CES 2015: Cisco draws Charter template for video proposition

    DetailsJoseph O'Halloran | 08 January 2015

The day after it announced it would be the backbone for Kabel Deutschland's next-gen video services, Cisco has entered into a similar strategic agreement with Charter Communications.

Under the terms of the deal Cisco will provide the leading US cableco with two main security software products from its Videoscape portfolio: the VideoGuard Server, which provides the downloadable conditional access system (DCAS) functionality on set-top boxes; and VideoGuard DRM, which provides Digital Rights Management functionality on a range of client devices. Cisco will supply what it says will be a 'substantial' share of Charter's next-generation Worldbox video offering and will continue to supply CableCARD boxes until Charter migrates all current and acquired systems to the downloadable security solution.

Charter plans to deploy downloadable security to its current systems this year and will then continue deployment to acquired systems. The downloadable security solution has been a multi-year effort involving multiple cable vendors. The downloadable security solution is an open solution, which has been ported to multiple vendors' CPE. It interoperates with in-place proprietary conditional access system implementations, facilitating efficient footprint wide rollout across different cable video network architectures.

"Cisco shares Charter's vision of the future of network architecture, where our network's intelligence is located in the cloud rather than in devices at the edge," remarked Charter president and CEO Tom Rutledge. "We are excited that Cisco will be a key supplier of the Charter Worldbox, and that its Downloadable security solution and digital rights management solutions will be part of Charter's next-generation, cloud-based video solution."

DStv extends EPG services from EBS

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 08 January 2015

Sub-Saharan African pay-TV provider MultiChoice DStv is adding some electronic programme guide (EPG) services from EBS to its Portuguese and Dutch digital satellite channels.

The deal will result in improved viewer information, scheduling and series links for the pan-African Portuguese channels: DStv Kids; DStv1; DStv Pipoca; Cinemundo; Trace Toca; TIM; CMTV; So Novelas; and TLN; as well as the Dutch channel BVN, which broadcasts in South Africa.

EBS will collect data for each satellite channel, which is received in a variety of formats. The data is then added to EBS' scheduling application Pawa, checked to ensure all required information is present, and edited to DStv's requirements.

"We have an excellent relationship with DStv and we're delighted to announce this latest expansion to our contract. With so many channels fighting for audience share the way that the content is written and presented is vital. The additional technical functionality that enables services such as record and series link means that the EPG has become a vital tool for both platforms and channels worldwide," said Keith Bedford, managing director, EBS.

    DetailsJuan Fernandez Gonzalez | 08 January 2015

LTE connections tripled in Colombia during the last quarter of 2014, passing the 800,000-subs barrier and taking the country into a new era of high speed mobile services.

Colombians' quick adoption of 4G technology is enabling operators to deliver better TV everywhere, multiscreen and mobile video services.

According to figures from the Ministry for Information and Communication Technology, 4G connections grew by 275% during Q4 2014, reinforcing the LTE boom experienced during the first nine months of the year.

"Colombians are demanding more high speed services and we are on the right path, although we're not hitting all socio-economic levels within our society," said Diego Molano, ICT Minister.

Indeed, 4G market is predicted to reach five million subs by the end of 2016, according to a report by Alcatel-Lucent.

Looking at other mobile data technologies, 3G users account for 3.8 million subs, making this technology the most used in the country, followed already by 4G and 2G, which still account for 540,000 subs.

Colombia - which has been investing heavily to extend telecom services among the population during the last two years - has almost reached ten million broadband subs, up 342% since January 2014 and representing a penetration of 20.4%.

CES 2015: ATEME takes LiveSphere to living room

    DetailsJoseph O'Halloran | 08 January 2015

Video processing technology provider ATEME, with partners Kolor and Finwe, has taken the immersive experience of the LiveSphere end-to-end live video broadcast solution to the living room.

The solution captures, stitches, streams and displays video to provide an interactive consumer experience for tablets, smartphones and virtual-reality headsets. In its latest iteration it can now allow viewers to dynamically change fields of view using a remote control.

The LiveSphere client application runs on an STB reference design based on the STMicroelectronics Cannes chipset that is capable of decoding Ultra HD video.

The dynamic selection of the field of view relies on a remote by 4MOD Technology, a leading provider of innovative wireless user interface solutions. The selected field of view is output over HDMI to any HD or Ultra HD TV set.

"LiveSphere is a real innovation in the way we watch television, providing the end user with the possibility to navigate inside live events using a remote control," said Ismail Allalcha, manager of strategic & ecosystem marketing, Digital Consumer Group, STMicroelectronics. "This demonstration confirms the maturity and performance of ... Cannes and Monaco chipset families, which can reach resolutions of up to Ultra HDp60: a definite advantage for 360° video applications."
