    June 4, 2014 10.52 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Inside SecureInside Secure, a French provider of embedded security solutions for mobile and connected devices, has licensed its DRM Fusion Agent software to Sky Deutschland.

The German pay-TV broadcaster will use the solution to protect premium video content delivery for its OTT subscription video-on-demand (VOD) service Snap.

The DRM Fusion Agent software is embedded in Sky Deutschland’s Snap apps for Android and iOS-based devices. It provides the studio-approved digital rights management (DRM) required to protect Snap’s VOD library which includes movies, TV series, HBO productions, children’s programmes and Disney content.

Snap LogoSnap which launched in December 2013 is available to both Sky Deutschland subscribers and non-subscribers on the internet, iPad, iPhone, selected Samsung Galaxy devices and connected TV sets.

“Our collaboration with Sky Deutschland is increasing testament to our market leadership in downloadable DRM for securely distributing high value content,” said Simon Blake Wilson, executive vice president of the mobile security division at Inside Secure. “With leading customers like Sky, the BBC, HBO, Amazon and others as well as with all the major Hollywood studios, we are increasingly establishing our DRM Fusion Agent as the de facto DRM solution that also offers the best user experience on multi-screens.”

    June 4, 2014 17.31 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

TiVo is proving increasingly popular with Ono’s customers, with 407,000 already opting for the service as of late May.

This, according to the Spanish cable operator, was equivalent to over half of its pay-TV subscriber base.

Commenting on the service, Patricia Ferruz, the head of residential at Ono, said: “we have reached a record TiVo users who daily and exclusively enjoy the most advanced television service, thanks to a single fibre-optic network in Spain, which allows us to bring our customers the most innovative and differentiated services in the market. TiVo is changing the way people consume television in homes and still has enormous potential ahead. We are sure that it will consolidate its position as the leader in pay-TV in our country.”

    TVN inks Sony deal

    June 4, 2014 20.08 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Player.plThe Polish broadcaster TVN and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have reached an agreement on the launch of Player.pl on Play Station3 and 4 (PS3 and 4).

The VOD service made its debut on PS3 on June 4 and its launch date on PS4 will be announced shortly.

PlayStation users will now have access to new functionalities of Player.pl, including login option, quick access and convenience in managing their favourites, as well as ‘continue viewing’ function to pause and resume watching the video. Player.pl will also provide a full range of video advertising solutions – preroll, midroll and postroll.

The Player.pl app will allow PlayStation users to stream the most popular TVN-produced content to their platforms.

Commenting on the agreement, Maciej Maciejowski, member of the management board in charge of new business development in TVN said: “Connected devices are becoming increasingly significant for television, therefore premiere launch of Player.pl on PS4 and its re-launch on PS3 are extremely important for development of our VOD services. Player.pl is being introduced to further platforms so as to be literally everywhere within reach of our fans. Given the access to Player.pl via PlayStation, they will benefit from even more convenient and unconstrained opportunity to stream highest-quality videos on the big screen.”

Adobe: TV everywhere adoption on fire

    Michelle Clancy | 05 June 2014

TV everywhere initiatives are growing like gangbusters, with a 246% gain year-over-year. US use has increased 31% in the last six months, and now one-fifth (21%) of US households are using the apps.

According to the Adobe Digital Index, TV everywhere usage is growing faster even than third-party over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services such as YouTube, Hulu and Netflix.

iOS TV everywhere apps continue to dominate the market with a 43% share, though growth has slowed to 4% this year. iOS is followed by Internet browsers, Android apps and gaming consoles in terms of dominance. Gaming consoles and other non-traditional devices, grew an impressive 539% year-over-year in the first quarter.

Gaming consoles and OTT devices are also the fastest-growing devices for online video in general, with a 123% year-over-year increase (Jan 2013 vs. Jan 2014). Smartphone online video starts grew 48% year-over-year and 6% quarter-over-quarter, while tablets grew 16% year-over-year and 8% quarter-over-quarter.

802.11ac adoption in IP STBs set to skyrocket

    Michelle Clancy | 05 June 2014

802.11n dual-mode and 2x2 MIMO are currently the most widely-used Wi-Fi technologies on IP set-top boxes (STBs), though 802.11ac will show the biggest gains going forward, research has revealed. In fact, the standard is expected to grow from installations on 6% of boxes today to a whopping 67% next year.

