Households with streaming media devices watch more video

    Michelle Clancy | 08 October 2015

Households with a streaming media device hooked up to the TV watch more online video content than households without them.

According to data from Parks Associates, households with an active streaming media device, like Apple TV, Roku (which just launched the Roku 4) or Chromecast, watch an average of 22 hours of video on television per week. That's a four hours more than households without a streaming device, which clock in at just 18 hours per week on average.

The study found that owners of streaming media devices consume more online video across the board, watching an average of six hours of streaming internet video per week. They also watch only eight hours of broadcast television per week, compared to ten hours per week for non-owners. This isn't a surprising finding, but it's one that pay-TV and linear providers need to think about going forward.

"Adoption of streaming devices, combined with an increasing supply of OTT options, has altered the video environment, demanding new business models in advertising, content creation, and video subscriptions," said Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks Associates.

Consumers without streaming media devices consume about half as much streaming content, coming in at just three hours of Web video per week.

ESPN's AL Wild Card Game sets ratings records

    Michelle Clancy | 08 October 2015

ESPN’s American League Wild Card telecast was the highest rated MLB Wild Card Game ever.

The baseball showdown, which saw the Houston Astros defeat the New York Yankees 3-0, delivered a 5.7 overnight rating, making it also the highest rated MLB game on ESPN in 12 years, according to Nielsen.

It was significant as well because Jessica Mendoza made history during the telecast by becoming the first female analyst for a nationally televised MLB playoff game. After the game, her scorecard was collected for inclusion to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. She called the game alongside Dan Shulman, John Kruk and Buster Olney with Tampa Bay Rays star Chris Archer.

Additionally, it generated the largest audience for an MLB game ever on WatchESPN, setting records across metrics, including 445,000 unique viewers, an average minute audience of 127,000 viewers, and 25.7 million total minutes viewed across devices.

ESPN's digital properties continue to grow in the double-digits in terms of viewership.

iZotope debuts RX Post Production suite

    Michelle Clancy | 08 October 2015

Production technology firm iZotope has released its RX Post Production Suite.

The suite of tools is designed specifically to enable post-production professionals to better edit, mix and deliver their audio for film, broadcast, video and new media. The flagship product in the suite is the RX 5 Audio Editor, a significant update to iZotope's RX audio repair platform .

The RX Post Production Suite contains products aimed at every stage of the audio post-production workflow, with tools for everything from audio repair and editing to mix enhancement and final delivery.

The new RX 5 Audio Editor and RX 5 Advanced Audio Editor repair and enhance problematic production audio while speeding up workflows that currently require either multiple manual editing passes, or a non-intuitive collection of tools from different vendors.

RX 5 Audio Editor's new Instant Process tool lets editors 'paint out' unwanted sonic elements directly on the spectral display with a single mouse gesture. The new Module Chain allows users to define a custom chain of processing (eg de-click, de-noise, de-reverb, EQ match, leveller, normalise) and then save that chain as a preset so that multiple processes can be recalled and applied in a single click for repetitive tasks.

"Module Chains mean no more printing whole tracks back to Pro Tools. Now, I can recall a chain every time I'm faced with the same location and apply it on a case-by-case basis," said Damian Kearns, sound editor and mixer (PBS Frontline, FIFA World Cup). "So much more precise than a blanket fix and so time-saving when dealing with series work."

In RX 5 Advanced Audio Editor, a new de-plosive module minimises plosives from letters such as p, t, k, and b, in which strong blasts of air create a pressure change at the microphone element, impairing the sound. In addition, the leveller module has been enhanced with breath and 'ess' (sibilance) detection for increased accuracy when performing faster than real-time levelling. Likewise, new enhancements for the Ambience Match module improve accuracy for creating noise profiles when matching background noise to mask edit points. Ambience Match is now also available as an AudioSuite plug-in for constructing consistent ambience beds under constructed sentences and ADR lines directly from within Pro Tools and Media Composer.

    Discovery launches TLC in Turkey

Discovery Communications will launch TLC in Turkey, following the successful acquisition of the Turkish national free to air entertainment channel CNBC-e from Dogus Media Group.

Launching this November, the new channel will replace CNBC-e and showcase the best in high-quality non-scripted and scripted international entertainment.

“Today marks a new era in our Turkish business, as we close our deal with Dogus Media Group to acquire CNBC-e and announce the launch of TLC – Discovery’s leading lifestyle and entertainment channel brand and first free to air channel in the growing Turkish market,” said James Gibbons, EVP and country manager, Emerging Business, Discovery Networks CEEMEA (pictured).

