Massive piracy for Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer

VPN users are raiding content sites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer, according to the Global Web Index.

A significant percentages of VPN users in countries such as China, India and Indonesia are accessing services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer (see chart below).

By connecting via one of these tools, internet users are bypassing geo-restrictions which would typically limit the content in question to individuals based in the USA or UK.

Other countries with large numbers of people accessing iPlayer without paying for subscriptions include the United States, India, Brazil, Russia and Germany. A total of 63.4m are using the BBC streaming service via VPN, said Global Web Index.

Vice wins appeal on UK VOD requirements

UK regulator Ofcom has overruled on appeal the decision by the Authority for Television on Demand for VOD content to hold Vice UK liable to statutory requirements for VOD services.

Atvod) had ruled that Vice needed a licence to public its videos in the UK, but now Ofcom said that since Vice’s HQ is in US it falls outside British jurisdiction.

Vice’s final editorial control is in America and because its parent company is incorporated in the US, Vice lies outside of British control, according to Ofcom.

    Spain takes to 5-play

The take-up of quintuple play services, including pay-TV, is growing rapidly in Spain.

Data published by the regulator CNMC shows that nearly one in five (19.5%) homes with landline telecom packages already opted for such services in the second quarter of 2014, or just over a year ago.

This compared to only 5.9% in Q2 2013 and it is probably safe to assume that last year’s figure is today much higher.

The data also showed that ARPU for quintuple services was €51.6 a year ago, which in turn was over six times the ARPU for triple play services as of the end of 2013.

ProSiebenSat.1’s digital subsidiary 7NXT now holds 57% of the shares; financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

We look forward to our partnership with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) through which we want to increase popularity of Olympic and non-Olympic sports.”

Rapid growth for OTT TV in Germany and Austria

Connected television in Germany and Austria has now passed the threshold into rapid and sustained growth, qaccording to a new report by Deadline Media.

The total number of sVoD subscriber grew by 46% in the first six months of 2015. This is without any noticeable cord cutting.

“The primary challenge of OTT TV is to advertising-funded broadcasters as the market becomes increasingly dominated by big US internet platforms, notably Google,” said Roger Stanyard, author of the report Connected TV in Germany and Austria.

“We believe that the advertising-funded broadcasters are now living on borrowed time, despite an expected increase in advertising revenues of 1.9-2.8% in 2015.”

Conventional linear scheduled low and premium pay television will continue to grow in importance, not least because Sky Deutschland has hedged its bets against online delivery of content. Germans are now rapidly taking pay television. Subscriptions to pay-TV are currently growing at 12% a year.

Neither German nor Austrian broadcasters can, any longer, rely on the peculiarities of their domestic markets to protect them from the winds of change. That is the internationalisation of television led by immensely powerful global players. It is a matter of deep political concern at the highest political levels in Germany and the European Union.

Connected Television in Germany and Austria shows that Amazon Prime Instant Video is currently market leader in the sVoD market place with 1,234,000 subscribers as at end of June 2015. Maxdome and Netflix were level pegging, each with 600,000 subscribers and Watchever with around 100,000.

The total number of sVoD subscriber grew by a very healthy 46% in the first six months of 2015.

Catchup TV (using HbbTV) has undoubtedly been a big success in Germany and Austria but its use by the average consumer is generally below that seen in other Western countries.
Some 16% of consumers used it within the last week compared to 26% in the USA, 36% in France and 48% in the UK.

The OTT TV environment in Germany and Austria is now very benign. By year-end 2015 58% of households are expected to own a smart TV by the end of 2015. At least 75% of these are expected to be connected to broadband, cheap streaming media dongles and boxes also make physical connection an irrelevant issue.

More information about the report Connected TV in Germany and Austria. can be downloaded from our website; the report can also be ordered from the Broadband TV News webshop.

Glashart Media adds Videoland VOD to its apps

Dutch IPTV provider Glashart Media has added direct access to the Videoland VOD service to its Android and iOS apps.

Customers can now access content from the Videoland library directly on the app and choose on whichever screen they want to view the TV series and movies.

Dutch developer Stoneroos has combined its EPGdata.tv product with the on demand catalogue, making it an even more complete solution.

The app is a white label product from Stoneroos; the TV Companion App. With the smooth navigation and the clear and bright design it’s very easy for users to find their favourite film or series and play it on the TV. Previously, it was only possible to search for films and series on the interface of the TV itself.

Apart from the app, all Glashart Media products use the enriched EPGdata of Stoneroos, which includes services and products such as images, social media links and other relevant information.

With the addition of the VOD library in the apps, the cooperation between Glashart Media and Stoneroos has extended even further and made the app even more complete.

Discovery to take full control of Eurosport

Discovery Communications has agreed to acquire full ownership of Eurosport, paying TFI Group €491 million for a 49% stake in the sports broadcaster.

Commenting on the development, David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications, said: “Discovery Communications is excited to expand and deepen our investment in Eurosport as we continue to strengthen our newest global brand with locally relevant sports rights that create value for fans, advertisers and distributors.

“In 2012, we began our investment with a 20% stake in Eurosport and increased that investment to 51% more than a year ago. Taking full control of Eurosport is the culmination of our commitment to strengthening Eurosport as a premier sports brand and fully integrating this business within Discovery’s unmatched global portfolio. I would like to thank TF1 for being great partners to us on this journey for the past few years.”

Nonce Paolini, chairman and CEO of TF1, added: “We are delighted by the excellent relationship between Discovery and TF1 since we began our partnership in 2012.

“After an initial phase of creating value via acquisitions of equity stakes, which accelerated the development of Eurosport and the theme channels, we intend to continue our collaboration in the years ahead.”

The agreement also includes a provision for TF1 to buy back Discovery’s 20% interest in TV Breizh, Histoire, and Ushuaïa TV for €15 million, with both transactions expected to close at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Discovery and Eurosport have acquired more than 7,500 hours of coverage, over 3,300 of it live, since May 2014.

In June, they won the TV and multiplatform rights for the Olympic Games from 2018 to 2024.
