    Amino snaps up Entone

Amino Technologies is to acquire the cloud TV company Entone in a deal worth £46.7 million.

The Cambridge-based IPTV and multimedia distribution company says the purchase of the company, which it saw as a direct competitor would bring with it cost synergies, supply chain enhancement and economies of scale.

It’s the second recent acquisition for Amino, which earlier this year bought the Finnish venture Booxmedia.

“Our financial strength is allowing us to be bolder in our plans for growth. Our acquisition of Booxmedia Oy extended our credibility in customers’ eyes as an innovator in the TV space. Today’s proposed acquisition of Entone takes that credibility one step further still, not only adding excellent product and people to our offering, but transforming the scale of our business too. We enter the second half confidently and are excited by the long-term potential for a bigger, bolder Amino.”

“Bringing together Amino and Entone would create a significant new presence in the pay-TV market with solutions and skillsets that are highly complementary. We share a very similar vision as to how our industry is changing and the kinds of solutions will best help our customers be successful,” added Entone CEO Steve McKay.

Subject to the traditional regulatory approvals the transaction can be expected to complete in the third quarter of 2015.

Announcing its interim results, Amino said strong sales in North America had helped revenues climb by 9% to £17.9 million. Gross profit grew 23% to £9.1 million.

FilmOn can be treated like cable

A US Federal Court judge has ruled that the FilmOn streaming service is entitled to a so-called ‘compulsory licence’ that would force broadcasters to sell their programming at a discounted rate.

The ruling by District Court Judge George Wu would require the controversial platform to be treated as if it were a cable service. This a repeat of the Aereo argument almost 12 months to the day.

Aereo streamed its service to a string of micro antennas leased to its subscribers. It failed to convince a court that it should be given similar treatment to that now afforded to FilmOn and was forced to declare bankruptcy.

Judge Wu immediately gave leave to appeal and left the preliminary injunction held by broadcasters against FilmOn in place until the appeal could be decided.
Broadcasters, including the four major networks, had sued FilmOn for copyright infringement.

    Moscow HD take-up grows

MTS-owned Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS) saw its HD subscriber total increase 3.5 times in the last 12 months.

As of the beginning of this month, 35% of its digital TV customers received TV channels in the format, up from 10% in July 2014.

Its most popular HD packages – ‘Nothing in excess’ and ‘Clear HD’ – both offered over 20 channels and were received by 30% of all MGTS subscribers.

Meanwhile, the number of subscribers to 11 thematic packages with HD channels doubled in the last year.

The most popular channels were Channel One HD, Sport 1HD and Rossiya HD.

The significant increase in HD take-up is attributed to the fibre-optic network in Moscow, which now covers over 3.5 million households.

    MTG swims against the tide

MTG has been able to maintain increases in sales and profits, despite currency effects on content costs for the Stockholm-based company, and the changing nature of the broadcast market.

Subscriber bases for the online service Viaplay have increased across the Nordic region, while traditional channel operation Trace has grown across its international markets.

MTG made sales of SEK 4,155 million (€444.24m), up from SEK 4,109 million.

The rate of decline in linear viewing in Scandinavia – where MTG runs the TV3 and Viasat brands – slowed in the quarter. Advertising rates have continued to rise across all markets and digital sales grew by 30%.

Ongoing growth in the Viaplay and IPTV subscriber bases more than offset the decline in the cable and satellite base.

In the emerging markets the ongoing situation in the Ukraine led to further decline in the satellite pay-TV platform. Further amendments to the Russian Mass Media law have done nothing to ease the uncertainty for businesses in the region.

Vimeo's Oscar's Hotel for Fantastical Creatures taps Jim Henson Co

    Michelle Clancy | 22 July 2015

New Form Digital has sealed a creative collaboration with the Jim Henson Company for a new Vimeo series.

New Form's series, Oscar's Hotel for Fantastical Creatures, will appear on Vimeo On Demand on 15 September. Jim Henson's Creature Shop will bring the namesake creatures to life from fantastical puppets, elaborate, key costume pieces and prosthetics.
"When hotel owner Oscar suddenly leaves on unexpected cosmic council business, his nephew Oliver must become the new proprietor and his attempts to maintain order lead him to surreal adventures with its eccentric guests," the online video company explained in the series description.
Voice actors include Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina and Elliott Gould.
"PJ Liguori is a very unique storyteller. We're very proud to work with him and this amazing cast, in partnership with Jim Henson's Creature Shop, on Oscar's Hotel," said Kathleen Grace, chief creative officer for New Form. "The series embodies what New Form is all about – building creators' visions into premium scripted originals."
"PJ's original creatures demonstrated a quirky and irreverent style, so it was a fun challenge to create new characters that would naturally fit and populate Oscar's Hotel," said Peter Brooke, creative supervisor of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

FOX News hooks up Quicklink Skype TX

    Michelle Clancy | 22 July 2015

FOX News Channel has selected the Quicklink Skype TX solution for news poll interviews on the American election programme Fox with Friends with Former US Chief of Staff John Sununu.