    James Gibbons

“Discovery successfully runs both Pay-TV and free to air platforms in a number of markets across Europe, and TLC Turkey will offer a diverse mix of content that adds value to our existing strong portfolio, including dedicated feeds for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Science. TLC is the channel Turkey has been waiting for and we look forward to presenting it to viewers and our commercial partners this November.”

Dogus Media Group’s chairman Erman Yerdelen said: “As Dogus Media Group, we believe Discovery Communications will introduce the Turkish market to a totally new channel, reflecting the latest trends in various types of entertainment under a very strong brand like TLC. Thanks to its strong and diverse programming schedule, we are sure that Turkish viewers will be addicted to TLC Turkey and it will be the leading channel in its genre. We look forward to working alongside Discovery on future projects and offering even more surprises for Turkish viewers.”

Today’s completion of the acquisition of CNBC-e by Discovery Communications marks the passage to the next stage in its strategic relationship with Dogus Media Group, as announced earlier this year , to expand its channel portfolio in Turkey, strengthen its ad sales offer and reinforce its position as the leading international broadcaster in the region.

Dogus were recently appointed as Discovery’s exclusive ad sales representative in Turkey, tasked, under the leadership of James Gibbons in London and Sissian Margos (General Manger, Discovery Networks Turkey) in Istanbul, to sell Discovery’s commercial portfolio, which with the addition of TLC now consists of four channels, including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery Science.

    Funding crunch for RT

The budget for RT (former Russia Today) will amount to R19 billion (€271 million) in 2016, or R1.84 billion less than this year.

According to Vedomosti, RT initially received R15.38 billion this year from the state, with a subsequent top up of R5.45 billion to make up for the sharp fall in the ruble exchange rate.

However, quoting the broadcaster’s chief editor Margarita Simonyan, it adds that this could not cover its running costs, given that 80% were in foreign currencies.

RT’s budget this year was increased by only 30% and reducing subsidies next year will only worsen its already difficult financial position, which has already resulted in the indefinite postponement of TV channels in France and Germany.

Significantly, RT will not be the only Russian broadcaster to see a reduction in its state subsidy in 2016, with Channel One’s set to fall by R3.5 billion.

On the other hand, VGTRK (RTR) and Gazprom-Media will see increases, in the latter instance to help with the distribution of its new sports channel Match TV.

Overall, state subsidies for media, which include the TASS news agency, will fall by R1.1 billion to R80.2 billion in 2016.

    Russian cableco eyes major acquisition

The Russian cable operator ER Telecom is in talks to buy Enforta, one of the country’s leading providers of B2B fixed wireless access.

Quoting unnamed market participants, Kommersant reports that negotiations between the two parties are at an early stage. It also says that the initiator behind a possible transaction could be Baring Vostok Capital Partners, which has stakes in both companies.

ER Telecom, which provides broadband and pay-TV services under the brand name Dom.ru in 56 cities throughout Russia, aims to double the size of its business in the next five years. It also plans an IPO aimed at raising $500 million for the company.

Meanwhile, Enforta provides wireless internet access in 442 locations in 69 regions throughout Russia.

Buying Enforta could cost ER Telecom in the region of $87.5 million at current exchange rates.

Leading Portuguese channels face carriage fee loss

Popular entertainment channels RTP. SIC and TVI are in dispute with the new owners of Portuguese cablenet MEO over carriage payments.

Correio da Manha reports the three channels have sent a joint letter to media regulator Entidade Reguladora para a Comunicação Social after being told by MEO’s new owners Altice that payments would cease when their current contracts expire at the end of the year.

The companies current receive an annual payment of €6 million.

It’s understood the regulator has previously held separate and combined talks with the channels concerned.

techUK Calls for BBC remit to support tech

The body representing the UK’s technical sector has called on the BBC to be given a remit to support the UK tech industry.

In its response to the Department for Culture, Media and Sports consultation into the BBC charter review, techUK says decision taken by the BBC with regards to technology roadmaps and distribution methods not only have an impact on the cost of devices and services enjoyed by UK consumers, but on the competitiveness and sustainability of the UK technology sector itself.

It says a similar remit to that already held by the BBC when it comes to the creative industries should be included for the tech economy.

Paul Hide, Director of Operations at techUK, said: “The BBC has played a leading role in the UK and global content creation, broadcast and distribution markets. It’s vital that it retains the funding needed to effectively support the UK’s thriving tech and media industries.”

techUK’s key recommendations for the Charter are:
•The BBC must remain an independent producer and broadcaster of content and services.
•The BBC should continue to focus on the 6 public purposes under which it currently operates.
•Just as the BBC has a remit to support the UK creative economy, a similar such remit for the tech economy must be included in the new Charter.
•It is important that BBC continues to be funded in a sufficiently stable, secure and transparent way.
•The period of Charter must allow sufficient visibility and security of funding to enable longer term investment planning.
