UK PSB spending on first-run content shows long-term decline

    DetailsEditor | 21 July 2015

Data from UK regulator Ofcom has revealed the struggles public service broadcasters (PSBs) are still facing even seven years after the credit crunch.

Ofcom's annual report examined how UK PSBs — the BBC, ITV, STV, UTV, Channel 4, S4C and Channel 5 — are delivering the public service purposes set out in the Communications Act.

It found that overall audience satisfaction remains high, with around eight in ten viewers believing PSB is delivering on its purposes and characteristics – such as trustworthy news and high quality content. Viewing to the main PSB channels — BBC One, BBC Two, ITV, UTV, STV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 — remained steady and accounted for over half of all TV viewing in 2014. Ofcom added that if the PSB's portfolio of channels, such as time shifted '+1' channels, had been taken into account, the combined viewing share of the PSB broadcasters would have accounted for almost three-quarters (72%) of all viewing.

The report also showed that the amount of, and spending on, first-run UK originated content both increased slightly in 2014 compared with 2013. Yet when looking at the long-term trend since the credit crunch first began to bite inn 2008, PSB spending on first-run UK content has fallen by around £440 million in real terms, a decline of 15%, over the seven years.

In all, the PSB channels, including the BBC portfolio channels, spent a total of £2.85 billion on all network television content in 2014. The commercial PSB channels — ITV/ITV Breakfast, Channel 4 and Channel 5 — contributed £1.49 billion, while the BBC contributed £1.36 billion.

Year-on-year, overall spend increased by 2% in real terms from the £2.79 total spend of 2013. The BBC's spend increased by 4%, £50 million in real terms, and that of the commercial PSB channels increased by £11 million (1%) over the same period. Total spend on first-run UK originated network content by the PSB channels increased by 3% in real terms to £2.52 billion from 2013 to 2014. Yet Ofcom noted that with 2014 featuring the Brazil World Cup and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the increase was predominantly driven by the 36% real term increase in first-run UK originated sport spend year-on-year.

MTG continues MCN spending spree with Zoomin.TV controlling stake

    DetailsEditor | 21 July 2015

Leading Scandinavian pay-TV provider Modern Times Group (MTG) has continued its recent spell of investments by taking a controlling stake in Zoomin.TV, one of Europe's largest online video multi-channel networks (MCNs).

The 51% controlling stake is based on an enterprise value of €88 million and comes hot on the heels of MTG's investments in esports company ESL and Scandinavian MCN and digital content creator Splay.

Founded in 2002, Zoomin is the fifth largest MCN in the world, attracting more than two billion monthly video views and 100 million subscribers worldwide on YouTube. Zoomin also has a network of 2,000 publishers, including media brands such as Yahoo, AOL, Bild and Telegraaf. Zoomin's daily production includes more than 400 premium short video clips in 18 languages and 27 categories from video journalists all around the world. Zoomin's in-house sales team sells advertising solutions on Zoomin and third-party channels in 45 territories to leading consumer brands including P&G, Philips, Volkswagen and Unilever. Zoomin has generated 36% average sales growth over the past five years, and 70% growth in 2014 alone.

Online gaming is one of Zoomin's key verticals, and it will work closely with ESL and Viagame to drive higher viewership and monetisation rates. At the same time, Splay will use Zoomin's global distribution network to promote its Web talents, while in turn providing influencer marketing tools to Zoomin and its publisher network.

Zoomin's two founders – Jan Riemens and Bram Bloemberg – will continue to drive the company's development. In a joint statement commenting on the deal, they said: "We are extremely happy to have found the right strategic partner in MTG. We wanted to team up with a company that knows the content arena inside out and that will elevate Zoomin to become an even bigger global player in the online video space. We have a proven business model for creating and monetising online video reach. Now we will accelerate our growth further by working with MTG to position ourselves as the ideal partner for video publishers looking to succeed internationally. On behalf of all our talents, partners and employees, we look forward to working with MTG."

Added MTG president and CEO Jørgen Madsen Lindemann: "This combination of global Web talent and content, massive reach amongst millennials, and proven monetisation capabilities confirms our position as a leading player in the global online video entertainment space. It is now clear that we are creating an online video ecosystem that is fully prepared to capitalise on the next steps in the evolution of social video."

VTVCab ties up with Samsung, SmarDTV to offer iDTV option

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 21 July 2015

Vietnam Cable Television (VTVCab) is working with Kudelski's SmarDTV and Samsung to offer subscribers an alternative way of receiving digital TV signals using an integrated Digital Television (iDTV).

VTVCab subscribers can enjoy pay-TV content directly on their new Samsung DVB-C iDTV by using the newly developed CI Plus Instant Access conditional access module (CAM) instead of a set-top box.

"We hugely appreciate the trust and support shown by VTVCab to promote and deploy our CAM solution. SmarDTV Instant Access modules ensure that channels are directly accessible on integrated Digital Televisions (iDTVs) using one single TV remote control and that neither extra cables nor additional power is required," said Gregory Laloy, APAC Sales Director, SmarDTV.

"We are delighted also to partner with Samsung to promote this product which has been highly successful in enabling analogue to digital migration in the Europe market."

Nam Bui, CTO, VTVCab, added: "VTVCab is pleased to work with Samsung and SmarDTV, two world leaders in the Digital TV industry. Using this integrated digital TV + CAM combination gives us more flexibility to promote our attractive content in high definition (HD) and future 4K compression".

Customers buying a Samsung DVB-C iDTV Model J5520 will get a voucher entitling them to a VTVcab CAM containing a smartcard and a free six-month subscription to the HD package. When installed, this will provide them instant access to VTVCab services.

