Management buy-out for Dutch ISP Scarlet

    June 2, 2014 10.55 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Stipte(Scarlet)The Dutch management has bought Scarlet Telecom, a Dutch triple play ISP, from Belgacom.

With its new owners, the company will now be known in the Netherlands as Stipte (Dutch for punctual) and will focus on being a full-service quality provider rather than profile itself as a price fighter.

Managing director and owner Matthijs Kamp said about the new premium service: “The quality and speed of the internet and home networks often leaves much to be desired, especially when the installation is performed improperly by the consumer. To avoid that we have introduced the VIP service, where a certified technician will install at the consumer’s home. He only departs when everything is working perfectly, modem, telephone and TV set.”

Stipte’s basic TV offer consists of 122 TV channels, of which 28 are in HD and 58 are available on tablet. The IPTV service is available across the Netherlands.

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 02 June 2014

Argentina's Turner Internacional has been nominated in 18 categories of the PromaxBDA Awards for Promotion, Marketing and Design Global. The festival awards the most creative campaigns worldwide.

The Turner Latin America division has been recognised for the work of its own agency InJaus for the networks Infinito, I.SAT, Space and Warner Channel.

"As in the last edition, Turner Argentina is the company with most nominations in the region," said Ariel Guntern, production and creative services VP at InJaus. "We try to overcome the stereotypes and impact the audience with our messages, and these awards indicate that we are going in the right direction."

Warner Channel, distributed in LATAM by HBO but whose programming, marketing and publicity are carried by Turner, has got ten nominations at the PromaxBDA Awards. Mixing social media and classic TV campaigns, InJaus received the nomination for the promotion of the series The Big Bang Theory, The Following and Believe, among others.

PromaxBDA was founded in 1997 as a result of the merger between Promax and the Broadcast Design Association (BDA) which aimed to promote marketing and publicity campaigns among the sector's professionals.

    Argentinean app improves DTT reception

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 02 June 2014

Argentina has a new free app, Antenas TDA, which aims to improve DTT reception in the country.

Designed by Nicolás Lichtmaier and recently promoted by the Government, the app helps to orient digital aerials to their nearest broadcasting point.

According to Argentina's news agency Telam, the app is only available for Android devices from Google Play and has already had 1,500 downloads. Although the app has been downloadable for free for nearly two months, it has become more widely known this week thanks to the Government's DTT agency promoting it.

Osvaldo Nemirovsci, coordinator for the Sistema Argentino de Televisión Digital - the country's DTT organisation - published a video on YouTube explaining how the app worked and recommending people to use it.

"It's a free application which can be downloaded by everybody and makes free-to-air digital TV more accessible for the audience," said Nemirovsci. The app improves aerials' orientation, one of the problems being experienced when it comes to getting a decent DTT signal reception.

volia-grafitiUkraine’s leading cable operator Volia has selected ADB to deliver OTT and hybrid OTT/cable boxes, software and integration services.

The deal, which is the first of its kind for ADB in Ukraine, will set the foundation for Volia’s further expansion into new on-demand and cloud-based services.

It will see the operator, which has nearly 2 million subscribers in a total of 34 cities, deploy two set-top box models – the ADB-1720CW for hybrid cable and IP/OTT and the ADB-1720W for IP/OTT HD environments.

    Turkish Show TV sale annulled

    June 3, 2014 08.11 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Turkish Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) has again seized control of Show TV.

According to Zaman, this follows the detection of irregularities by a court in the sale of the TV channel to Ciner Media Holding in 2013.

TMSF initially seized control of a number of assets belonging to Çukurova Holding last year in order to collect a debt of $455.3 million from the company.

Those assets included Show TV, which was sold in only 15 days, and without a tender, to Ciner Media Holding for $402 million.

However, the TMSF only received $97 million from the sale, with the remainder of the money being used to pay off the channel’s debt.

This led to criticism from the entrepreneur Erol Askoy, who holds a stake in the company, and he subsequently sued over the sale.

An investigation by the 4th Istanbul Administrative Court, which eventually ruled against the sale, prompted TMSF’s latest action.

Spain’s Telefónica has finalised the acquisition of all the shares in the pay-TV business Televisión Digital (DTS) owned by Prisa.

The deal will effectively see Telefónica increase its stake in the pay-TV business to 78%, with the remaining 22% still in the hands of the Spanish subsidiary of Italy’s Mediaset.
