World Cup viewing grows in the US

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 17 June 2014

The World Cup is slowly winning the hearts and minds of the one nation that has historically failed to embrace the beautiful game: according to a Washington Post-ABC poll, 28% of Americans said that they plan to watch World Cup games this summer.

This bodes well for viewing statistics: in the United States, 94.5 million people (about 31% of the population) watched at least 20 consecutive minutes of the last World Cup, an increase of 19% over the 2006 World Cup in Germany, according to the Pew Research Centre.

That said, in the Post survey, more Americans called soccer as a sport "a big bore" (28%) than said that it's "exciting" (19%).

In a Pew Research survey conducted in January, 22% of Americans said they were "especially looking forward to" the World Cup, nearly the same share as when asked about the 2010 World Cup in January of that year (23%). But no other event mentioned in the 2014 survey found fewer people anticipating the event.

That same study also revealed a few interesting global findings. For instance world will be watching Brazil – both for this summer's World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics – but Brazilians are sceptical about whether the world will see Brazil in a positive light. About a third (35%) of Brazilians said the World Cup will help their country's international image, while roughly four out of ten (39%) said it will hurt Brazil's image, according to a survey conducted in April.

World Cup viewing is expected to surpass previous records, according to Pew Research.

"Of all the numbers associated with the event – 32 teams, 64 matches, 736 players, each team's odds of winning – some of the biggest (with the exception of the World Cup's reported $11.5 billion price tag) are the numbers of people who will be watching," the group said.

About 3.2 billion people around the world (roughly 46% of the global population) watched at least a minute of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa on TV in their homes, according to a report produced for FIFA by the British firm KantarSport. Nearly one billion people (909.6 million) tuned in for at least a minute of the 2010 World Cup final, in which Spain defeated the Netherlands, a similar viewership number to the London Olympics' opening ceremonies.

AT&T expands U-verse in the South
    Michelle Clancy | 17 June 2014

AT&T is continuing its capital investment push, expanding its U-verse fibre-to-the-home footprint, with a launch in Montgomery, Alabama. The buildout will support IPTV, broadband and voice at speeds that will eventually reach 100Mbps.

The new services are part of AT&T's Project Velocity IP (VIP) capex investment to expand its IP and mobile data networks — Montgomery is just a step to a bigger rollout, the carrier said. Project VIP will extend the AT&T U-verse IP network to about 57 million customer locations in its service areas by the end of 2015.

"By focusing on building a strong economy with great infrastructure, we have created an environment where businesses want to invest in our city," said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. "This announcement will provide Montgomery residents with another choice among technology providers."

U-verse IPTV includes TV everywhere apps for mobile devices and online viewing; the ability to manage DVR recordings remotely; the ability to choose and watch four channels at once with My Multiview; social networking integration; and video-on-demand (VOD).

"The great thing about U-verse is that it makes TV, Internet and voice services work together in harmony," said Rich Guidotti, AT&T Gulf States vice president and general manager. "We're honoured to bring our innovative services to Montgomery area customers. Local residents have asked for more TV service choices and today we're delivering."

SES and EBU partner for Ultra HD World Cup

SES has confirmed the EBU is transmitting the 2014 FIFA World Cup to audiences throughout North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia in Ultra HD and HD over its SES satellites.

Eurovision, the EBU’s distribution arm is using the NSS-806 satellite and SES’s teleport in Manassas. SES’s NSS-7 and SES-6 spacecraft are being used to enable Eurovision to deliver matches from the 12 World Cup venues throughout Brazil to the International Broadcast Center in Rio de Janeiro.

“Eurovision and the EBU are gearing up for one of the largest broadcast operations requirements in the history of the World Cup, now including Ultra HD content. The live coverage of some matches in Ultra HD will allow consumers to catch a glimpse of the future of TV,” said Paolo Pusterla, Eurovision’s Head of Procurement.

“Consumers today expect higher and better image quality when watching TV. We are proud to be able to continue working with Eurovision to fulfill the ever-changing demands of broadcasters with confidence, by providing hybrid solutions to deliver coverage of this spectacular sporting event to over 3 billion people around the world,” said Samantha McCloskey, Vice President of Global Occasional Use Services at SES.

Earlier this month, BBC R&D and Arqiva announced a series of Ultra HD trials during the World Cup. The closed user trials will cover three games from the Maracanã stadium in Rio – a last 16 match, a quarter final and the final.

CTH goes OTT with Irdeto, Inview

    Editor | 17 June 2014

Leading Thai cable service provider CTH Public Company Limited has tapped Irdeto and Inview technology to develop an over-the-top (OTT) and hybrid version of its core service.

The pay-TV firm currently offers its customers more than 140 channels, 30 HDTV, including premium content such as Barclays English Premier League (EPL) football. Yet it has a mission to provide its customers with services beyond its existing cable networks.

CTH will use Inview's software platform to provide either a pure OTT or a hybrid broadcast and OTT offering in one seamless user interface. Its Liberator middleware supports a next-generation user experience supporting a range of OTT services, allowing CTH to be able to promote content and generate new revenue streams from advertising and other services. Such revenues wil be protected by Irdeto multiscreen media protection solutions.

"CTH is prospering and we expect continued growth as we expand and evolve our offerings," explained CTO Akradej Supamahitorn. "We needed strong, experienced OTT partners to help us provide the most compelling pay-TV services to our customers. We found what we were looking for in Irdeto and Inview, who have been trusted partners for quite some time now and provide us with a seamless user experience and dynamic, studio-grade content protection. We have complete confidence that 2014 will be a successful year for CTH."

