Media Broadcast plans German DVB-T2 platform

    June 3, 2014 10.17 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Media BroadcastGerman transmitter network operator Media Broadcast wants to build up a nationwide digital terrestrial TV platform using the new standard DVB-T2 which enables the distribution of more channels and HDTV on terrestrial frequencies.

Commercial broadcast group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland plans to transmit its HD channels on this platform. Public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have already expressed their support for a transition to DVB-T2 in autumn 2013.

For the DVB-T2 introduction planned for 2016 to materialise, Media Broadcast appeals to politicians and regulators to quickly create reliable framework conditions.

DVB-T2 new (October 2010)“DVB-T2 is ready for the market and Media Broadcast is ready for the transition to the new standard,” said Wolfgang Breuer, CEO of Media Broadcast. “Now it is up to the government, federal states and regulatory authorities to enable the move. This means specifically: Securing the 700 MHz frequency band at least until the transition to DVB-T2 is complete, long-term planning reliability for the remaining broadcasting spectrum and implementation of the legal media and telecommunications processes.”

“We trust that the German government will stand by its political promises regarding frequency issues as outlined in the coalition agreement and look forward to a speedy and continued constructive dialogue with the federal states and regulatory authorities,” added Breuer.

    June 3, 2014 11.10 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

NC+ SilverThe merger of the Polish DTH platforms n and Cyfra+ has effectively been concluded with the disappearance of the company Canal+ Cyfrowy.

Local reports say it has been incorporated into ITI Neovision and withdrawn from the National Court Register (KRS).

ITI Neovision and Canal+ Cyfrowy operated n and Cyfra+ up until March 2013, when the two platforms were merged into a new service called nc+.

Online overtakes print for sports fans

    June 3, 2014 11.17 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Sky Go iPadThe consumption of sports via mobile content is continuing to grow with print losing out to online.

Know The Fan – The Global Sports Media Consumption Report 2014’ from PERFORM, Kantar Media and SportBusiness Group says Online is second only to TV.

The most notable growth has been seen in Western Europe where, for example, mobile consumption of sport in Italy is now 50%, compared to 37% in 2013. Similarly, in Spain, mobile devices are used by 46% of fans to follow sport this year, which compares to 39% in 2013 and 20% in 2011.

The study also shows that approximately three-quarters of fans that use computers/laptops and three-quarters of fans that use mobile devices access content at least once a week.

Oliver Slipper, Joint-CEO, PERFORM, said: “We’re seeing the increased importance of connected devices, providing fans with greater flexibility and control. This provides a number of opportunities to all stakeholders in the digital sports media industry, from rights holders and sports associations to devices manufacturers, advertisers and betting companies, but it’s important that they respond to increasing demand for digital content.”

Newspapers are responding to the potential threat to their business. In the UK paid subscribers to online editions of The Times and The Sun offer their readers highlights of sports events such as Premier League football and Test Cricket.

German commercial channels to encrypt on DVB-T2

    June 3, 2014 14.20 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Sendeturm Köln Colonius (Media Broadcast)For the DVB-T2 platform to be rolled out from 2016, Germany’s commercial broadcasters aim for a uniform, mainly encrypted offering marketed nationwide while the public broadcasters will stay free-to-air.

This was reported by the media authorities following a meeting in Berlin at which the market players discussed their timing and frequency plans for the transition from DVB-T to DVB-T2. Thomas Fuchs, the media authorities’ coordinator for networks, technology and convergence, invited representatives from public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, commercial TV groups RTL and ProSiebenSat.1, the commercial broadcasters’ industry association VPRT and transmitter network operator Media Broadcast to this first round table session.

The participants agreed that digital terrestrial television (DTT) can only be sustained and further developed in the long run through a transition to DVB-T2. They decided that DVB-T2 will solely be deployed using compression system HEVC. It also emerged that all market players are now in favour of the DVB-T2 introduction.

