    De Rothschild closes Thomson deal

Winch Capital 3, run by Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, has bought a 49% stake in Thomson Video Networks.

The deal was first announced last Septmeber and is now closed.

Thomson Video Networks is a video compression systems company specialising in head-end networks offering compression and transcoding solutions. The group, headquartered at Cesson-Sévigné, has 16 sites throughout the world and employs more than 400 people. Sales amount to around USD $100 million, of which 90% is in exports.

Thomson Video Networks resulted from a spin-off from the Technicolor group in 2011, a deal led by the company’s executive management under Christophe Delahousse and with the assistance of the FCDE investment company. After the large-scale transformation of the newly independent company, Thomson Video Networks’ management wished to accelerate growth and bolster its leadership in its historic terrestrial and satellite TV markets while becoming an essential player in new segments like over the top (OTT) video and IPTV.

To accompany Thomson Video Networks on this ambitious growth plan, Winch Capital 3 was chosen to succeed FCDE after a competitive process organized by DC Advisory. Winch Capital 3 has been joined by CMC-CIC Private Debt and the company’s executive team has reinvested all its proceeds.

“This investment in Thomson Video Networks fully embodies our new Winch Capital 3 fund strategy: to invest in an international, midsized company with an executive team that has increased its equity stake to roll out an ambitious development project with identified external growth opportunities,” said Sylvain Charignon, partner, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners.

Christophe Delahousse, CEO of Thomson Video Networks, added: “We are delighted to have Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners on board. We are now fully equipped to accelerate growth and deploy our new ‘Behind Every Screen’ strategic approach, combining on-premises and cloud-based resources to help operators preserve video quality and control cost of ownership for broadcast and multi-screen services. Thomson Video Networks will be able to capitalize on its enlarged and innovative product and solutions portfolio, its global sales network, and the financial strength and expertise of Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners for external growth projects.”

    Serbian pay-TV market grows

Although Serbia’s telecom market is not as developed as many others in the CEE region, the number of pay-TV users grew by 7.6% to 1,552,000 at the end of 2013.

At the same time, according to BMI and Balkans.com, pay-TV penetration in 2013 grew from 19.92% to 21.62%.

One of the key developments in Serbia this year was the ratification of an amendment to the telecoms law in July.

It places great emphasis on network neutrality and has been welcomed by Telenor Serbia.

Furthermore, it is likely to result in the auction of a number of frequencies, thereby leading to the launch of 4G services.

    Tricolor TV ownership discussion resumes

The Russian press has restarted a debate about the ownership of Tricolor TV, the country’s leading DTH platform.

According to Kommersant and Comnews, Andrey Tkachenko, the president of the GS Group, has been named as the chairman of the board of director of the National Satellite Company (NSK), the operator of Tricolor TV.

However, this was and continues to be denied by GS Group.

Meanwhile, NSK maintain the platform is owned by physical persons and VTB Capital.

Tricolor TV is Russia’s leading provider of pay-TV services, with a market share of around 29%.

Telenet invites its customers to Play

Belgian cable operator Telenet is bundling its various catch-up TV, on-demand and TV Everywhere services under a single brand and app, Telenet Play.

“Telenet is the only operator in Belgium to bundle the content of local broadcasters, an extensive collection of international movies and series, and the best TV functionalities, such as Terugkijk TV (Lookback TV or catchup TV), in one smart and simple product,” the company claims. Play costs €10 a month, and is available from Monday, December 15.

“In combination with a digital TV subscription, Play offers customers a total solution for their television time. They can enjoy unlimited access to linear TV, Terugkijk TV, recordings
and an extensive selection of movies and series on the device of their choice.”

“Television is a rapidly evolving market, where new options are tapped all the time. Delayed viewing, marathon viewing, watching on multiple screens: these are all trends that enable the consumer to decide for himself what he wants to watch, as well as where and when, ” said Inge Smidts, Senior VP Residential Marketing.

“Customer surveys have revealed, however, that there was no single product available on the market that bundled all these options and combined them with a solid offer of local and international content. With Play, we now bring all of this together for the consumer on a single platform: this is unique in Belgium, simple, and it provides access to the best entertainment the Flemish media sector has in store.”

The catch-up functionality is available for 25 channels, including the major Flemish broadcasters (Een, Canvas, VTM, 2BE, VIER, VIJF), several French-speaking channels (La Une, La Deux, AB3), and channels such as Njam, Studio100 TV and Libelle.

