Turkmenistan plans first satellite launch in March

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 13 February 2015

Turkmenistan will launch its first satellite in March 2015 to accelerate the development of broadcasting and telecommunications services in the country, according to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The satellite, called TurkemenAlem (Turkmen Universe) and built by France's Thales Alenia Space, was originally scheduled for launch by US company SpaceX in November 2014.

Although SpaceX has not revealed its long-term target launch dates, the Turkmenistan Government joins Japan's SKY Perfect JSAT Corp, SES and Israel's Spacecom as customers to have satellites due for launch on Falcon 9 rockets this year.

Turkmenistan's communications satellite will have a 15-year lifespan and will reportedly be operated by a control centre in Akhal Province, with a back-up control centre in Dashoguz Province.

Bezeq to gain control of YES

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 13 February 2015

Israeli telecommunications firm Bezeq is to take full control of satellite TV operator YES in a long anticipated deal worth up to ILS1.05 billion (US$271 million).

Through the acquisition of the controlling 50.2% stake in YES, Bezeq will be able to package TV, phone and Internet services and compete with its biggest rival, cable operator HOT, which already offers triple-play services.

"This is a strategic transaction for Bezeq that will turn it into the complete communications group," said Stella Handler, CEO, Bezeq.

Bezeq will buy the remaining stake from Eurocom, a company controlled by Shaul and Yosef Elovitch. Eurocom also holds shares in Bezeq. Bezeq will pay ILS680 million in cash for the shares and ILS1.54 billion in loans provided by Eurocom to the satellite operator YES.

Eurocom will be entitled to two additional contingent payments. The first, for up to ILS200 million, will be based on tax synergies and the second, for up to ILS170 million, will be based on YES's business results over the next three years.

Israel's antitrust commissioner gave its permission for Bezeq to merge with YES in 2014, however the deal must receive approval from the Communications Ministry and minority shareholders.

The Communications Ministry is in the process of creating a wholesale telecoms market that will allow other companies to use Yes and Hot's infrastructure. In approving the Bezeq/YES merger last year, the antitrust commission said Bezeq would first have to pave the way for other firms to compete in the market for television broadcast services.

Egyptian court frees Al Jazeera journalists on bail

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 13 February 2015

An Egyptian court has granted bail to the jailed Al Jazeera journalists Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy, who are being re-tried on charges of aiding the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

"Bail is a small step in the right direction, and allows Baher and Mohamed to spend time with their families after 411 days apart," an Al Jazeera spokesman said on Thursday.

"The focus though is still on the court reaching the correct verdict at the next hearing by dismissing this absurd case and releasing both these fine journalists unconditionally."

A third Al Jazeera journalist, Peter Greste, who was also to be r-tried, was deported to his native Australia on 1 February after spending 400 days in prison.

"I'm overjoyed that my colleagues and "brothers-in-bars" are at last able to go home to their families. The decision from the court in today's hearing is a small but significant step that not only allows them to enjoy being at home as I have over the past week; it shows that they are not considered as terrorists," said Peter Greste.

"The judges would not have let them walk out of prison if they felt the pair posed a threat to public security," he added.
Fahmy, Mohamed and Greste were imprisoned in June 2014, but their convictions for spreading false news to help a terrorist group were overturned on appeal in January pending a retrial.

The next hearing in their re-trial is set for 23 February.

Streaming steaming on in Nordic countries

    DetailsJoseph O'Halloran | 13 February 2015

Traditional linear TV is constantly losing ground to online video on-demand (VOD) services according to the latest Arkena Nordic Video Index report.

nordic streamingThe report is based on a survey conducted with over 4,000 people from the Nordic countries which over the last few years have seen the hugely disruptive effect of the arrival of the likes of Netflix and HBO Nordic. Indeed the data shows that cord-cutting is continuing, with one in ten Nordic households stating that they will terminate their cable or satellite subscription in favour of online TV services within the coming year.

A growing number of Nordic households are using VOD services as a complement to their linear TV selection, and they're willing to pay for it. The average household spends €19 a month on premium VOD subscriptions. The report also reveals that the computer is still by far the most used screen when it comes to watching streamed video content. With just under half (45%) of respondents using computers, followed by tablets (25%) and smartphones (13%). The percentage of people that predominantly use the computer has gone down, compared with last year's report.

"The possibility to watch whatever you want, whenever you want and on what screen you want are the biggest attractions of the online TV services," commented Arkena commercial lead and marketing manager Jesper Arenhill.

"In that context, linear television seems stiff and uninviting, especially to a younger generation. It's simply not part of their video consumption behaviour and that mindset is beginning to spread. The process is driven on by the streaming companies' large investments in high quality TV series."

