Heiko Wuest appointed Primacom’s VP Business Products

Primacom, Germany’s fourth-largest cable operator, has appointed Heiko Wuest as VP Business Products with immediate effect.

In this newly created role, Wuest will head a new division specifically targeting customers in small and medium-sized businesses, offices, stores and practices (the SME market).

Wuest’s appointment marks Primacom’s entry into the SME market for the first time in the company’s history. Sales from this new business segment are expected to become a significant proportion of the group total over time. The new business products division is distinct from Primacom’s existing housing association business which continues to be run by Jean-Pascal Roux, VP Housing Industry.

Wuest (49) brings many years of industry experience and extensive business contacts to his new role at Primacom. Since 1998, Wuest has held various sales management roles at telecommunications companies, including a 12 year stint as Head of Department at Versatel.

“The launch of an offer to small and medium-sized businesses customers is the next logical step in our growth strategy as we seek to leverage the full potential of our high-performance broadband network,” said Joachim Grendel, CEO of Primacom. “Our entry into this substantial and demanding market demonstrates our confidence in the capabilities of our networks and services and we expect strong sales growth in this area over the coming years.”

Major change in Russian TV ad market

TV advertisers in Russia are increasingly reallocating their budgets from national to regional broadcasters.

As a result, reports Kommersant, national TV ad purchasing fell by 8% in the first quarter, while that in Moscow rose by 12% and in other cities by 13%.

Industry sources believe the trend, which was also seen during the crisis years of 2008/9, will be repeated in the second quarter.

By focusing their efforts on regional TV services, advertisers are able to both reduce costs and target audiences more effectively.

Significantly, the figures also show that the worse of the downturn in Russia’s TV ad market may now be over.

On a national level, advertising inventory fell by 21% in January and 3% in February, while in March it rose by 1%, year-on-year.

    ILS suffers Proton launch anomaly

Weeks of uncertainty are ahead for the ILS launch programme after an anomaly with Saturday’s launch of a Mexican government satellite.

The Proton Breeze M rocket lifted off at 11:47 local time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, carrying the Centenario satellite. According to Khrunichev and International Launch Services (ILS), preliminary flight information indicates that the anomaly occurred during the operation of the third stage, approximately 490 seconds after lift-off.

A Russian State Commission has begun the process of determining the reasons for the anomaly. Simultaneously, ILS will form its own Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB).

The anomaly puts on hold future missions including Inmarsat-5 F3 SC, which only arrived in Baikonur on May 1 and the Russian Express-AM8 spacecraft that had been slated for August.

In April, the launch of Centenario was postponed after an anomalous condition discovered on another spacecraft caused the flight worthiness of the Centenario satellite to be questioned.

Connected TVs to drive OTT surge

Subscriber numbers for OTT TV services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime are likely to increase globally from 92.1 million in 2014 to 332.2 million by 2019, according to the new data produced by Juniper Research.

While North America will remain the leading market in terms of subscriber numbers, it will be closely followed by the Far East.

In its report Mobile & Online TV & Video: OTT, IPTV and Connected Markets 2015-2019, Juniper Research says that consumers will favour connected TVs as their primary screen, especially when one considers the trend for watching long-form video on OTT subscription services.

Furthermore, the long lifecycle of TV’s, previously ‘dumb’ TVs will see an upsurge in becoming ‘connected’ due to the cost-effectiveness of devices such as Chromecast, and Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, as well as the high uptake of games consoles and STBs which provide preloaded services.

This is in contrast to smart TVs, which currently offer poor operating systems and user interfaces.

Other key findings are that ad spend on VOD will grow almost fourfold by 2019, by when the market will be dominated by China and the Far East.

IPTV numbers are meanwhile forecast to grow by over 70% between 2014 and 2019.

Watch4 rolls out SVOD service in German-speaking Europe

Video-on-demand (VOD) provider Watch4 has launched a subscription-VOD service in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The offering contains around 500 hours of TV series which internet users can access for a flat monthly fee of €5.90. In Switzerland, the price tag is CHF6.90. The offering can be tested free of charge for 4 weeks.

The lineup comprises, for example, crime series from German public broadcaster ARD such as Schimanski, Hauptstadtrevier, Im Angesicht des Verbrechens and Hubert & Staller.

“Besides the free AVOD service, we are now the first platform to additionally offer SVOD,” said Philipp Rotermund, CEO of Watch4. “The double strategy is pursued in the USA by Hulu, the second-strongest VOD provider in the United States.”

The company based in Luzern, Switzerland, is backed by media entrepreneurs Philipp Rotermund, Jochen Kröhne and Helge Sasse. The service which records up to 8 million video views per month focuses on productions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The free-to-air channel ran into financial difficulties due to high distribution and staff costs and low advertising revenues.
