ARD takes Tour de France back to German TV

German public broadcaster ARD has confirmed that it will recommence live coverage of the Tour de France this year following a 3-year break.

ARD’s main channel Das Erste will follow the race daily between 16.05 and 17.25 CET from July 4 to July 26, 2015.

Following several doping incidents, ARD and fellow public broadcaster ZDF dropped their live coverage of the Tour de France in 2012.

ARD has now decided to push ahead, but in a cautious way: The broadcaster has acquired the rights for only one two years, paying less than €5 million, reports German news magazine Der Spiegel with reference to ARD circles.

For the rights between 2009 and 2011, ARD and ZDF apparently paid around €20 million. Both decreasing ratings and the doping incidents have pushed the prices down.

According to the report, the rights contract contains a doping clause, like it is now the case in most sports rights deals, allowing the channel an immediate pull-out in the case of new occurrences.

Like in previous years, commercial sports channel Eurosport will also show the Tour de France live on German TV screens.

    Lithuania slaps down Russian channel

The Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission (LRTK) have decided to ban some of the programmes carried by the Russian channel Ren TV Baltic for a period of three months.

According to the regulator, the move follows an analysis by independent experts and the Inspector of Journalist Ethics that found some programmes on the channel reported in a biased way about developments in Ukraine, “inciting war and hatred for Ukrainians and the legitimate government of Ukraine, Ukrainian sovereignty and integrity of the support of the EU and NATO countries”.

The decision will come into effect after it has been authorised by the Vilnius Regional Court.

As previously reported in Broadband TV News, Edmund Vaitiekunas, the head of the LRTK, said earlier this week that two other Russian channels – RTR Planeta and NTV Mir Lithuania ¬– could be banned for up to a year.

CES 2015: Quantum dot LCD TV market 'exploding'

    DetailsJoseph O'Halloran | 09 January 2015

The growing demand for 4K/UltraHD and other high quality applications is set to see shipments of quantum dot-based LCD TVs ramp up over the next three years says analyst DisplaySearch.

quantum dot shipmentsIn its Quarterly TV Design and Features Report DisplaySearch calculates such shipments will grow from 1.3 million in 2015, after their first year of availability, to 18.7 million in 2018. Driving growth will the emergence of Ultra HD services throughout 2016 which will need TV sets commensurate with the services.

DisplaySearch regards quantum dot as part of the LCD industry's response to the challenge posed by OLED technology. "While LCD technology undisputedly dominates the TV scene, manufacturers continue to innovate, in order to bring additional value to consumers," said, Paul Gray, director of European research at DisplaySearch. "The launch of new 4K/Ultra HD services promises to foment another round of innovation, as content creators bring richer, deeper colours to their art." Curved screens, another popular feature in 2105 are though considered as offering limited opportunity for growth, as the market for this feature is predicted to peak at 8.2 million in 2016.

Samsung confirms first annual profit fall for three years

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 09 January 2015

Samsung Electronics has reported its first annual profit decline since 2011, though improvement in the fourth quarter hints at increasing stability of sales.

The South Korean consumer electronics giant lost market share for the three quarters up to July-September, with analysts suggesting smartphone competition from Apple's iPhone 6 and China's Xiaomi would have continued this trend to December.

Samsung said its fourth-quarter operating profit is likely to be KRW5.2 trillion ($4.74 billion), with full results to be announced later this month.

The company's 2014 operating profit is expected to be about KRW24.9 trillion ($22.6 billion), down 32% from 2013, based on preliminary figures. It marks a rebound from the third-quarter's KRW4.1 trillion profit which was the firm's lowest quarterly result in more than three years.

Analysts suggest a robust demand for components such as memory chips and improvements in the mobile business through new mid-to-low tier smartphones will improve Samsung's outlook in 2015.

This week Samsung unveiled its UltraHD TV technology and the formation of an alliance to establish premium quality standards. With the announcement, the company said it is strengthening its commitment to high quality Ultra HD content and devices.
