain's public broadcaster RTVE has announced plans to produce its first format exclusive to its international network, along with several 4K productions.

Speaking during the first 2016 meeting of RTVE's administrative board, José Antonio Sánchez, the corporation's president, explained the plans to create a separated budget for Ultra HD formats, targeting new multiscreen audiences.

In addition, RTVE will produce a weekly show for the network's oldest international signal, TVE Internacional, during 2016 in a bid to link Spanish news stories with the Americas.

For the Spanish market, RTVE will produce 130 more episodes of the soap opera Acacias 38 and 146 of Seis Hermanas. In addition, a second season of the award-winning, Secuoya-produced Víctor Ross will also be filmed.

The new productions have been announced in spite of the growing deficit, to which 2015's activity is expected to add €70 million. The final results will be published in March, although RTVE's president has stated that the profit and loss statements will be balanced for the first time since 2007.

    Mediaset claims Spanish FTA throne

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez| 02 February 2016

Over 70% of the most-watched adverts in Spain in 2015 were broadcast by Mediaset's free-to-air (FTA) channels, claims the media group.

Mediaset closed 2015 with an average 31% share and a 33.1% commercial target, leading Spain's FTA ahead of its nearest competitor, Atresmedia, through its six networks – and it has been awarded with a seventh DTT signal. In addition, it averaged over 12 million online viewers per month on its various Web services.

Channel by channel, Telecinco was the country's most-watched network for every month of 2015 with an average 14.8% share, its best result since 2009. Cuatro (7.9% average share) has also registered its best figures since 2009, and FDF, a series channel, led the DTT themed networks.

At the same time as duopoly accusations are questioning Mediaset and Atresmedia's roles in the Spanish advertising market, Paolo Vasile's company said that 72% of the country's most viewed sports aired through its channel portfolio. Indeed, the ten first places on the ranking were broadcast by Telecinco.

Thunderbird to bring Israel’s Street Justice to US

    Michelle Clancy | 02 February 2016

Production company Thunderbird has acquired Armoza Formats’ police drama Street Justice for development and local adaptation in the US and Canadian markets in a deal which marks the first collaboration between the two companies.

Street Justice has aired three successful seasons on Israel’s Channel 10, all of which increased the channel’s average share in the time slot.

“Expanding our scripted offering internationally is a key focus for Armoza, and we look forward to working with Thunderbird and bringing this drama to life for the North American market,” said Avi Armoza, CEO of Armoza Formats.

Developed by Artza Productions: “Street Justice blurs the lines between legality and justice in a series packed with non-stop action, explosive stunts, gun fights, gritty crimes, car chases, dangerous romance and more,” says the company. “The series stars a hot-headed police detective who doesn't have the patience to wait for criminals to make mistakes before taking the law into his own hands. He will clean up the streets, and if he has to cut some corners, he'll do it without thinking twice.”

    comScore completes Rentrak merger

    Michelle Clancy | 02 February 2016

comScore has completed its merger with Rentrak in a deal that will create a cross-platform measurement company built on the analysis of audiences, brands and consumer behaviour at scale.

“This merger brings together two great entrepreneurial companies that invented their respective fields and their respective trusted currencies,” said Serge Matta, CEO of comScore. “Both have been driven to create innovative technology platforms that use massive data scale to measure increasingly fragmented consumer behaviour. Together these two principal architects of the multiscreen future will deliver the cross-platform currencies that have been demanded for so long.”

The companies’ combined data sets include digital, TV set-top box, movie screens and demographic information with the video behaviour of millions of individual consumers.

In the United States, comScore will now be measuring behaviour on more than 260 million desktop screens, 160 million mobile phone screens, 95 million tablet screens, 40 million television screens, 120 million video-on-demand screens, and 40,000 movie theatre screens, representing well over a hundred million movie-goers.

“The cross-platform world is changing rapidly and this change demands relentless inventiveness, agility, and collaborative intelligence,” added Matta. “These are qualities on which both companies have built their success. This proven ability to precisely measure extremely fragmented, dynamic audiences in dramatic, innovative ways - and to quickly report on it - has provided the insights that allow our clients to act with great competitive advantages.”
