    RCS&RDS inks CME deal

RCS&RDS is to take over all the radio stations owned by Central European Media Enterprises (CME) in Romania.

Citing company sources, Mediafax reports that the two parties have reached an agreement to this effect and will submit documents to the National Audiovisual Council (CNA).

However, the regulator will have no say on the acquisition.

CME, which through Pro TV and its proprietary thematic channels and SVOD service Voyo is one of the leading broadcasters in Romania, currently owns the radio stations Pro FM, Info Pro, Pro Classic FM Music and Dance FM.

RCS&RDS, which has been trying to enter the radio market since 2013, is meanwhile the leading cable and DTH operator in Romania.

Goldbach Group sells Swiss OTT service Wilmaa

Swiss advertising sales company Goldbach Group has sold its 67% stake in internet TV platform Wilmaa to Thomas Gabathuler.

The founder and managing director of Wilmaa who previously held 33% of the shares will thereby become the sole shareholder. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Goldbach wants to focus on its core competencies as a sales house and in the agency business, according to a statement. The move would also enable to company to act in the market as a neutral advertising aggregator.

WilmaaGabathuler now intends to push on the further expansion of the internet TV platform and its offerings. As part of a long-term cooperation, Goldbach will continue handle advertising sales for Wilmaa.

Goldbach entered the platform as a 50% shareholder in January 2009. Like its local rival Zattoo, Wilmaa offers live-streams of TV channels as a free-of-charge, advertising-financed OTT service.

In contrast to Zattoo, Wilmaa is not available outside Switzerland.

Dubai outlet to launch YouTube channel

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 22 December 2014

A new online channel Dubai ON Demand will launch on YouTube in 2015, populated with lifestyle-based video clips presented by local celebrities.

A division of Ti22 films, the channel aims to provide home grown shows, filling a gap left by state television network Dubai One's decision to end local production.

Wyplay, SIGFOX collaborate on pay-TV operations

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 23 December 2014

Pay-TV software solutions firm Wyplay, and SIGFOX, a provider of energy-efficient IoT connectivity, have revealed a joint technology collaboration to streamline broadcast operations.

The system integrates SIGFOX's IoT cellular connectivity solution with Wyplay's open-source pay-TV set-top-box (STB) middleware. This will allow TV operators to connect their broadcast decoders to their backend systems without a direct Internet connection.

In one use case, essential customer-care diagnostics information can be retrieved from STBs over SIGFOX's network and cloud platform by the TV operator's call-centre staff. With this data, the operator can quickly identify the root cause of a customer complaint, such as a dead battery in the remote control or a disconnected satellite cable—information that can significantly shorten phone calls between call centres and customers, thus improving the subscriber's satisfaction and reducing operating costs.

The SIGFOX global IoT network, which is operating in several European countries and will begin deployment in the US in the beginning of 2015, is designed exclusively for two-way, small-message device communication. It is claimed to be able to eliminate the cost and energy-use barriers to wide adoption of the IoT and greatly extends the battery and service life of connected devices.

Drivers and APIs for SIGFOX-capable dongles and integrated chips will be pre-integrated in Wyplay's Frog client open-source convergent TV middleware as part of the SIGFOX Ready program, in which SIGFOX certifies partner hardware.

"This partnership clearly illustrates the kind of win-win efficiencies that the Internet of Things can deliver via SIGFOX's network and the innovative thinking that typifies the Frog by Wyplay alliance," said Stuart Lodge, executive vice president global sales at SIGFOX. "Helping TV operators improve customer service, while lowering operating costs is a powerful example for other industries and service providers."

NBN Co to trial HFC cable TV in Australia

    DetailsRebecca Hawkes | 22 December 2014

Australia's government-owned National Broadband Network (NBN) Co is to launch a customer pilot on its newly acquired cable TV network, with commercial services expected early in 2016.

The news follows the recent deals to gain cable infrastructure from Telstra and Optus, and is part of the country's drive to install a multi-technology National Broadband Network, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Telstra is to sell its copper and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) network to NBN Co, which will also acquire Optus's HFC network – in a re-run of the deals reached with Australia's previous government. Telstra will also provide planning and design services for the project over the next four years.

"The recently revised definitive agreements between Telstra and NBN Co allows for the incorporation of existing networks in parts of the country where it represents the fastest and most cost effective way to deliver the NBN," said John Simon, chief customer officer, NBN Co.

NBN Co is aiming to connect 1.9 million homes by the middle of 2016, thanks in part to a plan to install fibre-to-the-basement (FTTB) to 20 multi-dwelling units per month from March 2015. NBN Co will begin industry consultation on a fibre-on-demand product in January 2015.

Fox networks go dark on DISH

    DetailsMichelle Clancy | 22 December 2014

Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network have gone dark for DISH Network subscribers.

DISH decided to black out the channels when a new carriage contract couldn't be arrived at by the expiration date of midnight on Saturday.

"Fox News Channel did not disconnect Dish," said Tim Carry, executive vice president FCN and FBN. "Rather, DISH prematurely ceased distribution of Fox News in an attempt to intimidate and sway our negotiations."

He added, "It is unfortunate that the millions of Fox News viewers on Dish were used as pawns by their provider. Hopefully they will vote with their hard earned money and seek another one of our other valued distributors immediately."

DISH however said that it suggested a short-term extension to avoid a blackout as negotiations continued, a strategy that it has employed many times of late in negotiations with everyone from CBS to Turner to Comcast SportsNets. But, it said that Fox instead itself pulled the two networks and introduced other channels into negotiations—channels that are not included in the contract up for renewal.

"It's like we're about to close on a house and the realtor is trying to make us buy a new car as well," said Warren Schlichting, DISH senior vice president of programming. "Fox blacked out two of its news channels, using them as leverage to triple rates on sports and entertainment channels that are not in this contract."

Schlichting added: "DISH has had a productive relationship with Fox for many years. We regret the service disruption to our customers, and remain committed to reaching an agreement that promptly returns this content to Dish's programming lineup."

Over the weekend, DISH put to rest two more carriage dispute issues: with Comcast regional sports networks, and with Journal Broadcast.