In addition, Play offers an extensive collection of international and Flemish movies and series, including full seasons, from which the whole family can make an unlimited choice.
The customer also receives 20 additional thematic channels. Telenet also offers Play More, which covers all the functionalities of Play, topped with additional thematic channels and a larger and more recent catalogue of movies and series. Play more costs €24.95 a month.

    Romanian pay-TV penetration nears 90%

Romania ended the first half of this year with 6.6 million subscribers to pay-TV services, a 5.4% increase on the same period in 2013, according to data published by the regulator ANCOM.

As a result, the penetration of pay-TV services was 89%, a figure Broadband TV News believes to be one of the highest in Central and Eastern Europe.

Cable remains the most popular method of watching pay-TV services in Romania, with the number of homes at the end of June being 4.21 million, up almost 6% on a year. It was followed by DTH (2.37 million, +4%) and IPTV (65,000, +42%).

Most subscribers were in urban areas (61%, with almost 80% of these being cable).

In rural areas, DTH accounted for 62.3% of all pay-TV subscribers.

Most pay-TV subscribers (over 4 million, up 9% year-on-year) opted for digital services, with the breakdown of digital reception being 59% DTH, 39% cable and 2% IPTV.

Although the number of cable homes receiving digital services increased by 16% in the year to June 30, they still accounted for less than half (1.6 million) of the cable total.

BBC Three to be pathfinder of future online services

The BBC has given details of how BBC Three will be moved from a regular broadcast channel to an online proposition with links to the major social networks.

Director-General Tony Hall said he wanted the online BBC Three to be a pathfinder of future services.

“The BBC has always embraced changed even when it’s been really difficult. I remember the rows when we launched BBC news online and now it’s an essential service. The challenge we have is to maintain the strength of our core channels.”

The move has been brought about by the combination of the licence fee being held at current levels and the taking on of additional responsibilities such as World Service and S4C.

“By searching out new ways to engage and entertain young audiences in their terms, the new BBC Three will be a great example of how we can reinvent public service for the digital world – using their talent, appearing on the platforms and devices that they use, and taking them as equals and partners,” Lord Hall said.

In proposals submitted to the BBC Trust the online BBC Three would replace the current linear version in Autumn 2015. It would have a dedicated website with long form programming and a curated daily schedule from where viewers could jump to other shows from earlier in the day’s schedule.

There would also be links to short form content that would appear through sites including YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

Examples of the kind of shot form programming include micro video, animations and photo galleries that would be linked to the long form shows.

All the long form content would eventually be repeated on either BBC One and BBC Two. 80% of the overall BBC Three content budget – reduced from £50 million to £30 million per year – would be spent on long form content.

Two editorial pillars would form the back bone of the new output. “Make me Think” and “Make me Laugh”. Feature and formatted shows would be significantly reduced.

At the same time children’s programmes on CBBC will be extended by two hours and a new BBC One +1 channel will launch. The BBC says these moves will help mitigate any short term loss in 16 to 34 audiences.

    Tablets favoured for watching video

55% of tablet users in the US report leveraging a video feature of their device, according to the NPD Group.

This includes video calling; taking, posting, and uploading videos; as well as watching video from a streaming service or app from a TV channel or pay TV provider. Video feature usage is even more prominent among younger consumers. Two-thirds (67%) of tablet users aged 18-34 use these video features compared to 53% of 35-54 year olds, and 45% of users age 55 and older. Further, watching video from a streaming service or TV channel app is the most common video focused behavior.

Through tablets, consumers have access to nearly every top TV and streaming video app and this is contributing to utilizing tablets as a TV. According to the new Connected Intelligence TV & Video App Availability Report, 66 of the 70 TV and streaming video apps evaluated are available on tablets. iPads have the most (66), followed by Android tablets (60), Kindle Fire (43) and Windows tablets (32).

“Consumers are demonstrating their willingness to spend time using tablets for a broad set of video features, including their vast library of TV and streaming video apps,” noted John Buffone, executive director, Connected Intelligence.

“This provides an opportunity for mobile carriers to promote features such as on-the-go video calling, TV viewing and ability to socialize videos as a reason to attach a tablet to their data plan. Promoting these popular activities could help perpetuate the significant growth in tablet data plan connections already experienced this year.”

The research also shows that tablet ownership among US consumers is on the rise, and growing at a faster rate than that of any other connected device. According to The NPD Group’s Connected Intelligence, Connected Home Report, as of the third quarter of 2014 (Q3 2014) there were 109 million tablets in use, up 35 million from last year.

“Now that the tablet market is unmistakably past the early adopter stage we are able to gain visibility into what the user base is still doing with their devices, and in this case it’s often video focused activities,” said Buffone.
