    Spanish broadcasters under investigation

The Spanish regulator CNMC has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the broadcasters Mediaset and Atresmedia.

In each instance, they relate to exceeding the permitted limits of airtime allowed for advertising on their channels – Telecinco and Cuatro in the case of Mediaset and Antena 3 for Atresmedia – as stipulated in the General Law on Audiovisual Communication (LGCA).

The alleged offences took place in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The proceedings can last a maximum of six months and both broadcasters have 15 days to submit comments.

    Telekom falls behind in Romania

RCS&RDS and UPC have attracted the lion’s share of new fixed line broadband internet subscribers in Romania in the last two years.

Quoting its analysis, based on data published by the regulator ANCOM, ZF reports that RCS&RDS accounted for nearly half (47%) of such subscribers over the period, thereby further strengthening its market position.

Meanwhile, UPC claimed 20% and Telekom Romania (formerly known as Romtelecom) only 7%, with the remainder been shared out among smaller players.

It adds that UPC has invested heavily in infrastructure, allowing it to add 100,000 to its broadband subscriber total in the last two years.

This figure was over three times the number secured by Telekom

Continued doubts over Telekom Slovenije sale

Although the Telekom Slovenije privatisation process is in its final stages, it is by no means a forgone conclusion.

Dnevnik reports that despite recent media reports, the only thing that appears to have happened in the last two weeks is that Cinven has changed its offer for the telco.

Having initially bid €112 a share back in April, it is believed to have increased the figure to €130.

Cinven is the only bidder for the 75% stake, which is being sold by the Slovenian National Holding Company (SDH).

The privatisation process has been ongoing for a year and the decision to sell to Cinven will ultimately rest with the government and could come as soon as the end this month.

As reported earlier this week in Broadband TV News, Slovenia’s finance minister has played down reports that Cinven is working in concert with Deutsche Telekom to reduce the price for Telekom Slovenije.

Raduga TV operator set for bankruptcy

The Moscow Arbitration Court has received an application from DalGeoKom, the former operator of the DTH platform Raduga TV, to declare it insolvent.

According to Comnews, the process would be done under a simplified procedure on June 30, with the court considering the introduction of debtor bankruptcy proceedings on the same day.

Although DalGeoKom previously filed for bankruptcy on March 12, its application was not accompanied by necessary documentation.

The debtor will now be required to provide the court with numerous details.

Raduga TV, which was 50% owned by Modern Times Group (MTG), ceased operations at the end of last year after having failed to obtain the necessary licence.

BT Vision gets new iPlayer version

The BBC has upgraded the version of the iPlayer used by the old BT Vision set-top box.

Peter Lasko, senior product manager, BBC iPlayer says this is a significant milestone because it’s the last major platform to move from the old server stack used to power the popular catch-up service.

The new version offers the iPlayer exclusive, Radio 1 video channel and collections.

Over the last year the BBC has moved from eight versions of the iPlayer to one.

Live channel playback, which is now a feature of the TV version, will shortly be introduced to Microsoft Xbox One and Sony Playstation 4.

    Sky expands kids VOD

Sky has announced a major expansion in the amount of kids shows available on its connected TV platform.

Its planning to expand the number of available episodes from 700 to around 4,000.

The broadcaster claims its on demand service will offer more kids content than any other platform.

Luke Bradley-Jones, Sky’s Brand Director of TV Products, said: “I know from my own kids that they just want to watch their favourite TV characters including Ben and Dora whenever they can. And parents want the convenience of a quick and simple way to access lots of episodes all in one place. That’s why we’re massively expanding the variety and number of shows available on demand – and putting them front and centre of the Sky+ TV Guide. For our customers it means a huge library of kids shows, all there at the touch of a button.”

Availabilty of kids content is often seen as an attraction of the Netflix platform.

Sky’s increase in programming follows a number of new deals signed with rights holders including Viacom and Turner.

Canadian OTT reaches half the population

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 22 May 2015

Canadians love their OTT: Parks Associates research reveals that 58% of Canadian broadband households have at least one connected CE device allowing online content to be accessed through a TV set, a rise of 48% compared with 2012.

Nearly 40% of Canadian broadband households have a gaming console connected to the Internet, 25% have a connected smart TV, and 14% have a connected streaming media device.

According to the Emerging Power of IoT in Canada survey, more than 40% of these households connect a computer directly to a TV to access online content.

But as far as cord-cutting, only 4% of Canadian broadband households intend to cancel their broadband service completely. But, among people under 45 who use a VPN to access online video, nearly a quarter plan to cancel their cable or satellite TV service over the next 12 months.

Helping things along is the fact that the end of 2014 witnessed several new OTT services emerge in the Canadian market from Bell Canada, Rogers and Shaw.

"These services represent a potential deterrent to the growth of Netflix and other OTT services in Canada, as well as a new area of competition among Canadian pay-TV providers," said Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks Associates.

Interestingly, video downloads rank just below personal DVD/Blu-ray disk collections as a source of video in Canada, with 35% of broadband households watching downloaded video on a monthly basis.

Only about 12% of Canadian pay-TV households report having TV everywhere as part of their service, but a further 22% of Canadian broadband households express interest in receiving a free online movie service from their broadband service provider.

"Canadians are getting content for connected entertainment devices from a variety of sources. Nearly one-third of broadband households are downloading movies or TV shows at least once a month, and 8% are using VPN and proxy services to obtain content from foreign services," said John Barrett, director of consumer analytics at Parks Associates. "These sources are acting as alternatives to traditional cable and satellite TV services and putting competitive pressure on the market."
