ISE 2015: Haivision unveils cost-effective live video transport solution

With business efficiency the name of the game in live video transport, Haivision has unveiled at ISE what it claims is a cheaper and more effective alternative to satellite or MPLS networks.

The Haivision Media Gateway is marketed under the tagline of 'more content, less cost' and is designed to allow broadcasters to aggregate and replicate live, HD streams concurrently to and from remote locations, over any network and most importantly securely. Users can convert streams to and from SRT — Haivision's secure reliable transport technology — and standard MPEG Transport Stream (TS), TS for video distribution within a LAN and transport over WAN.

It aggregates streams from multiple facilities to one central location for live backhaul and broadcast monitoring and replicates a live stream from a central location and distributes it to multiple facilities over public and private networks. Broadcasters can harvest live video content from multiple remote production venues, aggregating SRT streams and re-distributing the streams as TS within a central production venue.

"Today's world is driven by collaboration, communication, and in broadcast, the quest for more content at less cost," said Peter Maag, Haivision's CMO. "The Haivision Media Gateway brings together remote audiences and video operations with all of the quality of dedicated circuits at a fraction of the cost."

Amino reveals first customer for TimeShift pause live TV solution

An unnamed 'major operator' in the Netherlands has become the first company to deploy the Amino TimeShift pause live TV (PLTV) solution.

TimeShift buffers video for up to one hour and has been specifically developed to enable middleware providers to offer 'pause on demand' or 'instant rewind' functionality, depending on operator requirements. It is also built for write intensive applications - such as instant rewind - where reliability and extended lifetime are critical, enabling IPTV operators to offer PLTV without the need for a hard disk drive-enabled set-top box (STB). Amino regards it as particularly relevant for high latency networks where network-based PLTV would be problematic.

The solution combines 8GB of flash storage from SanDisk with Amino's Aminet IPTV software. Available in a small USB flash drive interface, the PLTV solution can be deployed as a plug and play upgrade with the flash drive slotting into the USB slot on the STB enabling consumers to instantly pause, rewind and resume live TV.

The operator will offer the solution to its customer base throughout the Netherlands, where the company provides IPTV services across fibre and copper networks. The local PLTV recording solution has been optimised to deliver what Amino claims will be a 'highly responsive and seamless' consumer experience irrespective of network type.

"We are constantly looking for ways to increase the performance and practicality of our set-top boxes," commented Amino's CEO Donald McGarva. "The new Amino TimeShift offers a smart, local storage solution that enables operators to deliver the same quality to time-shifted viewing that was once only possible with live TV watching," added Oded Sagee, senior director and general manager of connected and computing solutions at SanDisk.

IPTV sales register US$1BN in South Korea

Television and Internet-bundled products now account for 43% of the globe's most connected country's pay-TV market, according to the latest figures from Korea Communications Commission.

South Korea's three major IPTV providers have gained significant ground on multi-system operators (MSOs), with the latter seeing their market share drop from 63.5% in 2012 to 58% in 2013.

Sales in the IPTV market grew from KRW842.9 billion (US$760.77 million) in 2012 to KRW1.1251 trillion ($1 billion) in 2013, representing an increase of 35.5%.

Video-on-demand (VOD) sales also grew 45% to KRW433.1 billion ($391 million) over the same period.

SKB grew its digital subscriber base by 1.8% and LG Uplus grew 2.3%, each making its presence felt on KT, whose market share decreased from 44% to 41.4% between 2012 and 2013 – said Korea Communications Commission.

Although system operators topped the list of subscribers in 72 districts – with CJ prominent in 20 districts, t-broad in 16, and C&M in 15 – their overall growth remained flat. KT affiliates, however, grew their market share from 25.8% to 27.2% by taking over five new districts.

Total broadcasting revenues stood at KRW14.347 trillion ($13 billion) at the end of 2013, up 6.3% from 2012, with revenues from programme providers registering KRW6.756 trillion ($6 billion).

The broadcasting advertising market shrank 2.7% to KRW3.2421 trillion ($3 billion) in the same period, with South Korea's three main terrestrial broadcasters' ad share falling from 65.0% in 2013 by 1.4% year-on-year.

The deal – subject to regulatory approval – marks the largest acquisition by the 21st Century Fox-owned company in India since it completed the buyout of Asianet in 2014.