Japanese networks join forces for streaming project

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 21 July 2015

The five leading commercial TV networks in Japan are combining their might to launch a catch-up video service called TVer this October, coinciding with Netflix's arrival to the local market.

Nippon Television Network, TV Asahi, TBS TV, TV Tokyo and Fuji Television Network will each supply TVer with ten shows a week, and each episode will be available free to viewers for seven days, thanks to advertising.

The announcement comes just weeks after a consortium of Japanese entertainment companies, broadcasters and industry bodies formed the Japan Contents Group to launch an online video-on-demand (VOD) service called Bonobo in the autumn.

As well as TVer and Netflix, Bonobo will face competition from existing over-the-top (OTT) services from Hulu, Gyao, Unext, and video services from mobile operators SoftBank, NTT Docomo and KDDI.

Amazon Prime Instant Video set to launch in India

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 21 July 2015

Amazon is set to launch its Prime Instant Video service in India this year as part of a US$5 million investment in its Indian e-commerce and subscription-based business, according to local reports.

The investment would see an increase in Amazon's online content, as well as an expansion of warehouses and data centres in India, The Economic Times reports.

The US company has employed former Sony Entertainment executive Nitesh Kripalani to lead its online video and music business in India.

The battle for subscribers to online video-on-demand (VOD) services in India looks set to intensify, with Netflix reportedly set to launch in 2016. While the country's connection speeds remain an issue, India's Internet market retains appeal and could rise to a value of $137 million by 2020, according to Morgan Stanley.

KPMG predicts that India will be home to 640 million Internet users by 2019 – many of these connected via smartphone. India's total mobile subscriber base is currently at about 970 million, according to recent figures from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), trailing only China, which has 1.27 billion mobile users.

In July 2014, Amazon India officially announced it would invest an additional $2 billion in India to expand and "enhance the customer seller experience", taking on e-commerce rivals Flipkart, Snapdeal and PayTM.

Amazon's Indian division has been operational for two years and is now worth $2 billion in gross merchandise on the e-commerce side, says The Economic Times.

    Simulmedia releases INSIGHTS ad analytics

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 21 July 2015

Simulmedia has released INSIGHTS, a self-service online portal through which clients can access reporting for their ad campaigns, request future campaign options and receive fast and interactive results.

The online application is the latest extension of VAMOS, Simulmedia's platform for campaign optimisation, execution and reporting.

INSIGHTS gives marketers information about both the campaign they ran with Simulmedia , and what they've done in other TV media. Different screens report on media delivery as well as business outcomes.

In its first version, INSIGHTS will be used for clients in the tune-in space, for whom Simulmedia shows who tuned into a programme, after being exposed to a promo for that episode. Additional analytics include conversions by network, day part and creative, as well as competitive share information and details on where viewers were before and after a given show.

"INSIGHTS lets marketers directly interact with their own reporting, and is a first step along the path towards fully-automated self-service through Simulmedia's platform," said Dave Morgan, Simulmedia's founder and CEO. "Starting with TV marketers, who need to acquire and retain viewers every week and value immediacy in results, is a great launching pad, and will prepare us for our general market interface as well."

YouNow reaches 1,000 broadcasters for online video platform

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 21 July 2015

YouNow has said that the number of paid broadcasters on its live online TV platform has now reached 1,000.

"With over 100 million user sessions a month, and 50,000 hours of new original video content created each day, we are enabling performers to earn real money on YouNow said founder and CEO Adi Sideman. "They are turning their phones or laptops into a stage, and perform to large audiences. We have hundreds of thousands of creators and an audience of millions that supports them directly. We are proud that creators can make a living on YouNow doing what they love."

YouNow is designed to encourage audiences to reward their favourite performers directly, in real time, though virtual goods. The performers chat and interact with their fans during the broadcasts, and performers then receive the lion's share of the dollar value of those virtual goods.

On average, a daily user of YouNow spends 51 minutes per day on the online video platform, the company said — and US Internet users in 2014 spend more time on YouNow per day than on social media such as Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Snapchat, Tinder or LinkedIn.

    Programmatic ad spend tops $10BN

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 21 July 2015

Programmatic buying and selling of online display-related advertising generated $10.1 billion in 2014, comprising a fifth of last year's overall Internet advertising revenues ($49.5 billion).

That's according to the IAB Programmatic Revenue Report, prepared by PwC US, which found that programmatic advertising made up approximately 52% of display-related advertising in 2014 ($19.6 billion), while non-programmatic display-related revenues accounted for the remaining 48% at $9.4 billion.

"Over the last several years, publishers and advertisers have increasingly adopted programmatic buying and selling of digital inventory into their media strategies," said David Silverman, partner at PwC US. "This in-depth study reflects that growing trend, but in addition to pointing to where programmatic is today, we also look at where real-time bidding could be tomorrow."

Open auctions made up approximately 70% of the online video programmatic revenue in 2014, and the report discusses marketplace indicators that point to a shift in the next few years to other programmatic transaction types, such as private auctions, unreserved fixed rate or automated guaranteed methods.

Display banner ads made up approximately 80% of programmatic revenues in 2014, but the findings demonstrate that mobile and video formats will take more of advertiser and publisher budgets and inventory over time.

Ad tech companies received approximately 55% of programmatic revenues, while publishers garnered approximately 45% of programmatic revenues in 2014.

"Sizing the programmatic market has proven both challenging and illuminating, as we learned more about how that sector moves ads and money," said Sherrill Mane, SVP of research, analytics and measurement at IAB. "Once we garner deeper understanding of how things work and where standard definitions and best practices are needed, we will also gain insights into where greater opportunities exist for publishers and advertisers to capitalize on programmatic channels."