According to the media authorities’ digitalisation report, 11% of the German TV households used DTT reception in 2013, corresponding with almost 4.2 million households. For 2.1 million households, DTT is the only TV reception method.

DVB-T2 new (October 2010)The gradual DVB-T2 deployment is scheduled to commence in mid-2016 and expected to be completed on a nationwide scale in 2020. At the end of the transition process, transmission capacity will be vacated which may then be handed over to mobile network operators. The participants called on the federal states to preserve the frequency spectrum required for the switchover period until 2020.

The media authorities want to coordinate and direct the further transition process. The focus will initially be on the detailed planning of the timeframe and the frequency issues followed by the communication to consumers and hardware manufacturers.

Smart homes offer fresh opportunity for pay-TV

    Michelle Clancy
    | 04 June 2014

Home security and home automation represent opportunity for pay-TV operators looking to grow in saturating market conditions.

In fact, according to a report from ABI Research, nearly 30% of North American households are expected to have a managed smart home automation system installed by 2019.

However, the firm noted that selecting technologies and overcoming standards fragmentation continues to represent a sizable investment for operators. Tighter integration between set-top boxes and broadband gateways will not occur until some of these issues are addressed, and the services enter the mainstream.

There are also regional variations; North American operators are focused on home security and automation that provide peace of mind, while European operators have focused more intently on energy management. In Asia-Pacific, the driving force has been more blended but, but centres on the smart home and making the user experience more efficient.

"Interoperability is a key challenge facing not only the service providers but any company working in the IoT [Internet of Things] space," said ABI practice director Sam Rosen. "iControl has done a remarkable job securing the most pay-TV service provider contracts in the North American market, but market-wide interoperability will come from open software frameworks and protocols. This will help devices and services communicate with each other instead of individual silos – truly making it the Internet of Everything."

A significant number of initiatives and alliances have formed to solve this problem but the market is still quite diverse. iControl's OpenHome Partner Programme helps third-party device manufacturers ensure interoperability with service provider IoT implementation, while the AllSeen Alliance (AllJoyn) has secured some early support from LG (connected TVs). Other platforms such as Imagination's FlowCloud, openHAB, Technicolor's Qeo (also working with AllSeen), Nagra's JoinIn and Prodea Systems' ROS are all taking various approaches to the same goal – making services, applications, and devices work together.

Senior analyst Michael Inouye added: "Roles for the wireless networking technologies are still evolving along with the guidelines around interoperability. Looking further into the future, the next evolutionary stage will come from the integration of services, applications, and technologies – this includes virtual assistants, indoor positioning and connected CE. The market still has a Wild West feel, but it's moving quickly and companies need to work together to ensure the market lives up to its potential."

Gannett to distribute interactive TV programming

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia
    | 04 June 2014

Gannett Broadcasting and Lionsgate-owned Debmar-Mercury have formed a partnership to develop, produce, test and distribute first-run, interactive broadcast series for a variety of day parts.

Debmar-Mercury, which produces sitcoms, talk and game shows, gains distribution for its programming from Gannett, which operates the largest independent TV station group of major network affiliates in the top-25 US television markets. Excluding owner-operators, Gannett Broadcasting is both the No 1 NBC and CBS affiliate group, with stations covering nearly a third of the country. Gannett will create and test first-run syndicated television programming under the partnership at many of its stations beginning in 2015.

Interactivity – the ability to engage the viewing audience with the show – will be a central concept of the programming developed by the partnership. In addition, Gannett will leverage the robust digital presence, including mobile, of its stations to reach viewers wherever they are.

"We're thrilled to be partnering with the talented team at Debmar-Mercury to produce the programming our viewers want," said Dave Lougee, president of Gannett Broadcasting. "We will work together to design shows to take advantage of how television has changed and create a new genre of syndicated programming. With more than 40 stations across the country, we will have the ability to experiment, test and refine programmes throughout the development process. Local broadcasters, like Gannett, have an opportunity to tap into the organic relationship between television viewing and social media."