OTT media server sales soar as STB revenues dip

    Editor | 17 June 2014

Q1 2014 was a tough first quarter for CE sales according to a survey from research firm Infonetics Research.

In its Set-Top Boxes and Pay TV Subscribers report — tracking IP video, cable, satellite, and digital terrestrial (DTT) set-top boxes (STBs) and over-the-top (OTT) media servers — the analyst calculated that the global STB revenue totalled $4.8 billion in Q1 2014, a 3% decline compared with the previous quarter. Yet encouragingly, STBs in the tough cable sector actually saw a rise in both unit and revenue growth in 1Q14, each up 5%. Further good news came in the over OTT media server segment which Infonetics calculates will grow from 6% of global STB revenue in 1Q14 to 14% by 2018.

In terms of key players and regions, Arris took advantage of the HDTV cable STB refresh cycle underway at North American cable operators and finished 1Q14 as the STB market share leader for the third consecutive quarter in a market that commanded the largest portion of STB revenue. That said, Asia Pacific is projected to close to within three percentage points by 2018, driven by a penetration of advanced services such as HDTV and OTT, which will set in motion an upgrade cycle.

The report also found that IPTV providers are planning significant uptake of set-top boxes with 802.11ac in 2015 with emerging markets driving growth in a pay-TV market where operators are looking to deploy second screen' apps.

"There was a pocket of strength in the set-top box market in the seasonally weak first quarter. North American cable operators stepped up spending again on top of successive sequential revenue increases as they transitioned higher-end multi-play subscribers to headed and headless video gateways and replaced aging, power-hungry standard definition boxes with more efficient high definition boxes," commented Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research. "A boost in overall STB unit shipments this year will come from an increase in over-the-top media servers as service providers in China and other emerging markets use these devices to deliver live streaming TV."

High Court rules YouView infringing trademark
    Joseph O'Halloran | 17 June 2014

In yet another setback for the UK subscription-free, video-on-demand service, the YouView brand has been found to be infringing a trademark owned by telecoms firm, Total Ltd.

Total first took legal action against YouView TV in November 2012 and in a 40-page judgment, Mr Justice Sales concluded that YouView's set-top boxes and TV service infringed Total's YourView trademark. YouView had tried to argue that the trade mark was invalid and that there was no infringement, but the judge disagreed and dismissed YouView's arguments.

Following the High Court ruling, Total intends to apply for an injunction against the use of the YouView mark by the TV consortium — founded by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva — which, thanks mainly to the two ISPs has only just begun to gain traction in the highly competitive UK television market. Total will now be seeking to prevent any further use of the YouView name along with financial payment and legal costs.

"As a growing business, Total has always taken the protection of its intellectual property rights very seriously. I am delighted that our determination — and considerable investment — in doing so has resulted in the courts finding in our favour once again," commented Total managing director Lorrin White. "Whilst Total may not compare to YouView in terms of size, we both operate in the same industry space. We protect our rights to brand ownership and wholeheartedly defend those rights — as any business should — otherwise we would never have registered our marks in the first place. Our integrated YourView products are core to the long-term strategy of Total. We are a business that respects our partners, competitors and the wider industry, but YouView has persisted in its infringement of our registered mark, leaving us no option but to take action through the courts."

World Cup joy for beIN Sports

France’s beIN Sports has seen a surge in interest following the start of the World Cup, with subscription sales more than tripling.

According to Le Figaro, beIN Sports is the only broadcaster to be showing all 64 matches from the competition, 36 of them exclusively, and has created a craze among football fans not satisfied with TF1’s offer.

The explosion of beIN Sports subscription sales has been confirmed by all distributors, and though things may stabilise in the coming days demand is likely to be maintained through matches it is showing exclusively.

beIN Sports had 1.7 million subscribers prior to the start of the World Cup last week.

A number of operators, including Numéricâble, Orange, Free and SFR, are currently running promotions on the service.

    More regional DTT for Poland

The Polish Office of Electronic Communication (UKE) has awarded a regional DTT licence multiplex to Telewizja Luzyce.

Valid until the end of 2020, it covers the area Luban Slaski, Jelenia Gora, Boleslawiec and Chojnow in the Lower Silesia part of the country.

Telewizja Luzyce, which has until now operated an analogue TV service, was the only bidder for the licence.

Local reports say that although the licence is for the L1 multiplex, L1 will in fact be the third multiplex operating in the area.

L3 is operated by NTL Radomsko, part of the TVN group, and L2 by TVT. Both have been up and running since late last year.

Telekom adds ProSiebenSat.1 VOD to Entertain

Germany’s national telco Deutsche Telekom has taken the video-on-demand (VOD) services operated by commercial TV group ProSiebenSat.1 on board its IPTV platform Entertain.

Customers can now directly access the catch-up TV services from Sat.1, ProSieben, kabel eins, sixx, Sat.1 Gold and ProSieben Maxx as well as online video library maxdome.

The six catch-up TV services offer more than 1,000 pieces of content available free of charge, for example missed TV programmes in full length. In total, Entertain now provides content from around 40 channels in its catch-up TV section, for example from ZDF, Sport1, Syfy, TNT Serie and Disney Junior.

At maxdome which has been integrated as an app into the Medienwelt (media world) section, Entertain customers can sign up for the subscription VOD package which grants access to more than 50,000 titles for a monthly flat fee of €7.99.

The possibility to order single titles from maxdome is, however, not made available to Entertain customers. This is still only provided by competitor Videoload operated by Telekom. Entertain customers can rent movies, series and documentaries at Videoload for 48 hours. A download-to-own function will be added shortly.