Analysts see Cuba as definitive cord-nevers market

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 13 February 2015

Netflix's move to enter the Cuban market earlier this week surprised many in the industry, as the country is far from having ideal conditions for the rapid growth of a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) online platform. Now, an analyst note points to a possible long-term strategy in a market in which traditional pay-TV might never arrive.

From 9 February, Netflix has been available for Cubans who have access to the Internet and can pay with an international credit card. But what initially seemed to be just another expansion through Latin America has been delved into deeper by some analysts.

A note published by the Argentinean firm Carrier y Asociados states that over 25% of Cubans have access to the Internet, but only 5,000 connections are broadband and most of these are not in private homes. In addition, one hour's connection to the Internet costs $4.50 and a Netflix subscription is $7.99, this on an island where the average salary is $20 per month and international credit cards are rare.

So, "where's the beef?" asks the firm. For Carrier y Asociados, Netflix is preparing for coming developments on the island and a highly possible technological leapfrog which is to jump over the cable TV industry and develop pay-TV directly through the Internet. According to the researchers, Cuba will never be a market of cord-cutters because it will immediately become a cord-nevers market.

RTVE.es rockets through multiscreen, smart TV accesses

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 13 February 2015

RTVE.es, the online platform of Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, has seen record growth in January, reaching over 21 million unique users and experiencing a big rise in smart TV and connected screen connections.

rtveAccording to figures from the OJD report published by RTVE, video and content consumption on the platform has grown by 27% since January 2014, adding over 4.5 million unique users in 12 months. This growth was especially strong during the last quarter of 2014 and January 2015, when the site's traffic increased by 14.8%.

Mobile users are partially responsible for these figures, as they currently represent nearly half of the website's traffic. According to the report, 45.6% of users were watching the Web via smartphones or tablets.

Smart TVs have also driven part of the growth, with 735,000 users consuming online video through the Botón Rojo app - a hybrid TV app including video-on-demand (VOD) and live streaming - and almost 400,000 users checked the site via other smart TV apps. Botón Rojo's traffic was also powered by radio on-demand content, a recently added feature, which has seen 390,000 unique users in just two months.

Other mobile apps have also seen growth and last January reached 2.6 million unique users.

FremantleMedia takes quarter stake in Corona TV

    DetailsEditor | 13 February 2015

Continuing its recent spate of strategic investments, FremantleMedia is taking a 25% stake in Corona TV, the newly-created TV production company from filmmaker Richard Johns and Rupert Jermyn.

FremantleAiming to bolster its ambition to build its scripted pipeline with projects that will have an epic and cinematic feel and attract international co-production funding, FremantleMedia will now have a first look option on all Corona TV output. Corona TV is a sister company of Corona Pictures, and develops, produces and markets feature films and television programmes globally, including the major established markets and emerging markets such as China. FremantleMedia already has a relationship with Johns and Jermyn, having previously worked on the development of Birds of Prey, a TV adaption of the first three novels of Wilbur Smith's Courtney series.

"We've looked at [Corona TV's] production slate and they have some exciting ideas which are ripe for international co-production funding," commented Sarah Doole FremantleMedia director of global drama, explaining the reasons for the deal. "Having them as part of the FremantleMedia family gives us some brilliant projects for our scripted pipeline, while our existing infrastructure will help bring their epic ideas to fruition. I can't wait to get started."

Added Richard Johns and Rupert Jermyn in a joint statement: "We're absolutely delighted to have made this deal with the dynamic team at FremantleMedia. As film-makers we have always created big stories for the world rather than one particular market. This move gives Corona Television the strategic financing, distribution and marketing firepower most drama producers can only dream of, allowing us to tell stories for TV on a truly global scale."

Cuevana asks users for $1 to keep OTT service running

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 13 February 2015

Argentina-based over-the-top (OTT) platform Cuevana, which links to pirated streaming content and gives free access to movies and series, has started a campaign asking for $1 donations in order to keep the service running.

Having gone through several closures and re-launches in recent months, Cuevana seems to be having difficulties keeping the platform active, mostly due to the increasing traffic which is no longer supported by the platform's servers. Indeed, Cuevana, together with Popcorn Time, is the most used illegal streaming platform in Latin America.

Through its social profiles on Twitter and Facebook, the site's creators have been asking for help in order to keep the service running under its current conditions - through Storm and without advertising or any kind of profit.

"We reached a point where user traffic makes it unbearable to finance Cuevana servers with our own money," explained the site owners on the social networks.

The donations, which can be done via PayPal or with Bitcoins, reached 120 during the first hours of the campaign, but no more updates have been posted since then.
