Veteran American actors adapt Korean travel format for NBC

    Fay Sutton | 24 August 2015

Four American actors - Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Terry Bradshaw and George Foreman - have been filming a new travel show for NBC based on CJ E&M's hit reality series Grandpas over Flowers.

For the show, entitled Better Late than Never, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the veteran actors will go backpacking across Asia, making stops at places including Korea, Japan and Hong Kong over the next month.

Last September, the format of Grandpas over Flowers was sold to NBC, making the show the first unscripted Korean format to be adapted by an American broadcast company.

Seo Jang-Ho, head of international sales and acquisitions at CJ E&M, said: "We are thrilled to welcome those four honourable actors and their filming in Korea. We cannot wait to see how CJ E&M's originality and creativeness gets adapted into an American version. We're dedicated to producing content that is attractive to a more global audience."

Initially aired in 2013, Grandpas over Flowers is a travel-themed reality show, starring veteran actors in their 70s who visit various destinations. It spawned two successful spin-off series: Sisters over Flowers and Youth over Flowers.

Hispasat, NEC provide video connectivity to Colombia

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 25 August 2015

Aiming to reduce the digital divide across Colombia as a part of the public project Kioscos Vive Digital, Hispasat and NEC are to provide universal connectivity services via satellite in rural and remote areas of the country.

vivedigitalTaking those living in the largest cities into the digital era and opening new opportunities for over-the-top (OTT) services, the project comes from a joint venture between the two companies, who in December 2013 won the government bid to install, operate and manage 648 digital kiosks in seven provinces.

The current project is the second stage of the Kioscos Vive Digital initiative, which aims to ensure 100% of towns with over 100 inhabitants in Colombia have at least one communal Internet access point. So far, the Amazonas, Boyacá, Caldas, Cundinamarca, Guainía, Risaralda and Vaupés provinces have been given access to the Internet, national and international telephone services, among many other services.

"With Kiosco Vive Digital, we want to show how we provide Internet services in remote areas, as part of our strong commitment to bring technology to the lives of every Colombian," said Luis Fernando Lozano, director of connectivity and leader of the optical fibre and connectivity projects in Colombia. "Today we have 6,668 Kioscos Vive Digital buildings that already benefit and train Colombian farmers".

Elena Pisonero, Hispasat's president, commented: "Satellites are a very important infrastructure in countries where the land networks are less extended and there are still regions that do not have access to the information society."

Also in Colombia, Hispasat is providing satellite connection for video and voice to the Ruta BBVA organisation, formerly Ruta Quetzal.

La Liga bans Mediaset from entering football stadiums

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 25 August 2015

In a year that has seen great changes to football broadcasting rights in the Spanish pay-TV sector, La Liga has banned Mediaset from filming inside football stadiums because of its opposition to the former's agreement with free-to-air (FTA) networks which favours the public broadcaster RTVE.

RTVE has access to extended recaps and highlights of every game, while the other free-to-air (FTA) groups can broadcast restricted material. La Liga has also decided to allow FTA networks to film their own videos with a 90-second time limit.

Although most groups disagree with the La Liga-RTVE agreement, only Mediaset has publicly stated its opposition and issued a formal complaint. Following this, when cameras from Mediaset's Cuatro and Telecinco tried to enter the stadiums during the first weekend of the football competition, they weren't allowed in.

Mediaset commented that "giving exclusivity over La Liga's recaps to RTVE limits the right to information for the other networks".

La Liga say it has no issue with Mediaset, but intends to keep the football broadcasts within its own rules saying RTVE has exclusivity because it presented the highest bid.

Alcatel-Lucent, Telefonica upgrade Canary Islands cables

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez| 25 August 2015

Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks and Telefónica are improving connectivity between the Spanish mainland and Gran Canarias and Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, by upgrading the PENCAN-7 and PENCAN-8 undersea cable systems.

The 100Gbit/s upgrade will offer a more than ten-fold increase of the current system capacity to meet the growing demand for broadband-related services like over-the-top (OTT) video and connectivity.

The PENCAN-7 and PENCAN-8 systems, which are both 1,400km in length, are part of the Telefonica PENCAN network which links the Iberian Peninsula with the islands. The network, which comprises four geographically diversified, fibre optics submarine cables, enables Telefonica to provide any kind of ultra-broadband robust services between Canary Islands and the rest of the Spain.

"PENCAN Submarine Cable Systems have a proven track record of operational excellence based on optimum network performance and further scalability via seamless upgrades," said Maria Jesus Almazor, regional director for Southern Spain at Telefónica. "The additional capacity available with ASN's advanced technology will contribute significantly in meeting the ongoing demand in the markets served by these Systems."

The agreement between Alcatel-Lucent and Telefónica is a step forward in the international partnership between both companies.
"We are pleased to support Telefónica in their expansion of connectivity between the Spanish mainland and the Canary Islands, enabling the expansion of capacity to boost broadband traffic," added Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks. "ASN's unique submarine technology provides operators like Telefónica with an easy upgrade path and scalability to multi-terabit capacity, with staged migration combining technological and economic benefits".

DTT increases reach in South Africa

    Rebecca Hawkes 25 August 2015

South Africa's digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) system has grown to cover 84.46% of the population and provide 58.49% geographic coverage, after two greenfield sites went live in Harrismith, Free State and Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape.

The switching on of these new greenfield sites supports the existing 178 DTT migration transmitters, which were turned on by state-owned signal distributor Sentech in March 2015.

"Although the two sites are similar, the terrain and circumstance are vastly different and every site posed its own unique challenges. With all the different disciplines that are involved with completing these sites, team work remains the cornerstone for achievement and the dependencies that each has on the final outcome. With all the experience gained over the last 18 months on these two sites, one become much more equipped to manage the outstanding greenfield sites," said Nicolaas Jobse, DTT project manager, Sentech.

Two more greenfield sites – Burgersfort in Limpopo and Holy Cross in the Eastern Cape – are being built to ensure maximum digital TV coverage in remote areas.

The last two greenfield sites are expected to be on air by March 2016, raising the population coverage to 85.20% and geographical coverage to 58.91%.
