Paramount kicks off theatre digital revenue share programme

    Michelle Clancy | 03 December 2015

Paramount Pictures has announced the home entertainment release dates of the first two films in a digital revenue-sharing initiative with theatres.

Scouts Guide to Zombies and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension debut on digital platforms for sale and rental beginning 8 and 15 December, respectively. Under the revenue-sharing agreement with select theatrical exhibitors, the films were eligible to be released on home entertainment platforms 17 days after they dipped below 300 domestic theatres, giving consumers early access to enjoy the movies at home following their theatrical runs.

Exhibitors participating in the initiative — including AMC Theatres, Cineplex Entertainment, National Amusements, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Southern Theatres and Landmark Cinemas — will receive a percentage of any of the studio's digital revenue for the period of digital availability through 90 days from the initial US theatrical release, with each exhibitor's share proportional to its theatrical gross market share.

"This innovative agreement with exhibitors enables us to make these two films available to home viewers much earlier than usual, following their natural lifecycle in theatres," said Megan Colligan, president, Worldwide Distribution and Marketing, Paramount Pictures. "This flexible distribution model allows us to maximise the revenue potential of these films, satisfy consumer demand through legitimate digital access, while respecting and preserving an exclusive theatrical window."

    Arianespace to launch Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38

Azercosmos and Intelsat have chosen Arianespace to launch the Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 telecommunication satellite.

The satellite will be launched by an Ariane 5 launch vehicle from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana.

“Arianespace is honored to continue its longstanding partnership with Intelsat and be selected again by Azercosmos for the launch of its second satellite, following the success of Azerspace/Africasat-1A on 7 February 2013. This contract will give us the opportunity to implement a tailor made launch solution that complies with both Azercosmos and Intelsat requirements, hence demonstrating our capability to address the needs of both regional and global satellite operators worldwide,” said Stéphane
Israël, chairman and CEO of Arianespace.

Expected to launch in 2017, Azerspace-2 will be Azercosmos’ second telecommunications satellite, and will expand on the current capacity of Azerspace-1. It will support growing demand for Direct-to-Home (DTH), government, and network services in Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

For Intelsat, the satellite will provide continuity of service for the Intelsat 12 satellite currently stationed at 45 degrees East, an orbital location which hosts DTH platforms for Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

“This new satellite will provide Azercosmos with additional capacity for the increasing demand in the region, and will allow us to continue to bring the best service to our customers,” stated Rashad Nabiyev, chairman and Chief CEO of Azercosmos. “We are pleased to collaborate with two world leaders in the satellite industry.”

“In today’s competitive environment, fast and reliable access to space is an absolute imperative,” said Thierry Guillemin, EVP and CTO of Intelsat. “Arianespace has a long and proven track record of executing against its launch manifest and we look forward to partnering with them once again to ensure the reliable delivery of the Azercosmos 2/Intelsat38 satellite into orbit in 2017.”

Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 will be designed and built by Space Systems/Loral. The satellite design is based on the 1300 satellite platform that provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances.

CSA holds public hearings on DTT channels

The French media authority CSA is holding public hearings om the request to turn LCI, Paris Première and Planète+ into free-to-air channels.

The Conseil supérieur de l’audiovisuel is holding the hearings today, December 3 and Friday, December 4. The CSA also invited stake holders to submit written opinions before December 11, and might be holding a third day of hearings on December 10.

The hearings follow the publication of three reports that indicate the consequences in the market when the three channels will end encryption on the country’s DTT platform, which is called TNT in France.

The broadcasters are seeking to end encryption as the low-pay model does not work for digital terrestrial distribution. However, other FTA broadcasters are afraid that an increase in the number of freely available channels might impact their revenue.

An earlier request to go FTA from the broadcasters was denied by the CSA, but the French Council of State annulled this ruling. As a result, the channels were able to resubmit a new request to CSA.

Arris expects to close the $2.1 billion transaction in early January 2016 following the Brazilian clearance becoming final and the sanctioning of the scheme of arrangement by the Companies Court in the UK.

    Amino back on track

Amino says it’s trading in line with its revised market expectations following October’s profit warning.

The Cambridge tech firm has now restructured its sales team following problems within its core business. It’s brought in Steve McKay, who led Entone’s international expansion and successfully secured a number of Tier 2 customers, including Cincinnati Bell, in his former role as CEO of Entone Inc.

Entone was acquired by Amino in July this year, following May’s purchase of Booxmedia. The Entone acquisition is expected to drive significant cost synergies and the integration of teams and product lines of each acquired company is on schedule.

Amino says it now has a better sales focus in all key regions, with dedicated teams for Latin America and Europe and a new combined sales team for North America.

Eastern Europe has been more challenging, with the potential consolidation of a major South Eastern European customer impacting further roll out of their IPTV solution.