The Quicklink Skype TX is a compact touchscreen 1U rack mount or desktop unit that enables professional reception or transmission of Skype calls through the SDI/HDMI interface. FOX used the Quicklink Skype TX to transmit high two-way video and audio from a remote office location back to a Quicklink Skype TX in the TV station.
One new feature for the Quicklink Skype TX solution is a network enhancer called Bondio, which bonds a combination of Internet connections, such as DSL connections, together. This allows broadcasters to use the solution even when they have lossy networks.

Rocketing quint-play arrives in fifth of Spanish homes

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 22 July 2015

Fixed phone, broadband, mobile phone and mobile data, and pay-TV: almost 20% of the Spanish population have already decided to subscribe to every telecom service at home with a single operator, making 2014 the year of quintuple-play growth and consolidation in Spain.

According to the latest figures published by Spain's Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), the market share of homes with quintuple play
packages has grown by 300% compared to 2013, when the service was almost non-existent.

However, double- and triple-play services have seen a fall in numbers, with the triple-play option without mobile services being the least used package, only chosen by 1.9%.

Figures from 2014 showed that quad- and quint-play packages have more than eight million subscribers across Spain, driving pay-TV, which is the business which has benefited most among the telecom services.

With more packaged services comes more expense, with the average price for quint-play being over €56.10 per month per family and quadruple play costing €38.10.

Still, despite there being an official definition from the CNMC, there is controversy regarding what quintuple-play packages actually comprise, as Spain's largest telco, Telefónica, announced in May the launch of the first 'real' quint-play offer including home security and smart-home features.

Discovery brings back Spanish-language Texas Trocas

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 22 July 2015

Discovery en Espanol's most-watched original series in 2014, Texas Rocas, will be back on the network on 3 August airing as part of the Lunes de Motores programming block.

Hitting Hispanics and Spanish-speaking audiences across the US and Latin America, the second season of Texas Trocas, featuring the Mexican-American Mendez family from South Texas, will see the expansion of their shop.

"Everything viewers see on Texas Trocas is 100% real, from the new extreme truck and vehicle renovations to dealing with stressed out clients to, of course, the drama that is part of any family business," said Rolando Mendez, the primary creative force of the family. "But what counts in the end is that we all love each other; we all want to keep growing the business and we work together to get ahead."

For the Mendez family, the possibilities around the world of trucks are truly limitless. This new season brings new and bigger challenges ranging from refurbishing the exclusive vehicle belonging to Ricky Munoz, lead singer of the popular Tejano music group Intocable, to the competition between Raul and Rolando to see who can create the most stunning truck design.

Cate Blanchett to develop, direct TV show in Australia

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 22 July 2015

Screen Australia has given the green light to fund Cate Blanchett's high-end TV project Stateless, as one of 23 films and TV shows in which the federal funding body plans to invest AUS$640,000.

Stateless, which is Blanchett's TV development and directorial debut, centres on the tragic story of Cornelia Rau, which hit the headlines in 2004. The young German/Australian woman escaped a disturbing cult only to be trapped in a labyrinth of psychiatric and legal systems, ending up in the notorious Baxter Immigration Detention Centre. It will be produced by Matchbox Pictures.

The cult is also the subject matter of Trust – a drama based on a journalist's mission to expose a movement clouded by conspiracy theories and deception.

Screen Australia will also fund a number of supernatural themes – including zombie thriller Cargo from Kristina Ceyton, UFO-based Skydoor and ghost story Vanished. Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward are also set to collaborate in a movie of Randolph Stow's post-apocalyptic novel Tourmaline.

Comedies The Murderous Urges of Ordinary Women, ET & Me, Flammable Children, Emo (The Musical) and Digger are also to receive funding. As will Jan Chapman and Richard Roxburgh's film Babyteeth and Death is for the Living, written by Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher.
