    Tax shock for Hungarian TV

    June 4, 2014 05.05 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

BudapestHungary’s two leading broadcasters RTL Klub and TV2 have expressed their shock at government plans to introduce a new advertising tax.

According to Portfolio, a new bill was submitted to parliament on Monday, June 2 by the ruling party Fidesz in what was the first economic policy of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s new cabinet.

It would see revenues, rather than profits, taxed from money generated from advertising.

The tax would be payable by media service providers whether they operate as a single entity or as associated companies, with rates varying between 0% and 40%, and come into effect on August 20.

TV2 believes that if approved the new advertising tax would have “unforeseeable consequences” for media businesses, especially for the television segment.

The broadcaster, which is 100% Hungarian owned, estimates that it would lose HUF1.6-1.8 billion (€5.3-5.9 million) in revenues each year.

RTL Klub meanwhile says the advertising tax is a brutal attempt by the government to incapacitate the largest medium of the country which “proved its independence of the parties and hence the government in the past 17 years.”

It adds that it would have to pay about 50% of the tax, which itself would have little positive impact on the state budget.

The proposed new law has also been criticised by the Hungarian Advertising Association (HAA), which said it would have a detrimental effect on the TV industry.

    Russian DTT costs spiral

    June 4, 2014 05.28 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Russian broadcasters are facing the prospect of paying increased fees for the use of the country’s second DTT multiplex.

Kommersant reports that that the amount per channel for this year (R500 million – €10.5 million) could grow to R1 billion in 2015, when the multiplex is fully up and running.

The prepayments required by RTRS, starting at around R38 million per month from this July, negate to some degree the savings made by broadcasters in switching from analogue to digital.

Unlike the second multiplex, the channels carried by the first multiplex are not required to pay a fee.

PwC: Subscription TV undaunted by OTT

    June 4, 2014 09.44 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Girl with tablet (PwC)Subscription TV revenues will continue to grow in the face of growing competition from OTT services, says PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook 2014-2018.

The blue chip analysts also predict that internet TV advertising will double in the next five years.

Global subscription TV revenues (excluding licence fees) will grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.5% over the next five years to $236bn in 2018.

PwC says the growth demonstrates that subscription TV is in a healthy position, assisted by the initiatives it has implemented to counter the impact of OTT and other disruptive influences.

It’s the traditional broadcasters that will gain the most from the rise in internet TV advertising, increasing revenues from $3.7bn in 2013 to $9.7bn in 2018, and more than double its share of total TV advertising from 2.2% in 2013 to 4.5% in 2018.

PwC says the broadcasters are adapting to the internet video opportunity, creating a significant new revenue stream against the competition of internet rivals.

Marcel Fenez, PwC’s Global leader, entertainment and media, said: “What all these markets have in common is a growing middle class boosting spending in entertainment and media. But the similarities stop there. Realising the revenue potential of these markets demands a deep understanding of the local context. The optimal approach for international players will most certainly be to collaborate with local partners.”

Total entertainment and media spending on digital services is forecast to grow at a 12.2% CAGR between 2013 and 2018 and account for 65% of global entertainment and media spending growth, excluding spending on Internet access.

Amazon locks the market: Is Netflix too late for Germany?

    June 4, 2014 10.05 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Veed AnalyticsThe German video-on-demand (VOD) industry is eagerly awaiting the launch of global market leader Netflix in Germany.

Veed Analytics, an analysis service by German consultancy Mücke, Sturm & Company specialising in the international video market, is sceptical about Netflix’s prospects for success.

“Our content analyses show that Amazon Prime offers the largest catalogue of current movies and TV shows in Germany. Assuming Netflix Germany launches a similar TV show offering to Netflix US, they would only rank fourth in Germany. This raises the question of whether Netflix enters the German market too late,” said Bernd Riefler, chief marketing officer at Veed Analytics.

Within a few months, Amazon Prime Instant Video has reached the top position among the German subscription-VOD services. A recent Veed Analytics analysis shows that Amazon offers 14% of the current 400 movies, the 100 most successful movies between 2010 and 2013 – significantly more than any other service. Of the current 100 TV shows measured by DVD sales numbers, Amazon also tops its competitors maxdome, Watchever and Sky Snap.

The content Netflix will offer when it launches in Germany by the end of 2014 is still unknown, but its positioning in the US at least gives a hint of the potential line-up. According to analysis by Veed Analytics, Netflix US is well positioned with regards to the US current 400 movies, but lacks current TV shows. Assuming a similar positioning in Germany, Netflix would only rank fourth in the TV shows category compared to Amazon, maxdome, Watchever and Sky Snap.

“Amazon already locked the market with a very low price point and offers an attractive content catalogue. Netflix has a superior product in terms of technology and user-friendliness, but ultimately the user decides based on price and content”, summed up Thies Haase, vice-president product at Veed Analytics.

Deutsche Telekom’s Videoload comes to Panasonic smart TVs

    June 4, 2014 10.11 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Videoload on PanasonicMassive Interactive has rolled out the Deutsche Telekom Videoload service across Panasonic 2014 smart TVs.

Using the Massivision Multi-screen Development Kit (MDK), Massive was able to deliver this application in under three months from start to finish.

Following on from the launch of Videoload on LG Smart TVs, Massive continued working with Deutsche Telekom to deliver the next phase of its device roadmap. The latest version of the app has the full functionality of the Videoload VOD, as well as the Erotic Lounge, built with parental controls.

Gert von Manteuffel, VP product management TV and video Deutsche Telekom, said: “The working relationship between ourselves, Massive Interactive and Panasonic has been virtually faultless and this, along with Massive’s technical expertise, has been key in enabling us to deliver Videoload for Panasonic Smart TVs in such a short period of time.”

Massive Interactive has built the new application for Panasonic smart TVs to work with both Smooth Stream and WMV content, as well as incorporating Play Ready encryption. An adherence to this standard will allow more devices to be rolled out, as Deutsche Telekom delivers its Roadmap for Videoload.

“Yet again this has demonstrated both the flexibility and technical excellence of our Massivision MDK. Delivering the Videoload app for all Panasonic Smart TVs to the standard that we have, is not only a credit to our team, but also our technology. We look forward to more successful roll outs for Deutsche Telecom in the future,” commented Kieran Bresnan, MD EMEA Massive Interactive.
