Millicom revs rocket as it expands across LATAM

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 03 February 2015

In a year full of expansive moves throughout Latin America - launching direct-to-home (DTH), cable and mobile operations in several countries - Millicom saw a strong increase in revenues during 2014, driven in large part by the company's merger with UNE-EPM.

Presenting unaudited figures, Sweden's Millicom has declared $1,860 million in revenue, half of which comes from South American business in countries including Paraguay, Bolivia and Colombia - where the UNE merge has generated $316 million in revenue. In Central America, where Millicom has a consolidated position in the mobile and pay-TV markets, the telco reached $643 million in revenue.

The figures represent a 63.3% growth in the South American region during the last year and a 4% growth in Central America, driving general revenue figures to show 27.1% growth worldwide.

The Swedish company has been increasing its focus on Latin markets during 2014, targeting mobile customers with a wide portfolio of over-the-top (OTT) services through the Tigo brand, and strengthening cable and satellite TV operations across the region.

These positive figures have much to do with UNE-EPM, the Colombian telco which merged with Millicom in August 2014. The company's operations grew by 7% during 2014 and its subscriber base reached 1.8 million of connected homes with pay-TV and broadband services, out of a network delivering fibre access to over three million houses.

Cable operations in Paraguay (up 36%, a lot of which growth followed the launch of Tigo Sports) and Bolivia (56% growth), in addition to a more consolidated presence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, have also been highlighted by the telco.

"Our drive into cable continued to gain momentum in Q4, while the popularity of our satellite services (DTH), maintained its momentum and we expect more to come," said Tim Pennington, interim CEO at Millicom. "We now pass over 5.6 million households with our cable network and we have over 2.6 million households connected. Close to 40% of our cable customers are enjoying the digital lifestyle with digital TV."

Satellite dominates as MENA pay-TV figures rise to 21.3MN by 2020

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 03 February 2015

Middle East and North African (MENA) pay-TV homes will double in number this decade to 21.3 million by 2020, according to a report from Digital TV Research.

Turkey will account for 37% of the regional pay-TV penetration by 2020, when 24% of all MENA households are forecast to subscribe legitimately to pay-TV services, up from 18% at the end of 2014.

The Gulf state of Qatar will record 72% pay-TV penetration by the time it hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2020, with Israel's pay-TV providers reaching 71% of the population. However, regional disparities mean less than 10% of TV households in Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia will receive pay-TV services.

"Pay satellite TV has grown due mainly to the expansion of OSN and beIN Sports. We estimate that OSN had 1,162,000 residential satellite subscribers [excluding non-residential satellite subscribers and subscribers to non-satellite platforms] at end-2014, with beIN Sports providing a further 819,000," said Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research.

"Piracy remains a major problem, despite many efforts to eradicate it. There are 34.3 million free-to-air satellite TV homes in the Middle East and North Africa sub-regions [excluding Israel, Turkey and Eurasia]. We estimate that at least 10% of these homes also receive pirated premium satellite TV signals. This represents considerable revenue loss to the legitimate players."

Satellite TV revenues, which account for some two-thirds of all pay-TV revenues in the region, will hit US$3.76 billion in 2020. Some $1,572 million of this will come from Turkey, with Saudi Arabia leapfrogging Israel into second place in 2015 and accounting for $674 million by the end of the decade.

Satellite delivered pay-TV will achieve 11.8% penetration – or 10.32 million – in 2020, up from 6.9% of TV homes ten years earlier. Of these, Turkey will account for 5.32 million and Saudi Arabia 1.24 million. By 2020, 37% of Qatar's TV homes will receive subscription-based satellite services. However, 10 less affluent countries will struggle to support 5% penetration, according to researchers.

Although satellite will continue to dominate the pay-TV sector in MENA, legitimate IPTV subscriptions will triple between 2014 to 2020 to 6.16 million, and IPTV revenues will grow tenfold to $1,071 million between 2010 and 2020. As with satellite services, Turkey will provide the largest single number of subscribers (1,631,000) in 2020, although Qatar will lead the region in terms of penetration figures, reaching 35% at the end of this decade.

Alarab News suspended within hours of launch

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 03 February 2015

Alarab, the Arabic news channel owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Al Waleed bin Talal, has been suspended just hours after its launch on 1 February 2015.

The 24-hour satellite channel, which is based in the Bahraini capital Manama, was suspended on Sunday after airing an interview with a local opposition activist Khalil al-Marzooq, a prominent critic of Bahrain's ruling Sunni royal family. The channel had promised to offer impartial news across the Middle East from the outset.

While Alarab News Channel said it had stopped broadcasting temporarily for "technical and administrative reasons", Bahrain's Information Ministry confirmed the satellite TV station had been suspended. The pro-Government newspaper Akhbar al-Khaleej reported that the suspension was due to the channel "not adhering to the norms prevalent in Gulf countries".

Jamal Khashoggi, general manager of Alarab, said at launch: "We felt there was a real need for an independent and impartial channel. We are proud that our programmes will go beyond the 'normal' to provide viewers with the stories that matter to them."

Al Arab TV was set-up in Bahrain because Saudi Arabia does not allow independent media to operate in the kingdom.

Bahrain's Information Ministry said it is working with Al Arab's management to resolve the matter

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 03 February 2015

Genius Brands International (GBI) is partnering with FatRedCouch on the production of apps for GBI's animated children's series, Thomas Edison's Secret Lab.

GBI and FatRedCouch will introduce a master app for show to coincide with the premiere of the animated series on US public television stations later this year. The master app will feature a self-contained play environment offering multiple activities and games, utilising animation footage from the series. The app will be available on iOS and Android platforms initially through various channel partners, including Apple, Google, Amazon and Barnes & Noble (for Nook).

"Kids today expect a dynamic, interactive way to 'play' their favourite shows on a variety of devices," said GBI's president of global consumer products, Stone Newman. "The Thomas Edison's Secret Lab master app will take viewers deeper into the Secret Lab, showing kids how fun science can be by immersing them in a digital world where they can interact with the characters and be a part of this secret world themselves. FatRedCouch is the perfect partner to help us extend this experience into other formats."

Thomas Edison's Secret Lab follows Angie, a 12-year-old prodigy, and her young science club who accidentally discover a dream lab equipped with gizmos and gadgets, including two of Edison's very last inventions: a hologram that brings Edison himself to life, and a virtual reality machine that lets them go anywhere. There is even a wacky (and slightly nervous) robot called Von Bolt that Edison left behind, who becomes part of every adventure.