"For set-top box (STB) vendors, the challenge is finding the right balance between adding new technologies and features while reducing costs to meet service providers' demands and remain competitive," said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research. "To do so, vendors need to build standard solutions instead of custom ones for each service provider," advises

Remote programming via tablet or mobile device heads the list of IP STB applications, rated highly by 67% of respondents, up 6 percentage points from last year's survey. Operator respondents also rated TR-069 for remote device/service-level management, and hard drive for integrated DVR support as the top IP STB features.

"Adapting IP STB offerings for targeted markets is another factor," added Heynen. "In China and India, low-cost IP STBs with fewer features, lower functionality, and more localised content are enough to meet customers' needs, but in North America and Western Europe, there's a growing appetite for more advanced STBs, like video gateways, which require a higher bill-of-materials cost and the addition of more advanced features."

Infonetics said that the top three IP STB suppliers currently installed by respondents are Arris/Motorola, Cisco and Amino Networks.

AirTies chooses Farncombe for IPTV device testing

    Michelle Clancy | 05 June 2014

Media technology services provider Farncombe is providing version 4 of its OpenTest automated consumer device testing to AirTies Wireless Networks, the over-the-top (OTT) STB and wireless gateway vendor.

AirTies will be able to run a swath of automated tests on its hybrid IPTV set-top boxes.

OpenTest features full AV recording and faster infrared control. With an extended external SOAP interface, OpenTest can now run scripts that have been written for other automated platforms.

"Automated testing will be at the heart of our test strategy moving forwards," said Ismail Arslan, quality assurance manager at AirTies. "Since Farncombe introduced a number of innovative new features, we feel that OpenTest offers market leading functionality and good value for money. With this latest version and a strong partnership with Farncombe, we are now using OpenTest to almost completely eliminate expensive and inaccurate manual testing, which helps us maintain our competitive edge in the STB marketplace."

OpenTest version 4 also allows customers to record the AV from test devices and keep this with the record of results. Using the GStreamer open source multimedia framework, this facility allows remote users to view the captured AV and results. In addition, faster control of infrared signals is resulting in higher throughput testing, which is helpful when customers test multiple devices simultaneously.

"Although automated testing has been increasing in popularity, a number of CPE vendors, like AirTies, have still continued with some manual testing," explained Philip Clayson, head of operational advisory and test at Farncombe. "But several OpenTest enhancements now significantly reduce the need for manual involvement in testing, particularly the AV Jukebox module for automated control of the AV input and the use of serial and Ethernet communications to debug logging capture while devices are being tested."

Cisco powers next-gen IPTV network for NOS

    Michelle Clancy | 05 June 2014

Faced with escalating online video traffic, Portuguese service provider NOS has turned to Cisco to combine its video and broadband services over a single DOCSIS access infrastructure.

Cisco's Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) and the Cisco Evolved Services Platform (ESP) are supporting the migration, with ESP providing software orchestration that manages the capacity migration from video into DOCSIS on the Cisco CCAP platform. The result is that NOS will be able to move capacity between video and broadband services as needed to support traffic spikes.

About 94% of NOS Iris subscribers are actively using additional cloud video services, necessitating the move, it said.

"We have seen consistent growth in our IP-delivered video services since the launch of our Iris platform, which has in turn increased pressure on our broadband access network," said Miguel Veiga Martins, CTO at NOS. "By converging the two, we are ensuring that we can invest the right capacity in the right places at the right time. Cisco's CCAP solution has proven to provide us with the operational efficiency that we need to ensure that we can continue to offer innovative experiences to our subscribers."

With support for multiple video security formats, the solution will also help enable NOS to deliver video-on-demand (VOD) content with security over IP, in line with DVB standards across the Cisco CCAP platform. The deployment also includes the Cisco Universal Broadband Router uBR10K, 3G60, RF Gateway 10 and DS384 line cards.

"NOS is a pioneer and innovator in the cable industry and has greatly demonstrated the benefits of service innovation to customer retention and maintaining or growing revenue in challenging markets," said Yves Padrines, vice president of service provider video for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia at Cisco. "This deployment is testament to the success of NOS existing services and will provide them even greater flexibility to innovate in the future."
